Email text width setting in email browsers from Genealogy groups. #email #email settings #email

When a group owner sets posts on their group, is there a text width setting as most emails come to my iMac with half the screen wasted and excessive scrolling required to reach the bottom of a Digest email?

Changes to my email browser does not fix this, so I assume it comes from the page width and text length settings somewhere else.?

I include a sample.

John

[My guess is that the] original sender of the "reply to subscribe" message did not realise that he needs to press REPLY in his mail program in order to confirm his subscription, so he did what some e-mail users nowadays do: he created a *new* e-mail and addressed it to what he considered the originator of the mail that he's
"replying" to.
Actually, I just thought of another way this might have happened, which is due to a design flaw in GIO itself.

When someone tries to subscribe via e-mail, they get a message from GIO saying the following:

------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in Groups.io and the group
[email protected]. To complete your subscription,
please reply to this email.
------------------------------------------------------

If "[email protected]" is a hyperlink (or if one's e-mail program turns it into a hyperlink), then that address is the only thing in the entire message that is clickable (except the footer).

He might either click it because he is used to clicking an e-mail link to start up an e-mail.

Alternatively, he might click it because clicking a link is a very common action during two-step subscription of online services.

In fact, when I personally subscribe to anything online that uses two-step subscription, I don't actually **read** the mail I receive, but simply glance at the message and then click the most prominent link. I suspect many people do that.

What do you mean "when I click that"? What do you click?

When I do a test by trying to subscribe by sending an e-mail to [email protected], the test user gets an e-mail telling him to "complete" his subscription by replying to the message, but there is no link in that e-mail that one can click (except for the e-mail address itself, but that is because my e-mail program automatically changes e-mail addresses into links).

On some other mailing list systems that I have seen, the reply sent in request to a "subscribe" or "join" e-mail also contains a unique link that one can click in order to confirm one's subscription (and one's e-mail address), but the IO reply does not have that, unfortunately.

If you have that address set up as an email alias for the existing account, that might explain the observed behavior.

That sounds sooooo likely! I will go moderate that subject if possible.

I'm using a different email address.? That's the odd part.

This is part of my testing, so I doubt I will be going in this way.? I'm trying to avoid the website completely.

I will look at the link you sent, it looks like the answer, without me having to torture myself with all this testing. ?

Thank you.

You'll need another email account (or subscribe to a different group.)? You can't use the subscribe address for your own group using the email address that's in your account.? A subscription here, via email, is pretty much the same as you're used to.? No need to visit the site at all.? Also see /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Joining-a-group

Testing Ways to Subscribe - Can't stop GIO from logging me into my own account

Darlene Dimitrie

Hello everyone,
I'm fairly new here, almost a week!? I'm trying to test the various ways to subscribe and I'm having a problem.
Right now I'm a trying to subscribe via email using <list-name>[email protected]
When I click that, up comes GROUPS.IO, but I am logged into my own account.
What I would like to see is whatever a brand new subscriber would see instead, with a new account.
I tried logging out.? Still logs me into my own account.
I use MS Edge, so I tried Internet Explorer and Chrome, same results.
Made sure I was logged out on all browsers, same results.

I remember at some point choosing a setting to leave myself logged in for 30 days.??
Does this have something to do with this?? If so, how can I turn this off?
If not, any idea how to get around this; we're trying to make our group as easy as possible to log into as our subscribers are used to Rootsweb.? There, using the email subscribe just subscribes you with no other web pages involved, just a simple email to welcome you to the mailing list.

Any suggestions on how to able to "act like I don't have any accounts" and just go the normal route of a brand new user of GIO?

Thank you,
Darlene

Re: Using GIFs as Cover Photos

Thanks Derek that helps. So far the GIF continues to be animated, at least when I view it using Firefox 72.0. If another member's browser only displays the first frame, that'll work too. It's not an informational GIF, but a scene with a snow plow.

Samuel, I had to use the Search in the wiki!

In?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-Moderation
In?Topic and Hashtag controls

I think it needs an image though!

Some groups use it so that the footers in the digest are consistent (and have live links).

Re: Settings for digest options

Thanks, Duane. I wondered if that was the case, but I couldn't find any other references and I didn't want to experiment with my group.

Now I'll go ask the owner of the other group why that setting is on.

Re: Settings for digest options

In Settings an owner can optionally select either of these two options:
Force HTML Emails

Make all emails HTML and remove the plain text digest option.

Normalize HTML Emails

Strip all different fonts and colors from HTML emails.

1. Is there a way I, as a subscriber, force the option of Plain DIgest? If yes, how? If not, why is it allowed that a group owner can limit how I look at the messages?

2. As owner of another group, I looked everywhere and I don't see how that limitation was even put on. What am I missing?

Could you tell us the name of your group and the e-mail address that you were trying to send a message to?

If you go to your group in the browser and go Admin > Activity, do you see anything that indicates that your test message was received?

More than likely your email program is inserting the YG address if they have the same name.? If that's not it, you can create a contact using [email protected], substituting the actual name for GROUPNAME.? I'd also delete the contact for the YG.

On the Settings page, in the Message Formatting section, there's Force HTML Emails.? If that's turned on, it removes the Plain Text Digest option.

Basic question: using groups.io address #access

We used to be on yahoogroups.com but recently switched to groups.io.? I used to have our yahoogroups address in my contacts to easily write emails to the group without having to go into the group account page and post a message.? I have tried doing this with our groups.io address but the emails keep bouncing back "permanent error."??

Do I have to enter our groups account page in order to post a message, or is there a trick to using our groups.io address to send a message without actually entering our group page?

Yes, you can use the More menu to set a topic as moderated. You must be an owner or moderator.
