Separated so as not to hijack another thread.
In the specific case of MacOS 10.15 Catalina, I feel that your hesitation is prudent. Catalina is a major revision of the MacOS, what with the end of support for 32-bit apps (that¡¯s a BIGGIE), a new division of the startup drive into System and Data, and more.
Wait and see what sort of problems are being reported by group members. You might get advance warning of a potential pitfall.

Some people have problems.
Many people have NO problems.
If there¡¯s no specific thing in Catalina that you urgently need, then wait.

I'm following your advice and waiting for some time. I tend to not want to "fix" things that aren't broken and hence use obsolete Macs in my office/home if they still meet intended use objectives. I've nothing against Catalina, but I've also no reason to switch from El Cap and Sierra OS at this time.
