Fremont Friday, 2015
As the KMNOA cleared, a Sacramento-bound Capitol arrived. I wished i was getting on it to go home rather than having to drive back, but we needed the car to get Elzabeth to the airport in time earlier that day. That is the DPU of the KMNOA (Stack train, Marion, Arkansas to Oakland). The train had come to the Bay Area via Altamont Pass and Niles Canyon and would turn north on the Mulford Line to complete its run to Oakland. The Capitol is running San Jose to Sacramento Fremont, California 3 July 2015 Mike Tisdale |
Stockton Saturday, 1983
The ATSF and SP crossing, Stockton Diamonds, in Stockton, California. In 1983, SP had 4 tracks here. The UP, former WP crossing of the ATSF was behind me. Today, the WP crossing is gone and the ex-SP line is down to 2 tracks here. But, it is still a busy place to watch trains. I only wish I'd hung out here more in SP, WP and ATSF days. 4 July 1983 Mike Tisdale |
Re: FW: From CNN: How a train fan solved a real life Orient Express mystery
Thank you, Phil. I really enjoyed that.?? How a 1970s Orient Express excursion consist wound up in eastern Poland is a story in itself.? I'm glad someone is running luxury Orient Express re-creations.? From the context of the article, I'm guessing the Venice-Simplon Orient Express was a victim of Covid, if it was not discontinued earlier.? I rode what was left of the "real" Orient Express from Munich to Paris in March 1980.? In 1977, the train had been cut back to Bucharest from Istanbul, but even then, I think only a couple of cars went all the way between Paris and Istanbul.? By 1980, the Orient Express was just another long distance European express with some cars going all the way and others being cut or added en route.? It was overnight Munich-Paris, so any diner that might have been on it during the day was cut for the night portion of the trip and it probably got a couple of extra sleepers and couchettes for the night run. Arrival and departure board in Munich.? 12 minutes for the train to arrive, have the arriving engine and any cars uncoupled, new cars and the departing engine coupled, brake hoses hooked up, and ready to leave.? The arrangement of the consist is on the right.?? Arrival in Paris, Here is the Orient Express a couple of weeks later outside of Vienna.? I got both the eastbound and westbound trains. Eastbound at Tullernach, Austria.?? There was a bend next to the track at Tullernach, convenient for railfans Westbound Orient Express, also at Tullernach, Austria.? That little path was handy for train watching. Mike Tisdale
