Yet one more opaque iOS 18 alert
3
When I asked Siri to play the playlist I mentioned in my post a few minutes ago, I also go this alert [To listen to Apple Music, you'll need to accept the latest privacy agreement.] I have searched high and low for what this alert and the alert in my previous email actually mean, and came up empty handed. Re this alert: nowhere could I find where this ¡°latest privacy agreement¡± is on the iPhone so that I can accept it. Bob

[iPad] Cellular vs. WiFi/VPN Security
7
Thanks, Jim, for the reply. With my admitted virtually non-knowledge of computer or phone security, that¡¯s the impression I pretty much had too. However, I just started using VPN and I asked because frankly I thought someone would reply something along the lines that cell data is so massive, complex or financially corporation-driven that trying to protect your cell data is too important to assume it¡¯s better than WiFi. Any ideas about where your impression comes from or do you actually recall expert opinions or research on this? Thanks very much, Dick ----------------------------- Richard E. Navigation weirdness
25
I had an odd experience a few nights ago. Rather than go straight home from work, I went to a certain branch of my bank to get some cash. This part wasn¡¯t the problem--the route from work to the bank is very straightforward, and I¡¯ve done it before. The plan was to go from the bank to these destinations: Destination A: Cafe about a mile from the bank, where I planned to get a bite to eat. Destination B: Bookstore 2 or 3 miles from the cafe, where I was going to an author¡¯s appearance. Destination C: Home, ~15 miles from the bookstore. What made this tricky was that this was all in a neighborhood with which I¡¯m not very familiar. I had literally never been to the cafe and the bookstore. I printed out hard copy Bing Maps directions, and it turned out to be good that I did. When I tried to go from the bank to the cafe, neither navigation app I tried (Waze and Apple Maps) was able to interpret and accept the destination. I had to rely on the printed directions. When I tried to set a destination for the bookstore and later for home, it was the same story. Waze did give me occasional warnings like ¡°railroad tracks ahead¡± and ¡°stalled vehicle ahead,¡± as it normally does. After the reading, I had no luck entering my home address as the destination. At this point it was too dark to read the printed directions. I guessed, correctly, that if I followed a certain nearby street westward, it would lead me into an arterial with which I was familiar, and I¡¯d be able to get home with no help from the iPhone. I put the phone in the cupholder on the console. At a couple of points I took a quick look at it, and the navigation app did show where I was. I assume that without knowing my destination, it couldn¡¯t use my current location to direct me. Why would something like this happen? Was it a fluke of the moment, or would it be likely to happen in that neighborhood again? The neighborhood is pretty far out of my way, and I was there only because I was very interested in the reading. I don¡¯t really have the time to make another trip there to test the hypothesis. FWIW, my wireless carrier is T-Mobile. Thanks for your thoughts.

Cellular vs. WiFi/VPN Security
Pardon the simplistic query, but I recently started using a VPN to try to improve my online security on an iPhone 11¡¯s cellular and WiFi signals and an iPad (9th) using WiFi or using my iPhone Hotspot. The VPN will apparently connect to my iPhone cellular network as well as WiFi. I¡¯m a retired BC US physician and iMac+iPhone+iPad user for >30 years, but no security expert. My basic question is for cellular iPhone use, AT&T in this case, is using the VPN beneficial for better security or is it superfluous except for WiFi? Hi All

I haven¡¯t received a message from this group in quite sometime. Is everyone ok? No iPhone problems? Anyone keeping up with the development of iOS 18? Is anyone interested in what AI will be bringing to the iPhone? -Alice

[OATS] Removing incorrect email addresses from recents
?Hello, Jennie, After reading all the ~10-12 posts on this topic you started, I just need to clarify one point. I usually work on my iMac but it¡¯s temporarily in storage during a move, so here I¡¯m asking about only iOS on my iPhone 11 and iPad 9th. I¡¯m very familiar with what others have said here about removing phone #¡¯s or email addresses from Contacts, and in the iOS Phone app there¡¯s a clearly marked subsection named ¡°Recents.¡± If you could be so kind as to clarify for me, is there such an app subsection or location as ¡°Recent EMail Addresses¡± or the like on iOS or iPadOS? In my iOS Apple Mail app, of course in the Mailboxes there are all the emails I haven¡¯t deleted yet, but that¡¯s not just a Recent email address list. Thank you, Dick ----------------------------- Richard E. Johnson, ScM, MD recmsoj1@... recmsoj@... recmsoj@... Sent from iPad (9th) iPadOS 17.6.1 iPhone 11 iOS 17..6.1 ?W(1st), wOS 4.3.2

Status Quo
Following iOS18 news for sure! A little uncertain about Ai deployment at this time. My latest headache: I was going nuts chasing unread messages¡ some way down on the list, long scrolling up and down hunting for the dot. I get lots of messages. Settings>Messages>Filter Unknown Senders solved it. Now, I can go to < Filters on the top left of the screen, and have my merry choice: All, Known, Unknown, and Unread. My watch mirrors my choices, I am now a happy camper. Heidi

Steps to Take Before Buying Used Apple Devices
Every once in a while I hear of someone who purchases a used Apple device and then has trouble getting into it in order to make use of it. Because of security on these devices, there are some steps that anyone buying a used Apple device should take BEFORE the purchase. Apple discusses this under ¡°Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else¡± on the following webpage: https://support.apple.com/en-us/108794 Step 4 is actually applicable to all devices, not just activation locked ones. It includes directions on handling the situation in which a device is still linked to the previous owner¡¯s account. Again, these issues are best dealt with PRIOR TO purchasing a used Apple device. Password reset problem
5
Xfinity required me to reset a password for my personal email address which I use on my iPad and iPhone only. I used the iPad to do the reset. All ok. The new password works on the iPad which I used to send this email. However, when I tried to reset the password on my iPhone XR using the same method (Settings>Mail>Accounts>Account Settings) and changed the password I got a message "No password provided for (account) Please go to Mail Account Settings and. . .) when I¡¯m actually IN Mail Account Settings. So I tried deleting the account and reinstalling. Same result. Ideas how to get this issue solved? I don¡¯t know what to do next. Cathy

Getting set up with Google Voice
8
This may very well be a non-issue, but I¡¯m figuring better stupid questions than stupid mistakes. I¡¯ve read a few web pages on how to get started with Google Voice. I gather that at a certain point, you give the (presumably mobile) number you want to link to Google Voice, it sends a code by text to that number, you enter the code on their webpage, and you continue from there. I don¡¯t have the exact link handy, but ISTR that one web page said you can try to link to a given number only once. When I got my cell phone, at first I got calls for the person who¡¯d had the number before me. (Her first name was Amy and her last name began with B, so, coincidentally, we had the same initials.) I told the callers that she no longer had the number, and the calls for her tapered off. I¡¯ve had my current cell number for quite a few (I think at least 15) years, so I assume there shouldn¡¯t be a problem, but better safe than sorry. Any thoughts? Thanks.

iPhone iCloud adtivation
11
Why the heck does Apple automatically activate some things for iCloud with an IOS upgrade? I updated my SE 2022 from 16.something to 17.5.1 and now messages and notes are in iCloud and I¡¯m getting notices that my iCloud storage (the free 5GB) is nearly full. I do not want to use iCloud for anything. How do I disable iCloud on my iPhone without losing any data that may have been moved there? Or should I just surrender and buy a terabyte of iCloud space and put everything there? Grumble.

OT, HIPAA question
6
WAS: Re: [AppleiPhone] Getting set up with Google Voice, started a new email to not steal a thread. Yeapers, Jim! I never get that one straight. You know these things, Jim S. I got the breach notice from a third party hired by Bristol Myers Squibb. I was briefly prescribed a medication. I did not request assistance to get the med, or join any research program. I did not sign any specific release of information in regards to this medication, medical condition, or treatment, with either the medical group or my pharmacy, CVS. I believe I used the medication either 8 or 18 years ago. Why does the pharmacy have any of my information in their system? I can¡¯t get to anyone at BMS to find out why, or get it removed. Scanning business cards
Traffic is light so I thought I'd through out an iPhone adjacent issue I'm working on. I have about 500 business cards, many double sided. I'd like to have them scanned, run through OCR, have images attached as notes, and set up to import into my iPhone contacts. I've done some Google searching without results, and looked at hardware and software solutions that take time I don't want to devote to this project. Any ideas? dave

Computer access PIN
When I plug my iPhone 12 mini into my Windows computer I get a popup asking if I want to allow the computer to access the phone. That's fine Since the last iOS update, after I touch 'Allow' I get prompted for my PIN. That's a mild irritant. Has anyone figured out how to switch that hurdle off? dave

Photos won't sync
For many years I have used itunes to sync my iphones with my Windows computers. Currently a completely updated iphone 11 (ios 17.5.1) syncs with itunes updated to v. 12.13.2.3. I added new photos to the iPhone files folder on my Windows 11 64 bit PC and synced as usual. The new photos did not sync, and I checked all the settings which are absolutely correct. Reboots of both PC and phone made no difference. However, I noticed that the usual message to enter the phone's PIN was very late in coming, and the message to authorise access to photos appeared minutes after the backup and sync had completed. That is ridiculous. This is a pretty fast PC working much as usual. I have checked everything - as I said I am a long way from being a newbie. Can anyone offer advice please, or has anyone else experienced this Nick Hudd. Kent, UK.

Notes disappearing

I have an older iPhone 7 iOS 15.6.1 with lots of memory. Regularly at least once a day when I try to read my ¡°Notes¡± they vanish (the titles remain but no content. When I turn the phone off, and then restart, the notes all reappear. Any suggestions as to why this happens or how to stop it? Thanks for reading this. Murray Quod scripsi, misi.

Visual Look Up
3
My wife & I both have iPhone 13 Pros; both are running iOS 17.5.1. We both take a picture of the leaf of a plant. She taps on the i in a circle at the bottom of the photo and the plant is correctly identified. I click the i in a circle at the bottom of the photo and get what you get when you tap on any photo: date, IMG #, lens info, etc., but no identification of the plant. Anyone have any ideas as to why or what might fix this? Multiple restarts were no help. I have searched high and low and can¡¯t find why my iPhone does not offer Visual Look Up and here does. Bob
