Test Post

Mike and Sam, ?I have signed up as I have had the same experience as George, with the migration of a New England railroad Yahoo group over to io.groups.

I signed on to ObsCar in 1998, apparently right after Paul started the group, thanks to an energetic volunteer at the Sierra Railroad who told me about it.

Successful Migration

Well it appears we’ve made a successful migration.?

Several of my other groups have made this move, and I have seen not one complaint, I hope it remains so

B&MRRHS "Bulletin"

Arrived in the mail today, and glad to see this. ?Volume 32, No. 1. Contains quite a substantial article by Scott Whitney with extensive photographic documentation of the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir -- and the relocation of the Central Massachetts Branch of the Boston & Maine, as part of the clearing of humans, livestock, and structures before the flooding of the valley. ?Dozens of photographs are included, documenting the mills, homes, businesses that were demolished or relocated, part of a collection of 8,000 negatives taken beginning in 1896, as the state reservoir project was gearing up. ?The story of the construction of this massive reservoir has long been written about, but in this issue of the "Bulletin" -- in black and white, of course -- we are shown glimpses of some of the massive mills that were demolished, as well as many houses, town buildings, and railroad facilities. ?This is the first part of a multi-part article, with construction photographs shown in the coming second part. ?It is rather astounding to see what was accomplished with men, horses, hand tools, and steam-powered narrow gauge operations, as well as steam shovels.

Hope this works. -- Ernest

Ernst, looks good from my end. ?What an image!? I think that I've gone from Innsbruck to Zurich, but only once, and that was about 1984.? I didn't plan the trip, but I have very good memories of it -- just spotty on the dates.? Stayed in a small hotel in the center of Innsbruck, so typical of Austria and Germany.

Re: Test post with an image

Dave,

The photo was made with a long lens from a parallel road quite a distance away. ?It was one of the few times I had access to an auto while traveling in Europe. ?I rented a car in Innsbruck for one day, specifically to photograph the line west of Innsbruck. ?I was also able to travel that line on an engine during the same trip.

The Trisanna Bridge is a major landmark in western Austria. ?This is actually the third version of the railroad bridge at this location.

To give you some idea of the size of this bridge: ?I once calculated that in HO scale, the bridge (including its stone approaches on both sides) would be about eight feet long!

Here's a Blog article about the bridge: ?

Small hotel in Innsbruck? ?Might have been Hotel Sailer, which is about two blocks from the main station. ?Stayed there several times and had very good experiences.

Though George Drury and I had corresponded for many years, due to our mutual interest in European trains -- among other things -- even before e-mail and the Internet, we only met in person once -- when we were both staying at the Hotel Sailer in Innsbruck! ?(I had provided George a small amount of input to his Railfan Guide to Austria -- but it developed that we had independently found many the same small-town hotels in Austria.)

The Late George Drury

开云体育

Ernest,? sigh... George Drury.? I still miss him.? What an astounding individual! His sense of humor was just about the best that I ever encountered.? My father had a very dry, very quiet sense of humor, but George topped that in spades.? That, and his cats, and his cooking.? David Lester and his wife and I all were invited to stay for the weekend with George at his house in Milwaukee, the year that the Center for Railroad Photography and Art held the annual CRPA "Conversations" convention in Milwaukee.? That was to celebrate the late Ted Rose's photography, in one of CRPA's early and spectacular railroad photography exhibits.?

It was just a great weekend, good company, great food, good discussions all around.? Snowball, one of the two cats, up to his usual! A few months later, George came and spent a night at my house, in Massachusetts, while on his way to see his brother and sister-in-law in New Hampshire.

I have all of George's various guides to rail travel in the countries of the EU, and I am glad to have them.? I do not get a lot of time to try new things, but I get to London twice a year, Nuernberg once a year, and Paris and a trip on SNCF to and from La Rochelle, once a year.? I did something interesting this past January, a trip to a small town outside of London to sit through a "railwayana" auction -- a "railroadiana" sale, we would call it, here in the US.? A man who has a small business, selling British vintage original railway posters, told me about the auction and said that he would have a small exhibit there.? I had written to him as I had been thinking about one of his posters for about four years or so.? Yes, I went, had a wonderful weekend in a lovely and very friendly traditional British inn in the center of town, and, yes, came away with the poster.? Yes, and two more that I had not planned to buy, as well.? Very glad to have them, for sure.

There is just so much to explore in the EU and in the UK, for sure.? George was on to something, I think, and I thank him for pushing me to explore more, even though I was never able to go with him on one of his trips. One in particular caused me quite a bit of angst, as it was to be a trip in July to visit railway bridges, viaducts, and other structures -- with Bill Middleton.? I am convinced that if I had been able to carve out the time to make that trip, and somehow come up with the funds to pay for it, that I would have come home in a box.? I would never have survived the combined onslaught of not one but two such dry jokesters... George Drury and Bill Middleton! I would have died laughing several times over, each day, no question about it.?

What incredibly wonderful individuals, so down to earth, so astoundingly knowledgeable.? I still regret that I just could not make that trip, and now both George and Bill are gone.? I credit the CRPA conventions with the introductions to both -- and as Bill Middleton gave his presentation at Lake Forest, I sat in the dark and tried to write a few notes.? I spoke with him afterwards and to my astonishment, I found that he did occasionally sell large wet-chemistry traditional darkroom prints of his photographs, so I have four of his (printed by his long-time friend, Stan Kistler!), which came in the mail months later.???I couldn't make the "Bridges of Britain" trip with George and Bill, but I do have something to think about, as reminders of both of these men.? One of those Bill Middleton b/w images was that of milk cans being loaded into a baggage car on a Northern Pacific branchline train, somewhere in deepest North Dakota.? A remarkable record of what has past.

George and Bill were both tremendous people, tremendous historians, great writers.? Doggone great people, as well.

The strange things that come from these CRPA conferences!

The photo came through for me as well.? Mike Valentine has recently moved in Innsbruck and has been sharing posts of his new life on Facebook, including a photo of the Trisanna Bridge.??

We stayed at the Hotel Bergisel in Innsbruck.? It is in the hills south of the central city.? The guidebook said to take one tram line to the end and then walk uphill.? We did and enjoyed beautiful views, including, with my 200 mm lens, of the main train station.
