Does anyone use Bear?

KarenP

I happened across a review for the software, Bear.
Aesthetically, it pleases me quite a lot! I'm considering using it in place of Apple Notes.
I’m wondering if anybody here has used it and what they think. How does it do for Notes? And is it at all good for something like researching to write a book?

Thanks,

I haven’t ever used it, but took a look at it today out of curiosity.

Do you like writing with Markdown to get anything except plain text, or do you prefer WYSIWYG? ?You should try out the free version to see whether you like using Markdown. ?Also, some commenters said, “The markdown syntax is absurdly anemic.” ?So again, check to see whether it does everything you desire in a note app.

The free version doesn’t offer all features. ?You must get a paid subscription to get full functionality. ?They say, "Bear Pro?offers advanced features including sync between all your devices, over a dozen beautiful themes,?and more powerful export options. All this, and future Pro features, can be unlocked with a single in-app?subscription that covers all your devices.” ?

It has family sharing with up to 6 family members, but in-app purchases are not shared.

OTOH, many commenters indicated that they enjoy the minimal interface.?

YMMV.

Thank you. I don’t like the idea of a subscription but I am happy to pay a one-time fee or even an annual subscription if inexpensive enough.
I don’t know what Markdown is or WYSIWYG (I know what that stands for, but are you saying it’s an actual app?).

The stuff I don’t like about Notes is the lack of formatting. It’s basic to the point of making it less functional. I also saw that Bear has Tags, which is great. I can’t imagine why they would make you pay for syncing, though. Doesn’t the Cloud take care of that?

WYSIWYG = What you see is what you get. ?This is what most folks use. ?You turn on bold and you immediately see your selection in bold, without any special formatting characters being displayed.

With Markdown you enter special characters in your writing indicating you want something to be bold. ?From what I’ve read, Bear only shows the final formatted document after you export it. ?For example, you would see the following in your note...
*this will be in bold* and /this will be in italics/
but you would not see the characters in bold or italics until after it has been exported. ?That is presuming that what I read was true. ?Bear has keyboard shortcuts available to make using Markdown simpler. ?

On their website ( ??),?they say that they have both monthly and yearly subscriptions.

Regarding hashtags in Apple Notes, you can always add them inside notes and then search based on those tags. ?But maybe I’m missing something on that because I don’t use them myself. ?From comments that I read, Bear’s only means of organization is those hashtags. ?It doesn’t have folders.

The following article says that Bear formats text as you type, but doesn’t explain what happens if you want to edit what you wrote. ?So, you may want to try it out to see how it works.
  • Hybrid Markdown editor.?You don’t have to imagine what your formatted Markdown will look like after you write because Bear formats text as you type. SUCH a helpful feature.

Thank you for the additional information. These are things I hadn’t even considered, so now I need to consider them. Maybe Bear allows a free trial. I’m a little concerned about the idea of no folders, though.

There is a free version that you could try. If what I understand is correct, the Pro version is a free version in-app purchase.

Howdy

I use Notes daily. It syncs/shares with other Macs/iPhones/iPads and with other computer users. .

It has bold, underline, italic, title, header, subtitle, body text, bullet and number and checklists.

I keep shopping lists, prescriptions, vaccinations and inoculations (like flu shots), household items and personal items I have to re-order, author and book lists. Computer info. Even lists of lightbulb types.

I attached a copy of my Notes item for a book series by James S. A. Corey now also a TV series

Thanks, Daniel. I also use Notes almost daily. But I have always been frustrated by its limiting formatting. My graphics design background cringes.
It is a very useful app and integrates with everything Mac and is free, so I do appreciate it. But when I saw the Bear interface, I got excited by the possibility of having all the functionality of Notes with a beautiful interface as well. I will have to look into the free version of Bear and see how it compares to Notes and then give feedback to the group of what I learned.

All of these notes-type apps are basically the same. Some offer slightly different organization than others.

Before you play for a subscription to Bear, check out:

Growly Notes (free)

NoteTaker ($25) (related to the defunct but much loved Circus Ponies)

Notebooks by Alfons Schmid ($36)

Notes is *very* flexible. Text, images, tables, just?add what you want. This is for 10.15 but I don't think it's changed much recently.

You can also password-protect notes.

One app you might consider is Drafts. It is free and extremely powerful plus has an option to dictate to Text. I find it extremely useful to create a first or other day of an email or a document or a list. The idea behind it is to allow to to create and then copy and paste into Word, Pages, an email, a list app etc.?
?
On an iPad with split screen it works great.?
?
The ductal function is amazing. Because the information for dictation likely goes over a server you have to modify what you say if your clients (in my case) are concerned with privilege or confidentiality. But then you just used a generic name and change it after the dictation is done and inserted.?

At different times I read rave reviews of DropBox, and got it, and of Evernote, and got it.

I never got entirely used to either of these, and eventually moved everything into Notes, and have been entirely happy with it since, and removed all trace of the other software.
