I hadn't scrolled down far enough to notice Jim's signature photo at the bottom of his message till I looked for it during this discussion. And it's an embedded graphic that gets deleted when I delete the message in Eudora.

So not an issue for me.

Barry.

Please don't use this kind of language in your posts. It's not
necessary to make your point.

An image indicating contact information for a member's Mac repair
business is very relevant.

Personal photos in signature lines are more relevant when people are
trying to prove they're not 13. If 13 year old member on the list
posted an articulate question or response, their age becomes
irrelevant. If the information is accurate and well-phrased, they
could be any age, any gender, from any location, etc.

I’m really tired of this pointless discussion.

In my mind, it provides HUMAN contact in a HUMAN conversation.

An image indicating contact information for a member's Mac repair?business is very relevant.

What *I* am running is often not very relevant to the OP’s complaint.?When it is, I include that info as part of the conversation.
I certainly don’t think it needs to be on EVERY posting.

So I'll ask - Jim, what does the photo of you add to your post? If it's just?for the sake of it, I think you need to take to heart that there are actual?reasons NOT to do it.?

Let me answer that indirectly.
Having an image of YOU on a post to which I am replying gives ME a?much better feeling for the person with whom I am conversing. More like?a face-to-face conversation between real people.

The difference in message size between image the way I’m now doing it and no image is about the same, or less, as the difference between sending in RTF versus sending in plain text.

I'm not opposed to it, personally. "Selfish" is choosing your own want?over someone else's need, but you do what you gotta do.

Oh, come on. I’m sure you could phrase that with greater personal hostility if you just put your mind to it.

Ultimately, like I said before, when our groups.io storage runs out the oldest attachments will be automatically delected to make room for new attachments. By Jim adding his photo to every email really won’t make that much difference because if his photo happens to be the oldest attachment it will get deleted first.

I actually like seeing Jim’s photo. It makes the message more personal, and makes me want to contribute something to the discussion (though I’m still using a 2010 27” iMac running OS X 10.5.5). It feels to me more like a discussion with people, not just barebones advice. Just one person’s view on it.

Oh, and Jim, how do you remove the metadata from the photo?

Daly (a picture would show that I am a female despite that name)

Oh, I'm crushed. I imagined you as young with jet black hair.?

Thanks for explaining a way to use a link to ad a photo. Old habits die hard. I added it you your contact listing.

ok, so please use the address of your "avatar" on groups.io to display your photo. For example here is mine:?/profilephoto/232151

Go to?/account?page=viewprofile, if needed click on the Identity tab on the left. If you have added a image to your profile, two-finger click on your image, then select?Copy Image Address.

Ah!
A Mac Support question!

One of my most useful utilities on the Mac is the GraphicConverter app.
In the Mac App Store:<>
On the author’s website:
<>
This App is $40 shareware, but the author has a Test for Free version.

It lets you convert between almost any known graphics formats; it also does a lot of the basic editing operations, like adjusting brightness, contrast, histogram, scaling, un-skew, rotate, and of course crop.

If you want to save as JPEG (perhaps my most frequent operation with it), you can adjust Quality from 100% to 5%, and turn on, or off, many parameters, including various metadata and EXIF data.

so now there are two threads on this subject? okay, i'll repeat what i said on the other one...i support the use of tiny selfies such as used by jim saklad in his signature...i wish everyone used them!...being able to see an image of the poster is significant...i'd put my image in my sig in a heartbeat if i knew how to do it...btw, it ain't about vanity; it's about connection.

I’m hesitant to prolong this discussion, given how much acrimony it’s engendered, but I’ll ask one more naive question. If I do find a “sfw” potential avatar, will it bloat the size of every post I make, or will it actually be stored on the io groups servers and be “loaned” to the posts?

And, at the risk of prolonging it, I’d like to note that reading this group on iOS (at least as I have it configured in iOS mail on my iPhone 11 Pro) is really painful. Every single message in a conversation appears every time a new message is posted in the topic, along with all the html links that live inconspicuously at the bottom of the message panel on a Mac, but appear as equals with the message itself in iOS. I don’t know if this is the only option.

That is what I would really prefer: an option to display my ?avatar on the emailed messages just as it is displayed on the website?presentation of those same images.

Obviously, there *are* size considerations associated with sending an?image with every mail someone posts, but I was able to get my mail?avatar down to only 2 kB, and that’s a small fraction of the size of most?mailed messages.

jim, apparently not in every case...for instance, i see the post number when reading email such as this one...here's what i see at the bottom of each email i receive:

...as you can see, it shows that your post is number 480 ... this might have to do with my old operating system, which is snow leopard on a 2010 imac.

i agree, dave...replies ex context has been one of my pet peeves in groups since 1995... however, on the learning curve here with the new group...at bottom of message when i hit ?"reply to group" there is no option to quote relevant message (!) ...the option is available in the reply area located in the upper right hand corner...this oddity may be due to my old operating system, ?snow leopard, plus being on a 2010 imac.
? ??
