very unusual train on NYC RR in 1930(?)

A few months ago someone (Mike T?) said that it was unusual to see a train not pulled by a locomotive.? I¡¯m doing this from memory, so I hope I didn¡¯t misquote. ? A friend sent me the photo below.? Classic view of NYC steam, but look at the train.? Behind the gondola are 10 cars destined for the new ¡°IND¡± New York subway system, followed by the caboose.? Probably built by American Car and Foundry, St. Charles, MO. ? Phil Burton ?
