autotext in Office 365-Mac Word2016

Hi again, I posted this back on 20 October and haven¡¯t seen any responses to my query.

I¡¯m wondering... is it inappropriate to post this here or is it just that there is no one here who has experience of this?

Thanks
Julie

I seem to have lost (or lost access to) all my Autotext entries.

I¡¯ve Googled and haven¡¯t found any useful information so far.

I¡¯ve never had any trouble before, and I¡¯m not sure if this happened right after an update or before (I know this isn¡¯t very helpful).

They¡¯ve always worked no matter what template I'm using. I¡¯ve checked the keystroke I assigned and it¡¯s the same. I¡¯ve tried to find them using the pull-down menu and only the Word standard Autotext entries are visible.

I¡¯ve tried a few other tests and found a few random Autotext entries by trying different templates but none of these make any sense.

Does anyone have any clues, please? Where might I look? What might I try? I hope very much I don¡¯t have to recreate all these.

thanks
Julie

My guess is that no one had helpful information.

HI

Which version of Word are you using?

If its 2011,

The Normal.dotm used by Word 2011 is located in:

UserName:Library:Application Support:Microsoft:Office:User Templates

I take it that your personal library of AutoText Entries isn't showing up when you go to?Insert> AutoText -- AutoText, right??

What I'd suggest is that you first go to?Word> Preferences - File Locations?& confirm that the location for?User Templates?is set to the path mentioned above. Then,?Quit?Word. Next:

  1. Navigate to the?User Templates?folder in Finder
  2. Rename the?smaller?Normal.dotm [anything is fine, even something like?xNormal.dotm]
  3. Copy or move the?larger?Normal.dotm from the?My Templates?folder to the?User Templates?folder (you can keep the original as a backup if you Copy)
  4. Launch Word & check to see if your missing AutoText is restored.

If all goes as expected you can then delete the file you renamed.

My assumption above is that a new normal.dotm file was created and the older one is there.

For Office 2016 (or Office 365)
the Normal.dotm file location is?

UserName:Library:Group Containers:Microsoft: some random number.Office:User Content:Templates

You should also be able to navigate to those folders, launch Time Machine, and restore the file from when it worked into the appropriate current location.

Hope that helps.

Paul

What else did you do about that time, like upgrade or trash something?

It's my understanding that autotext entries are part of the Preferences > Autocorrect tab, so probably embedded in the preferences .plist file...

The only helpful suggestions I may offer otherwise is to identify and locate the Word preferences file, and once you have that filename, copy it down somewhere. Then try to locate the same file in TimeMachine backups at a date that you know it worked, then copy the old file somewhere. Once you exit TimeMachine, over-write the new preference file with the recovered old one and restart Word. That SHOULD work, but in any case, clone your system and make a TimeMachine backup immediately before you do this, in case it does not...

It turns out that the preference file is a *.plist file as per this document...

So if you can find your old one in TimeMachine, you should be able to replace the new one with the old working one without having to reinstall Word....

---

I suppose Paul's suggestion begs the question of where are the autotext entries actually stored? In my Word 2011? I found them in Word > Preferences > Autocorrect
Are they part of the preferences file ¨C as I posited above ¨C or are they included in the "Normal" document template that is stored elsewhere?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

It is indeed Word for Mac 2016/Office 365 (see subject line). I haven¡¯t deleted any relevant files.

I think it¡¯s going to be Sunday morning at the earliest before I get a chance to explore and check out the suggestions I¡¯ve been given.

Hi Julie!

I don¡¯t have Microsoft Office of any variety and have no idea what you are talking about. I use Apple Pages which serves my meager needs. Sorry. But I thought that since I had no useful information to offer that I would not reply.
