Elvas Sunday, 2016
In June 2016, I took a Capitol west from Roseville and saw how much work has been done on the new McKinley Village development between the UP Martinez Sub and Business 80 freeway in Sacramento, near Elvas.? On 3 July 2016, I took the dogs for walk and checked it out. An underpass is being built near Elvas junction, requiring temporary realignment of some tracks, and buildings are under construction in the new development. I planned my trip trip to see #6 come through and I was pleasantly surprised to see heritage P42 156 as second unit on the train. It had led the Zephyr in June 2016 when Anne and I went to Truckee.? In 2022, McKinley Village is completely built with dozens of new houses and several parks between the freeway and railroad. Mike Tisdale |

Casa Loma Saturday, 2011
DPU 5564 pushes the Roper at Casa Loma, 28 May 2011 Casa Loma is between Alta and Blue Canyon, California on a stretch of the Donner Pass route that is separated from I-80 by a ridge. On clear days, there is a view into the American River Canyon here and at one time the spot was called American on the railroad. The Roper was the MRVRO, the Roseville to Roper Yard in Salt Lake City manifest train. It has since become the MRVOG, with its east end in Ogden, Utah. Mike Tisdale |

Answer: Grizzly Siding, just east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, assuming both trains are on time. Show your work: Grizzly siding east of Glenwood Springs in Glenwood Canyon was a classic spot for the CZ to meet in the days when the trains were 17 and 18. Sloat Saturday, 1983
UP 3669's caboose passes UP 3782. UP 3782 east was holding in the Sloat, California siding for UP 3669 west. For some years a group of us camped out at Sloat, between Keddie and Portola in the Feather River Canyon, watching trains, drinking beer, swimming in the river and generally having a good time. We called these campouts the Fry Yer Ass trips, because it was hot in the summer. We even had a logo of a donkey, Donkey Hodie, in a frying pan, and used on t-shirts 25 June 1983 Mike Tisdale |

Phil, the heavy code lines suggest that this may be commuter territory.? However, no evidence of third rail, hence my question.? West Shore, such as Dumont, heading for Weehawken for a car float operation?
Harlem Division, west of North White Plains? Hudson Division, west of Croton North?
Those would seem to be the choices.

He likes to grab old photos from a lot of rail and non-rail sites, and he assembles them into folders and he has a large collection.? I imagine the original sites vary a lot with respect to photo info, date, etc. ? However, I can be sure that the destination was New York City or nearby.? Safety Valve Thursday, 2019
Cumbres and Toltec K-36 2-8-2 489 lifting the pops on the 4% at Lobato. This is on the climb from Chama, New Mexico to Cumbres Pass. The fireman must have been hot dogging it to lift the safety valve going up a 4% grade, but the train was only one or two cars over the limit to require a second engine...the next day's train was a bit shorter and didn't have a helper. 9 Oct 2019 Mike Tisdale |
American River Wednesday, 2022
I took the dogs for a walk at the American River at Johnston in Sacramento. A westbound train was stopped with its rear end on the bridge. Another westbound and an eastbound came by while we were there and then, after our walk, I drove to the 28th Street grade crossing in mid town Sacramento, where the head end of the stopped train was parked. I didn't see a crew, so maybe this train was run out of Roseville and parked until UP could get a crew. Mike Tisdale |

Some internet searching for Kyle 2037 shows it as a former SP GP20E.? I see what I assume is a paper air filter box ahead of the dynamic brake bulge and fan.? Doesn't this indicate a rebuilding that eliminated the turbocharger? I agree that seeing a running GP20 of any variety in 2014 is pretty good -- and especially given the relatively (for EMD) small number produced. I had written an article in 1976 about the Penn Central GP20 fleet, all having come from New York Central's order for thirteen.? The turbochargers had been removed in a rebuilding program and the paper air filter box was part of that.? I have always been partial to the GP20, as a result of those NYC units, and it has therefore always been one of my favorite EMD models to see. NYC ordered twenty-five RS-32s from Alco and those were used for only a very few short years on premium freight and Flexi-Van intermodal runs, often in a set of three and sometimes even four.? They were pitched off of the "hot" symbols, as were the small number of GP20s, by the rapid placement and delivery of orders for GP30s and then GP35s, as NYC modernized the locomotive fleet under Al Perlman.? Even that didn't last long as U25B, U28B, U30B, and GP40 orders began arriving and immediately went to the premium runs.? That was all occurring when I was too young to be a railfan, but it is what appears from lots of photographs and articles about NYC power practices in the 1960s. The RS-32, of course, was even more rare than the GP20.? The NYC's fleet was the largest of only two -- SP having the ten that made up the only other fleet.? Those NYC RS-32s came to populate secondary runs, but then also came to dominate Penn Central regional operations in Upstate New York, being based for maintenance at DeWitt Shops in East Syracuse NY.? When I went to college in far northern New York, in the St. Lawrence River Valley, it was Alco heaven for the local operations... RS-32s everywhere, it seemed, on the locals on the St. Lawrence Division mainline and all of the branches. When Conrail closed out the Alco era, it seems that C&NW picked up quite a few of the former NYC RS-32s.? The former NYC GP20s ended up on Conrail, based in Indiana, and then also went with the winds to a variety of shortlines.
