Why the heck does Apple automatically activate some things for iCloud with an IOS upgrade?
I updated my SE 2022 from 16.something to 17.5.1 and now messages and notes are in iCloud and I’m getting notices that my iCloud storage (the free 5GB) is nearly full.
I do not want to use iCloud for anything. How do I disable iCloud on my iPhone without losing any data that may have been moved there? Or should I just surrender and buy a terabyte of iCloud space and put everything there? Grumble.

This tells you how to manage iCloud storage. I have 50GB for 99 cents per month and have not run out.

Did you have iCloud enabled on your Mac?

To fill up your allotment of 5 GB of free iCloud space so you will pay for more, no? ??
How do you think they got to be a trillion $$$ corporation? ?.99? at a time.

When upgrading my Mac I very cautiously check to make sure that any iCloud stuff is turned off in the early stage of the upgrade. iPhone doesn’t give you the chance.?

Yes, Apple is a business, not a philanthropic organization. When they do major upgrades, they sometimes changes settings, prefs and defaults to “showcase” the new eye candy. That is why I suggest reviewing all the settings, prefs and defaults after a whole number upgrade. The new eye candy in the software, drives the desire to upgrade hardware. More money!!!!!

The problem for me is that if I understand it correctly if I turn off iCloud for some things that data has been moved to I can lose that data.

If it were me, I would contact Apple as to what would be the best way in which to resolve this. After all, it was an OS update that caused the problem.

As to Apple support or assistance. I have yet to have one of their people refuse to help, if it is a software issue.
I recently experienced some push back on old and what they classify as obsolete hardware, a 2008 MBP, specifically. You can skirt the objection a bit, if you can relate it to a newer version, such as, will it sync or is compatible with this newer hardware or software. If asked politely, they might bend policy, but Apple has begun to remove or hide, support documents, and old software installers. Also on the older stuff, newer employees may just not know.

Hi Jim,
You don’t lose anything once you turn off iCloud - it just won’t sync. ?It also won’t be deleted from iCloud unless you go to iCloud.com and delete the stuff in the Cloud.
