Underscan on TV set - Mojave - 10.14.6
2
Every time I start or restart my computer, only half of the icons on the bottom of screen show and none of the words at the top of the screen show. I bring up the control box for the display, click on the adjustment for underscan and the screen is imediately the adjusted to the proper size. Then I adjust the screen with a large border and try again¡ same behavior. This was true also with the two previous operating systems. It is only a nuisance, but there must be a way to correct this. Prudence (was Re: Creating etc... )

#Upgrading
Separated so as not to hijack another thread. In the specific case of MacOS 10.15 Catalina, I feel that your hesitation is prudent. Catalina is a major revision of the MacOS, what with the end of support for 32-bit apps (that¡¯s a BIGGIE), a new division of the startup drive into System and Data, and more. Wait and see what sort of problems are being reported by group members. You might get advance warning of a potential pitfall. PSmith

Yahoo Groups demise discussed on TidBits talk
#MacSupportCentral
I just discovered a lively discussion on TidBits talk that clarifies (at least for me) what¡¯s actually happening to Yahoo Groups. Apparently, they¡¯re not really going away. What IS going away is the ability for users to access them on the Web. I¡¯d wager that most of us access MacSupportCentral via email, and that most of us have abided by the rule that we don¡¯t include attachments to our email posts. If that were all there was to a group (a method for collecting and sharing email messages), the group could continue. Some posters in the TidBits discussion suggest two motives for Yahoo¡¯s move to corral all the group discussions into emali: To make it easier for Yahoo or its corporate parent to harvest the traded email messages for targeted advertising purposes (apparently it¡¯s harder to do that with content posted directly to the web interface). To make it possible for Yahoo¡¯s parent, a company called ¡°Oath,¡± that I¡¯d never heard of before, to get its Apps available on Samsung smartphones (I have NO idea whether that¡¯s the case having made fewer than a dozen or so forefinger stabs on Android devices in my entire life). <https://talk.tidbits.com/t/yahoo-groups-to-eliminate-web-features-and-delete-all-content-email-continues/9956> Jim Robertson

To Catalina or not Catalina
20
#Upgrading
I¡¯m a lazy MacBook Air user. And I¡¯ve always trusted that system upgrades are going to improve my computing experience. I blithely click on the Install, it does its think, and I haven¡¯t lost any functionality so far. After reading the many messages of Catalina issues, I¡¯m reluctant to pull the trigger. I¡¯ve never made a back-up copy of my current OS prior to installing an update. I understand that some applications won¡¯t work as they currently do (have been getting that warning for some time now), but I also understand that I can upgrade some and substitute others. I think I can work around that. I¡¯ve learned that all of the music I laboriously transferred from CD to iTunes will be gone (only iTunes purchases will transfer), but I mostly use streaming services for music now, so I don¡¯t think that will be too hard to handle. Here¡¯s my issue: I¡¯ve Googled and checked Canon¡¯s website to see if my MX922 printer will be compatible and I guess I just don¡¯t know enough about what I¡¯m reading to figure it out. I¡¯ve updated my iPhone Xr and my iPad mini, with no issues. It¡¯s really just the laptop-to-printer I¡¯m worried about. At this point, I continue to postpone the Catalina install, only because of the printer. Do any of you have a Canon MX922, and does it still work with Catalina? Thanks. And thanks for transferring the group from Yahoo to this platform. I¡¯m not a frequent poster, but I¡¯ve learned so much from all of you over the years that I would definitely have missed the group had it been dissolved. Importing Database

#MacSupportCentral
Hi I am attempting to set up a new group due to the Yahoo betrayal. I just tried in import a database (csv) but nothing happened. I took a shot at a manual build but can't seem to make it format the way to which my group is accustomed and when I've made errors, I can't seem to correct or remove them without deleting the whole thing and starting over. Suggestions? Like to know before I try anything else ( like importing the group/archived images, etc.). Rob CrittersDen ( new)

[macsupport] Mac Pro 2019 - Number of TB Ports
#Mac
Hi Dan, How are you planning on using the Thunderbolt connections? My read on the Thunderbolt ports is 12 max. My understanding of HDMI thunderbolt adapters is that they allow video (not data) signal. It is used for connection of HDMI monitors to systems. I would be amazed if worked as a data cable to a thunderbolt drive. Display port never worked (for me and my clients, your mileage may vary) previously with thunderbolt for data connections. Is there any way to rediscover the origins of an email pdf attachement
11
#Mail
In my downloads folder I have an unsigned PDF letter, watermarked ¡°DRAFT,¡± ¡°written" by a named insurance adjuster, probably not intended for me, although it deals with a disaster which took my home.Using the tools available either in the macOS and Adobe Reader, the author is listed as someone else entirely, a person I don¡¯t know, and it supposedly was created using MS Word via amazonwebservices. I¡¯ve received variations of this letter, much expanded upon, customized for the insurance company¡¯s purposes in dealing with me as a claimant and signed by my adjusters. There is vigorous discussion among and between many parties to this disaster regarding the sincerity of the insurance companies¡¯ dealings with their policyholders in the wake of this disaster. The letter contains enough body text to be used as a template for a denial of request for payment; i.e., a blanket refusal in a situation in which the California Department of Insurance has directed the companies to consider every request for payment on its own merits. I have no idea how this pdf came to live in my downloads folder. It¡¯s conceivable I received it from a fellow-claimant in an email, but I don¡¯t really know that it started life on my machine as an email attachment. Is there any way to discover that? Please note that I¡¯m not asking for legal or insurance advice, just whether I can access information in my email database or the file system to give me a clue how I got this. Thanks so much, Jim Robertson

Question for SEE Finance users?
19
#AppleSoftware
My desktop Mac is a late 2017 21 inch 4K iMac, 8 GB RAM (2 4 GB DIMMs), 1 TB fusion drive, 3.4 GHz Quad Core i5 processor. It¡¯s upgradeable by the brave to 16 or 32 GB RAM. I switched from Quicken 2007 to SEE Finance for 3 reasons: Death knell for 32-bit Quicken Subscription model inevitable for Quicken SEE finance seemed to have reporting capabilities that came closest to approximating Q2007. However, it¡¯s been a struggle. I really dislike many of the UI elements. However, what¡¯s killing me is the launch time, which has climbed steadily and now can be as long as a full minute after clicking its icon in the dock (I¡¯m on 10.14.6). Just now, Activity Monitor tells me that only WindowServer is consuming more RAM (1.2 GB) than SEE Finance just after lanch (866 MB), although right now I have 14 apps with a UI open. Apple says the computer can be upgraded to 32 GB RAM; OWC says 64 GB, with 2 32 GB DIMMs, for < $200 and < $400 respectively. Activity Monitor says I have a > 1 GB swap file at the moment, but ¡°memory pressure¡± is low. Fusion drive seems to be working normally, but I think if I were to venture inside it would go bye-bye in favor of an internal SSD. My question: First, for other SEE Finance users, are launch times like this typical on relatively current hardware? Second for iMac users who¡¯ve been inside, is this kind of surgery something a non-stupid but non EE-certified user can accomplish on the dining room table (without ruining my marriage)? And for experienced macOS users in general, is a RAM upgrade likely to help enough to make this worthwhile? I¡¯ve done lots of screwdriver and Torx-driver requiring upgrades on Macs over the years, including processor swaps, and even snipping a motherboard resistor and a bit of soldering on an early Mac Plus (to bring it up to the then astounding RAM of 4 MB (remember, the original Mac could talk and Captain Magneto could step around that tiny screen powered by only 128 KiloBytes of RAM). However, I¡¯ve never lifted the screen off any iMac, nor replaced a car windshield using suction cups. The nearest Apple Retail store is 256 miles and two states away in Spokane. (I know because I suggested a pilgrimage to Spokane to my spouse when we learned that a little wrinkle in our Audi Q5¡¯s left rear fender meant that the car has to be flatbed-transported there¡ªalso the closest Audi dealership¡ªfor collision avoidance sensor recalibration after someone in an unidentifiable pickup of indescribable color, somewhere between primer and baby-poop, backed into it while we were ¡°securely stationary" in a parking garage eating sandwiches; far from attempting to flee, instead the somewhat confused ¡°other party" pulled forward for another attempt. which in his cannabis fueled state likely would have been no more successful than the first). My wife was uninterested in the trip; of course, I ¡°forgot¡± to mention it¡¯s also the closest Nordstrom Retail Store. Jim Robertson

Upgrading a 2017 iMac's RAM and storage (was Re: [macsupportcentral] Question for SEE Finance users?)
8
#Upgrading
!st, apologies for not starting a brand new message thread. Some of the hardware issues were in the original topic discussion, so I¡¯ve decided to (I hope) let the server software keep them linked. Continuing various tests on launch times for SEE Finance related to last restart of my iMac, number of other applications open, etc., I¡¯ve decided that, when I have time, I¡¯m going to replace my Fusion Drive with a PCI-e express 1 TB SSD as my boot volume, possibly replace my 1 TB 5800 RPM internal drive with a SATA SSD, and boost the RAM to 32 GB. The SSD-SATA drive decision isn¡¯t firm yet, with the greatest incentive being never to have to do this again. I¡¯m thinking this will extend the useful life of my iMac for many years, although I know I¡¯ll miss 10 Gbit Ethernet, next gen WiFi, and possibly other advances. OWC¡¯s instructional videos are quite detailed, and also quite reassuring as regards my ability to do the work. I may partition the SATA-SSD into either a native Windows boot version or install the deeply discounted version of Parallels that OWC sells there along with Mojave. I¡¯m assuming that if I install a SATA 2.5¡± form factor SSD where the rotating platter drive is now, the iMac will recognize it as bootable. Have any list members done this surgery themselves? It looks tedious, but not dangerous (but then, I¡¯ve never priced replacement iMac display modules from Apple). If any of you have done a rotating platter to SATA SSD upgrade, how would you characterize the performance boost? Thanks so much, Jim Robertson

Back up of my Mac HD

#Backup
I am finally going to take the plunge and install Catalina very soon. I want to make sure I have a back up of my Macintosh HD. I went into time machine, But all I see being backed up is the external drive which I use to bring in all my photos . Despite googling how to add my Macintosh HD, which is an sst, I can find no way to add it to the time machine back up. How can I back up my set Mac HD? Jeannie?

Cost of move to groups.io?

Another group that I subscribe to is moving to groups.io. The owner tells us that he has to use a Premium membership at a first year fee of $220 to make the move; he can go back to free thereafter. Has this happened here, if so are donations being sought? ¡ª Charles

On my old MacBookPro when I took a screenshot it would go to desktop. On this machine it used to go to Dropbox and suddenly they now to clipboard. I have no idea how to access clipboard. I used to be able to pull off a jpg from website to desktop. Now it "acts" like I am doing that but there is no image on my desktop. Where is it going? Doris MacacBookPro 2018 Mojave 10.14.6

Features in groups.io
2
#MacSupportCentral
I thought it might be useful to start a thread on things that groups.io does better or differently than Yahoo Groups, or that Yahoo didn't do at all. I'll start with moderation. By default all new members here are moderated, so their messages are held until accepted by a moderator. Once they become unmoderated, their messages go through automatically. At Yahoo a moderator would need to accept the message(s) and also separately change the moderation status, which required several steps. Here at groups.io, there is a very handy button under the list of messages held for moderation, "Accept and Unmoderate Senders". That is so sensible and saves a lot of time! Otto

Shut Down/Restart Problem
20
#Mac
Hello All, I have found one ¡°issue¡± since upgrading to Catalina and it¡¯s starting to drive me crazy. I shut down my Mac each night before bed. I follow the usual sequence of clicking on the Apple icon, choosing shut down, and shut down again. About 50% of the time my Mac will choose to Restart instead of shut down¡.and I have been extremely careful to choose shut down each time. It¡¯s really a pain having to wait for it to load up so I can shut it down again. It has always shut down on the second try when this happens. Does anyone have thoughts or suggestions about this? I would love to find a fix. Thanks for any feedback. Janet
