New iOS/iPadOS Status Icons 4
A Status Icon, which I haven¡¯t seen before, showed up on my iPad this morning. It¡¯s not on Apple¡¯s list of status icons yet, so thought I¡¯d share it with you. I also happened across another one, which I¡¯m attaching with the first one. In the process of syncing and finalizing a software update Appears briefly when connecting some USB hubs -- Bev in TX

Struggling with going online with home electronics 12
I¡¯ve had a checkered life with electric garage doors and their openers. For example: A decade or so, I drove into my garage with my VERY expensive racing road bicycle lashed to the top of my car via a Thule rack with beefy box-frame steel support rail. Although I was driving VERY slowly, the force actually BENT the that steel rail. It appeared initially that the bike was undamaged, but the next day when I went for my next ride, I drove to my starting point, removed the bike from the now slightly curvaceous bike rack, mounted the front wheel to the fork, hopped on, took my first pedal stroke¡ and slumped to the pavement because the bike actually HAD suffered a fatal injury: the carbon fiber steerer tube had cracked at the bottom of the headset! All¡¯s well that ends well, however, because my insurance company said ¡°no problem: your bike had an accident with your house, and we cover that!" A bit LESS than a decade ago, in Sonoma County, CA¡¯s devastating Tubbs Wildfire that destroyed about 5,000 homes, my entire HOA community disappeared. One of the fire¡¯s few fatalities, fortunately, was a retired widow who (it¡¯s assumed) didn¡¯t know how to get out of her garage once the power went out as the fire approached. Her charred skeleton was found in the charred remains of the driver¡¯s seat of her charred car. About a month ago, I pressed ¡°close¡± on the wall-mounted hard-wired control panel for my opener, and instead of the door moving, I heard a snapping sound as a metal gear sheared off from the motor and the chain slumped off its tracks. Fortunately, I found a garage door retail and repair shop that could do a same-day replacement. Without really knowing EXACTLY what I was buying, I commissioned a new replacement, and once it was installed I discovered that it was enhanced by Wi-Fi and an iOS/Android app that could monitor and control the door from anywhere on the planet where an internet connection was available AND report the door's current open/closed status. The iOS app includes some very nice touches, such as enabling delivery service drivers to open and close the door under very specific circumstances to make delivery of your latest 32 GB/12 TB storage MacBook Pro more secure, and optional security video camera monitoring of the door's current status and even imaging whomever or whatever vehicle is . However, just yesterday I tried to complete the iOS connection for the door (from LiftMaster) by adding my wife¡¯s iPhone to the hinces permitted to control the door. The app requires designation of a primary user but is supposed to allow seamless addition of other family members. One data field required for setup is a user¡¯s email address. And, THAT includes designating whether the email address uses ¡°hide my email¡± or ¡°private relay¡± (which I think are the same thing, although I¡¯m not sure). For my spouse¡¯s connection, I checked ¡°yes¡± to that question in the iOS app¡¯s settings, but then what displayed on her phone¡¯s iOS app was a gibberish address that the app itself could not use. My guess is that the ¡°set¡± of people who might be able to address this issue is limited to those who already use the ¡°myQ¡± iOS or Android app, but if there are any of you out there who¡¯ve done this, I¡¯d be grateful for pointers. We¡¯ve solved the functional limitation by putting the one radiofrequency transmitter included with the opener in my wife¡¯s car, but I¡¯m still hoping we can get her and her iPhone added to the iOS setup. -- Jim Robertson

Christmas Question #2 (Very late) 9
Jim - I know it¡¯s past Christmas but here are a couple things re backward/mirrored text/font on Mac. This is what I found online a few minutes ago but I also found a place ON one of my Mac's apps - but now I¡¯ve lost track of that, too. There¡¯s some program (¡°Mail?¡±) which will do it but ¡ ????). So I also accidentally found a website because I was trying to find it again on my MacBook Air - Sonoma 14.6.1. The USB-C power connector on the MacBook Pro really sucks. It doesn¡¯t stay snug to provide power consistently. Has anyone found a way to keep it firmly attached?

Safari memory leak? 19
A few weeks ago I posted here about an apparent memory leak in Safari, evident on my Late 2023 14¡± MacBook Pro with 18 GB RAM (still running Sonoma 14.7), because some Safari processes would grow to consume enormous amounts of System Memory and slow down my user interface dramatically. I¡¯ll confess that I¡¯ve never been in the habit of rebooting regularly, which might well solve the practical issue, but this morning I noticed that almost anything I did proceeded SO slowly that it reminded me of the VERY early days of the Mac in the mid-1980s (when you could watch the screen update in steps while that single internal floppy drive clicked and hummed (and sometimes spit out its current resident and demanded to be fed another). So I peeked at Activity Monitor (already running, but it took about 3 seconds for the machine to switch to one of its windows, which presented THIS: Drilling in on the top item yielded less worrisome details: But it set me off playing a ¡°Sonata of Command Q¡± on my keyboard. One surprise was that the memory gluttons in the first screen grab didn¡¯t disappear until several seconds AFTER I quit from Safari, which may just have reflected HOW poorly my Mac was managing in-use RAM until finally it acquired som breathing room. Perhaps all I need to do is update to Sonoma 14.7.2 and the latest Safari compatible with that, but I¡¯m still surprised that it happens when many Mac mavens crow about just HOW skilled the M-series Macs are at managing memory usage. And, in hopes of convincing readers that I¡¯m not just whining, I DO realize that another route to possibly eliminating this nonsense might be to admit that I¡¯m not in Sonoma any more (that is, living in Sonoma County in real life), and just update to Sequoia, and that generates a question: we used to talk about ¡°clean installs¡± vs,. ¡°install in place¡± for new generations of the macOS. Is that relevant in this situation? In other words, is it likely that my eventual outcome would be better from doing a data-volume-only backup to my erstwhile ¡°bootable backup¡± external TB SSD (which we now understand likely is no longer possible for M-series Macs running Sequoia), then ERASING my internal SSD before installing the new OS rather than just doing an ¡°upgrade in place?¡± Thanks so much, -- Jim Robertson

System Data 8
I am using a Mac Book Air with M2Max Chip 32GB memory running updated OS Sequoia 13.2 On a recent inquiry for space, I found these numbers. My query is what is system data and who it is so much. Is it essential to have, and how can it be decreased to reclaim some HD space? Thanks T Rana MD

Christmas Question #2 11
The most volatile topic in my household the past few years has been my ¡°addiction¡± to riding a racing road bicycle. Montana¡¯s official and unofficial postures with respect to bicycles on public roadways is somewhat less than welcoming, and I had one life threatening crash in spring 2022 as a direct consequence of that. However, the two less serious crashes I¡¯ve been in since then, although each productive of temporary disabling injuries, have bothered my psyche very little, EXCEPT for my wife¡¯s continuing threats to sell my bike. That¡¯s led to a humorous Christmas present from my wife¡¯s son and my former riding partner when we lived in the same CA city (we¡¯re now 100 miles apart in Montana). One casual road cyclist¡¯s mantra is ¡°keep the rubber side down.¡± The Christmas present is a T-shirt , with the following text on the chest, presented upside down: OK? My Bike IS Hey, Is there any easy way to send an email, SMS, or iMessage in iOS or macOS with the text upside down? (I want to respond in kind). Thanks so much, -- Jim Robertson

Setting up new laptop for my spouse 3
SOMEWHERE in our home, there¡¯s a 13¡± inch MacBook Pro from 2017. We¡¯ve not been able to find it for about 3 months, and FindMy can¡¯t help because its battery is exhausted. And, of course, it cannot run much of current Apple Ecosystem software and won¡¯t support Apple Intelligence. So, my love has a new MacBook Air, and I¡¯m doing initial setup before she wakes up Christmas morn. I have a ¡°family¡± version of 1Password, license purchased directly from the software publisher. Is there any reason not to download HER copy from Apple¡¯s app store? Is licensing any different between the version on Apple¡¯s store and that on the publisher¡¯s website? Thanks so much, and Merry Christmas to all!!!! -- Jim Robertson

A Reminder to Say Alert 5
This is a reminder to be alert to phishing attacks¡ I just received a message, purportedly from iCloud, telling me that my account needs to take immediate action (as if my account could take any action) and asking me to verify my Apple ID. This was supposedly because I violated Apple¡¯s policy and terms of service, but at the same time said it was other individuals ¡°attemp¡± (my quotes; their spelling) to impersonate my Apple ID. Later it says go to ¡°A-pple¡± ID (again, my quotes; their spelling). Looking closer at the sender, I can see an underlying email address that is a resort ¡ª not Apple. The URLs under the various links point to various sites. For example, the ¡°Support¡± link would take you to Netflix¡¯s privacy policy. So there are several indicators that this is from a scammer. See Apple Support¡¯s article, ¡°Recognize and avoid social engineering schemes including phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams¡±. for information on how to report such messages to Apple. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102568 -- Bev in TX

1Password annoyance 19
Has anyone found a work-around for 1PW demanding manual entry of your password every 14 days on an iPad, please? (in between I use touch ID). On the Mac there's an option to extend the period between manual entry to 30 days and even to "never", but this seems to be missing on the iPad (and iPhone?). For me it's a major frustration: one of the reasons I use a PW manager is to make my life easier, ie I don't have to enter passwords all the time, and when 1PW demands one it's "always" when I'm in a hurry to do something ? BTW I understand the reason 1PW thinks this is necessary / advisable, it's to help reduce the chance that you forget your PW. I'm not entirely sure I understand the logic behind this, it seems to suggest that the biometric id (on which we all depend, don't we, eg for making payments with the Apple wallet) is likely to fail and / or is not to be trusted. I'm considering moving all my PWs into the new Apple PW manager. This is not ideal, not a 100% replacement for 1PW, but if I use it only for log-in items and keep all the "other stuff" in 1PW, the level of annoyance will diminish significantly. Keith

Bizarre Messages behavior 3
See the attached screenshot from my MacBook. Several times recently, when my wife has reacted to a message, with a standard reaction (thumbs up/down, exclamation, etc), it shows up on my MacBook app with a message in Dutch. (Translation: "reacted to..."). This does not happen on either my iPhone or iPad. Not that this explains anything but my wife is Dutch and frequently communicates in Dutch with friends and family. She is a US citizen and has lived here for many years. We have both been Apple users for many years also. Not a PC or Android anywhere in sight. Also, as additional info, this problem does not appear on any other of the users on the thread. Ideas?

best reference for sonoma 4
Hello A couple books on Amazon both got bad reviews. I've had my macbookpro for many years (14.6.1) as well as my iphone ( 8 - 16.7.10) so I am not a new user. However, I still have confusion and many questions. My icloud supposedly is full but I don't back up photos or music on icloud. A playlist entitled playlist is replicating itself over and over. I don't know why. I spent hours yesterday deleting duplicate playlists but did not finish. Today synced my phone with the mac and there is a new copy of the playlist on my mac, but not on the phone. The copies of playlist deleted from the phone stay deleted on the phone but they did not delete from the mac. Are there separate libraries for the ohone and mac? I previously contacted apple support after upgrading to sonona but they had no clue as to why I was getting duplicates if the playlist. Other playlists have been duplicated but not most and not so many times. 1, How to solve duplicating playlist/s 2. reference for sonoma 3, tackle kater - full icloud Thanks for any help. Doris

Just upgraded to iOS 18 3
Wow, no wonder people were complaining about iOS 18. There are tons of changes, stirring up resistance to change. Time to review all the moved Settings, new options, and find any changed defaults. I have run into an odd issue. I basically 4 email accounts. All we setup in Mail about 5 years ago then I bought this iPhone XR, but suddenly the phone is telling me the password on one of them is incorrect, after all this time. If that were the case, it would not have confirmed and set up the mailbox. Brent On my iPhone Xr

Minimizing exposure to phishing attempts 19
Two reasons for this post: I get too much email I worry more and more about exposing my identity online So, I¡¯m wondering whether there¡¯s risk involved in clicking ¡°unsubscribe¡± when unneeded emails keep arriving from commercial or political entities where I¡¯m quite certain that the incoming messages really ARE from whom they SAY they are, but are no longer relevant to my needs. Does clicking ¡°unsubscribe¡± basically just create a confirmation that I¡¯m a live target and therefore actually INCREASE my risk of phishing or scams? Should my strategy be just to route such messages to my junk folder instead? -- Jim Robertson
