YouTube Premium to download videos
22
I¡¯ll be traveling quite a bit over the next 6-12 months. I watch a fair number of YouTube videos, and I¡¯ve just created a ¡°Premium¡± trial subscription, whose purpose for me is primarily to download videos from YouTube, LEGALLY. I¡¯ve discovered that requires using the Chrome, Edge, or Opera browsers. First question is that I don¡¯t know whether there IS an Edge browser for the Mac, or whether when the requirements say ¡°Chrome,¡± that truly means GOOGLE¡¯s browser, which I suspect IS the case (I¡¯ve not tried others). Even within Chrome, I¡¯m not really sure how it works. If I begin watching a video, the ¡°ellipsis¡± (more options here) control-click menu lists ¡°download,¡± but it¡¯s not clear to me what actually happens; i.e., is the video saved in a Mac file format as it¡¯s being played in real time, or does it download to a folder on the Mac? The latter seems NOT likely, because several minutes in to a 2 hour video being played in Chrome, there¡¯s no new file in my /Downloads folder. YouTube Premiums terms of use say that downloaded videos are automatically removed after 30 days. How can YouTube erase files that are ON my Mac? I¡¯ve just learned about Private Relay and turned it on. I think it only works in specifically chosen apps, perhaps only in Safari on the Mac. Chrome is not listed as an app in which it can be toggled to ¡°on,¡± nor are any other browsers listed (but Safari and Chrome are the only browsers currently on my Mac) I¡¯d be interested in other list members experiences with Private Relay, beyond those pertinent to YouTube file downloads. -- Jim Robertson

Missing Photo library
4
I have recently moved via Time Machine from an intel Mac to an M4. Today I attempted to open my photos app and got this message: Photos does not have permission to access the library "Photos Library_1.photoslibrary" Please grant access to the library by double-clicking it in Finder or selecting it in "Open Other...." There is no such file in the Photos folder - it is empty. Using Time Machine to look for such a file I find the latest is on February 20. How should I go about correcting this problem? If I restore, will I lose photos from iCloud that have been put there since February 20? Should I create a new library instead? If so, what effect would that have on iCloud Photos? Thanks in advance for any advice/assistance with this matter. - Jim

Over 2,800 Hacked Sites Target macOS Users with AMOS Malware A new campaign, called MacReaper, is targeting Apple users through over 2,800 compromised websites. The trick? Fake Google CAPTCHA prompts that urge users to open Terminal and paste a ¡°verification¡± command that installs the AMOS stealer malware. This malware can swipe Keychain passwords, browser logins, crypto wallets, and files from the Desktop and Documents folders. Even more dangerous: the attack infrastructure hides malicious instructions inside blockchain transactions using EtherHiding. Remember: Don¡¯t trust CAPTCHAs that ask for Terminal input. And if you¡¯re managing a macOS fleet, start monitoring clipboard activity and Terminal executions. Paul ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Helping Los Angeles area computer users since 1988

"Tracker blocking"
3
It¡¯s hard to say. But I have over half a dozen browsers installed on my machine so that I can keep track of which currently seems to be the best. While several of them block trackers, none of them are reporting such outlandish numbers. Frankly, while I believe that Apple is making a stab at security with Safari, I don¡¯t believe that they are as motivated in that regard as some third party browsers that hang their hat on security. I always keep coming back to the Brave browser. It¡¯s just a nicer Web browsing experience, and they seem to be all-in on security. Have a look at: https://cyberinsider.com/browser/secure/ Note that Brave is the top recommendation for security, and Safari doesn¡¯t even rate a recommendation. __________________________________________________ Randy B. iPhone pictures with apologies
3
I¡¯ve lost the address for the iPhone group, so I¡¯m posting this here hoping one of the photographers on the site can help me. After I copied and deleted hundreds of photos on my iPhone I swore I would keep the number down to the minimun I want to share. I have a number of pictures on my iPhone that I¡¯ve transferred to my MBP. Instead of a trash can icon, the bottom right corner of the screen has three bars. When I click on them I get a pop-up that says these photos are not editable and did I want to copy them and edit the copy. NO. I want to delete them. Any advice is appreciated. Frank Parth

How to access a Memory Stick Pro
12
I've just come across an old Sandisk Memory Stick Pro MagicGate - see photo IIRC it was for an old Sony video camera, long since defunct. I have no idea what, if anything, is on the memory stick and I'm looking for a way to read it. I looked for a suitable reader but failed miserably. I found readers for Memory Stick Pro *Duo* but not for the non-duo version. Does anyone have any suggestions, please, on how I might access the contents? Keith

Question about delivery of junk mail
4
I am curious. I just received several spam emails, that were addressed to (unique user name)@gmail.com and delivered into my Apple email account Junk folder. I have never had a gmail account. I do have an Apple email account that uses (unique user name) as an Alias. Why was it not rejected by the email server, before even getting to the filters, then deposited into the iCloud Junk folder? Ad blocker for Chromium
3
What's the best & cheapest ad blocker for Chromium? Where & how do I get the right version? I'm gradually switching from Brave to Chromium for sites that no longer work with Brave on High Sierra. (Unfortunately I've already discovered a couple of sites don't work in Chromium either.) Brave has served me well, and has spoiled me with no ads. (I believe I have a free version of AdBlock on Safari. I don't know how to find out, except the next time I get a window asking me to subscribe to a paid version.) Patsy

Safari "tracker blocking"
2
Several updates ago, I noticed Safari "Tracker blocking" statistics. I thought it was interesting and would check it every time I launched. I noticed it was always between some number between 80 - 100. A recent Safari update increased the statistics had doubled¡but that statistic is now twice what that 80-100 range it used to be. Is it really valid? M1 iMac 2021 Sequoia 15.4.1 Safari 18.4

Time Machine - Not connected? But on desktop
8
I got my wife a new Mac Mini and a hub containing an MVMe SSD that I set up as the Time Machine drive. This all about ten days ago. I checked today and found that the Time Machine is not backing up. In Time Machine settings it states: Next backup after disk is connected. However, the disk is on the desktop and also shows up in Disk Utility as Time Machine. I reformatted it and also ran First Aid. Any idea as to how to proceed with this? Cordially, Jim Willett

New Mac - Music question
11
I keep my music files on an external drive and have done so for years due to having a large library. I have a new Mac Mini M4 and when I open my music app all is there with one exception - it shows nothing on the Plays column. How do I get this to work again showing my years of plays? Thank you in advance for any help provided. Cordially, Jim Willett

Help with an old PowerMac
I have an old PowerMac that choked on something on an external SD. It now won¡¯t finish booting. I recently had this problem, but somehow resolved it. I get to the gray screen with the logo, in normal startup, and in safe mode I get the addition of a spinning gear, but it never finishes booting. It had been without power for too long and the CMOS battery had died. I replaced it with an old battery that had a full charge. Thru some weird order of steps, I got it to run again, but since now it won¡¯t boot. It is a G4 2002 Quicksilver, overclocked and dual CPU. It had previously run stably for 10 years. Can someone here make some suggestions, or suggest a list that might help? Brent On my late 2012 Mac mini running 10.15.7

Laser Printer Problem
6
I have a Brother HL-L5200 DW Laser Printer that I purchased in late 2017. Recently, it¡¯s done a VERY poor job printing on envelopes (the output is grey, not black, and easily smudged on envelopes, sometimes to the point that the post office rejects envelopes printed with it. Its status printout says that the Toner Cartridge has around 40% of its life remaining, and the Fuser Unit >>90%. I¡¯ve printed 6662 pages, only 140 of them from the multipurpose tray (principally the envelopes). The status also says the ¡°average coverage¡± is only 5.06%. I have no idea what to do to improve its printing. I¡¯ve never replaced the Fuser Unit, but the self-diagnostics page printout seems to say it¡¯s fine. Randy, since you are SO familiar with Brother printers I¡¯m hoping you might have some suggestions. Thanks so much, -- Jim Robertson

MacBook Air on Sale at Best Buy
Just FYI, new MacBook Airs are on sale for $150 off at Best Buy. I don't know how long the sale will last. I think the same discount is available on Amazon.com. I bought one at the full price, saw the discount, and was able to get a rebate for the difference because it was still within their 15 day return policy. NAYY -- Bev in TX

Problem Renaming in Numbers' & Pages' Document Managers on iPad
I thought that I had sent this, but I don't see it in groups.io. Hopefully this is not a repeat! ? Every once in a while, I've encountered a problem renaming files in both Numbers' and Pages' Document Managers on my iPad. This morning I finally figured out the complex situation in which the problem occurs, and thought I'd let the group know in case anyone else has encountered the same difficulty. In Numbers' Document Manager, with: iPad viewed in landscape AND Files are shown in a list AND viewing Recents folder AND the file list is pulled down, so that "new Spreadsheet" and "Choose a Template" are displayed above the file list AND The top file in the list is renamed Then the file's name is hidden from view during the rename, making it very hard to type a new name. Ditto for Pages, with the exception that "Start Writing" is shown instead of "New Spreadsheet". I've reported this to Apple. There are many workarounds; just do ONE of the following: Turn the iPad to Portrait mode OR display files as icons OR view the file in it's actual folder, rather than Recents OR don't pull down the file list, so that "new Spreadsheet" and "Choose a Template" are NOT shown above the file list OR reorder the files by using a different sorting method so that the file to be renamed is no longer at the top of the list (e.g., by latest date to by oldest date, or by date to by Name, etc). OR rename the file in the Files app. -- Bev in TX

FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE
6
Hi everyone! When I decided to put my database of the very best free software for the Macintosh on a Web site for everyone, I had no idea that I'd be filling an unfilled niche and that the site would be so popular. There are other Web sites that list free software for the Mac, but few of them vet the software for usability and desirability. I also had no idea that there was SO MUCH really good free software for the Macintosh! I've just drastically updated the page, and it's now up to 237 listings of really nice free software for the Mac! FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE http://www.macattorney.com/free.html Among the latest additions are very advanced graphics programs, programs that use AI to do things that were very hard/expensive to do previously (such as speech recognition/transcription), genealogy programs, and a number of nice utility programs. If you haven't gone through all of the listings recently, it's worth looking through them again. There are sure to be free apps that you will find that will prove to be invaluable. The page is entirely non-commercial, I don't make a cent from it. I want to point out that I'm not an expert Web developer...far from it. I'm just an enthusiast. So the site looks a bit amateurish. But hopefully it is still very useful and interesting. I also acknowledge that the site doesn't yet support HTTPS. I'm getting to it. (If this turns you off, please just ignore the page, rather than harassing me about it.) Please spread the word about the Web site to others! Mac Mini M4 Storage Upgrade
Just in case anyone is interested in updating the storage in a Mac Mini M4, I have completed the installation in two machines that I wrote about earlier. The first SSD drive I bought from expandmacmini.com. I received it about a month and a half after placing my order. I kept running into a problem trying to do the DRU Restore, getting an error message each time. I tried connecting the MM M4 to three different Mac M computers, changing cables, and finally solved the problem by reseating the SSD. However, my really bad experience was that I wrote Expand Mac Mini several emails asking for help or advice during this time and have yet to receive a response. The second SSD I purchased for my wife's MM M4 was from Amazon. It was delivered much quicker than Expand Mac Mini. However, there was someone else's ID and password on it after doing the Restore and booting it up. Obviously it had been used prior to shipping. A second Restore fixed the issue. This made no sense to me and I think God intervened after all of our prayers. My experience with the procedure is that it is a simple upgrade to swap the original SSD with a new larger SSD. I went from 256GB in each Mac to 1TB in one and 2TB in the other Mac Mini. All this for MUCH less than Apple charges. Cordially, Jim Willett

iPadOS 18 Control Panel¡¯s Sound Control Icon
6
I wear HAs (Hearing Aids) that I connect to my iPad. In the past, I was always able to readily see that they were connected by looking at Control Panel¡¯s Sound control, where: speaker = iPad¡¯s speaker headphone = headphones ear = hearing aids Yesterday I noticed that even though audio is being routed to my HAs, the icon displayed on the Sound control is a headphone, not the ear as I expected. I¡¯m wondering whether anyone else has noticed this? I¡¯m running iPadOS 18.2. As an aside, I¡¯m also having more HAs connectivity issues. I used to very infrequently encounter such problems. -- Bev in TX
