Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: More work on the new notifications system.
There are some ongoing topics in beta about this, for those interested in helping to define how it should work.

BUGFIX: Subscribing to a subgroup via email did not work.
Sounds like this topic has been fixed:
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/33163576

BUGFIX: After creating a group, fix text for groups that are unlisted
but with public archives.
A minor nit I noticed while setting up another test group. The landing page said my group would appear in the listings, where I had selected that it would not.

Comments about these are welcome:

API: Changed gallery_url field in the photo and attachment objects to
thumbnail_url because it's more clear.
API: Added getalbums and getphotos endpoints.
API: Changed profile_photo_id field in member_info to
profile_photo_url.
BUGFIX: We had disabled signature parsing in plain text messages where
we couldn't tell if the sig was part of the reply or the original
message. That change wasn't also added to html messages.
BUGFIX: Fixed a loophole that would sometimes allow emails from
numbered accounts through.
API: Added /chatmembers endpoint.
API: Fixed bug in /joinchat endpoint that caused it to return a
no_group_specified error.
API: Added updateprofile endpoint.
API: Added num_drafts field to member_info object.
API: Added updateprofilephoto and deleteprofilephoto endpoints.
CHANGE: No longer allowing the CSS height attribute because in some
instances we were ending up with archives that had overlapping text
at the bottom.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Wiki revision about joining a group or Groups.io #wiki #membership

Frances,

- if someone is brand new to Groups.io - the current instructions
work, but can they use the subscribe email if they have a specific
group in mind?
Yes. Groups.io will automatically create an account for the new email address. The user needn't visit the site if they just want to interact with the group by email, but the account is there without a password.

If the email that Groups.io first received from that address (a +subscribe or the reply to an Invite) has a Display Name in the From header field then that Display Name is copied into the new account's Profile, and from there into each group subscription's profile.

- if someone has joined Groups.io already and at this point, just
wishes to join a specific group.
That adds the new group's subscription to their existing account. If they were to visit their account's Identification page they'd find their profile in each group there.

But what happens if a friend says here's the email address to
subscribe to the widget group? Can the potential group member just
send a blank email to the widget group?
To the widget group's +subscribe address, yes.

Then they wouldn't have to follow the Logging In instructions?
Correct. Logging in to the site is optional.

Members who don't are sometimes referred to as "email only" members. But there's really no distinction other than that those members haven't (yet) wanted or needed to log in to Groups.io's web pages.

And if they receive an invitation from a group?
Same thing. The Invitation contains a link that would bring them to the site, but if they reply to the Invitation by email instead then there's no involvement with the web site.

I have carried out further tests and can report that if I use Outlook 2003 or 2013 the message misroutes by chopping off the "+owner" part of the address and displaying the email for all to see as a "posted message". (Note; on the test group in question I am not moderated)

However, if I use the BT Mail web UI (not, in my case, provided by Yahoo) then +owner messages route correctly.

Not sure if that helps all that much though...

Sugar,

I just went through the site and for the life of me, I need to find the link on how to create another account.

You're looking for the Sign Up link, in the upper right. But you will only see it if you are logged out of your existing account.

A new account you create this way will be independent of your existing account(s) - Groups.io will treat it as if it is owned by a different person. Which means that you will need to log out and back in again to switch between them, or have them open in different browsers/devices.

Is that possible with out having t delete my current one?

Certainly. I have more than one account, so that I can use the extra one as a backup owner of my groups.

Or you can do it by email, as Frances suggested.

Operating with two email addresses subscribed to a group means that you have two accounts. Each email address is its own account with its own login (if you log in using that address). Web or email, the result is the same.

Hi Sugar,

If you wanted a second account with your group, you could send a blank email to [GROUPNAME][email protected]
You might want to make one of them No Mail or Special Notices only so you don't get duplicates.
Or you could send yourself an invitation.

Hope this helps.

Wiki revision about joining a group or Groups.io #wiki #membership

Hi

I am hoping that someone can clarify this for me. It arises from Sugar's question. I *think* my reply works - send a blank email to the subscription address or send herself an invitation.

But I looked at the wiki to see what it said and that got me wondering whether we should break out the different cases:
- if someone is brand new to Groups.io - the current instructions work, but can they use the subscribe email if they have a specific group in mind?

- if someone has joined Groups.io already and at this point, just wishes to join a specific group.

The wiki page "Logging In" starts from the Groups.io homepage. This is useful for someone who is brand new to Groups.io
?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-In
It doesn't go on to explain what to do next - how to join a group.

But what happens if a friend says here's the email address to subscribe to the widget group? Can the potential group member just send a blank email to the widget group? Then they wouldn't have to follow the Logging In instructions??
And if they receive an invitation from a group?

What if someone is a member already of Groups.io?
So any instructions on how to join a group would work for them.

I guess I am unsure how the different scenarios work. I *think* that someone who doesn't already have a Groups.io account can just use the blank email approach or click on an invitation link.

It would be useful to clarify this section!

And perhaps there needs to be a section on finding groups. The online list is only Publicly Listed Groups. Some are restricted groups - you need to apply for membership. Those that don't say anything are open to all - just click through to join.

Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Peter Martinez

I have now established that the misrouting does NOT occur if I sent a message to the +owner address from my btinternet.com account, but not by using the mail.btinternet.com server but by using the yahoo one. This is routed via yahoo rather that via btinternet and synchronoss, so it confirms the earlier experiments and points to the culprit being btinternet or synchronoss.

Peter

Re: Out of Order Emails #bug

Nick,

I am the owner of the Tosa Spokesmen, and the people in question are
not being moderated.
I didn't think that was a factor with your issue, although delay pending moderation is frequently mistaken for a communication delay.

I don't have a funky setup here. I don't know what CMGW is, and its
not something that I've configured.
Nevertheless, I believe it is part of your inbound message path. In particular, that your custom domain specifies that server for receipt of emails addressed to you.

You may be able to verify this by analyzing the header of a message you received from some other source. The inbound path (last few hops) should be pretty much the same for all messages you receive.

The other reason I don't think that CMGW is part of Groups.io is that I've never seen it in the path of any message to me from Groups.io, and I've looked at headers I've received at two different services (Gmail and Dreamhost). My path is always direct Groups.io --> google.com or Groups.io --> dreamhost.com

I am the owner of the Tosa Spokesmen, and the people in question are not being moderated. In fact, one of the emails that was delayed was from one of our moderators! I don't have a funky setup here. I don't know what CMGW is, and its not something that I've configured.

I do have a custom domain with GoDaddy, but I am using straight email forwarding to Gmail. It does not hit a mailbox in between.

Duane,

CMGW is Connection Manager Gateway.? I'd guess that there was a problem with GIO making a connection via the manager to secureserver.? The GIO site will keep trying to send emails until it's either successful or gets a bounce reply.

I think CMGW must be a part of Nick's setup, not a part of Groups.io. Hence it still sounds like greylisting to me.

That is, it probably wasn't so much a problem making a connection as being given a 4xx "try again later" response from CMGW. Finally (five hours later) CMGW gave a 2xx "success" response and passed the message on to the rest of Nick's inbound chain.

In the screenshot, rows 0, 1, and 2 would be the inbound leg from Nick to Groups.io, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 would be the outbound leg from Groups.io to Nick's email interface.

Re: Bottom Quotes in Digests

Bruce,

Is it just me, or have bottom quotes recently begun to disappear from
formatted digests?
My understanding that this has been true from the start. But Groups.io's ability to detect bottom quotes has varied, and may have improved recently.

Viewed on the web site these same bottom quotes are hidden under a "Show quoted text" button (formerly shown as a ... button). In individual messages they pass through normally.

In other news this PC (which from past experience exhibits the "problem") uses XP + Outlook 2003. (No laughing at the back please!)

I will do the same test using my laptop (should have done it while I was away; would save getting it out again) because that uses Win7 + Outlook 2013; it will be worth seeing if there is any difference in behaviour.

It won't make any difference "internet - wise" because both ostensibly use BT, although not the Yahoo variant. IIRC my email service is provided by cpcloud.
