Off-list Trista sent me the header for a misdirected message that posted into her group. In the following two Received fields note particularly the "for" clauses:

The second is synchronoss saying that they received the message from the member's iMac, intended for the +owner address.

The first is btinternet saying that they received the message from synchronoss, intended for the group posting address.

I don't know for a fact about these two services, but I believe that servers generally record in the Received header very literally what they received. Which in this case would imply that synchronoss trimed the "+owner" off of the address after receiving it from the member's iMac and before delivering it to btinternet.

That's what I call a smoking gun.

Thank you, Bruce! That's what I was afraid of.

I did send her the information from the "Recent bounces" list etc. and approved her new email so she can start receiving messages again. My hope is that she will continue to work with her ISP and get it resolved at their end so that she can merge the accounts later on.

Of if not, I'll give it a while and then delete the old one that's not working.

GMF is a help group, so it is to be expected that in this group you'll hear a lot from people having problems. Don't let that color your impression of Groups.io as a service.

You can use the Subscription settings and change your message delivery to digest or summary. Under advanced preferences you can use the Message Selection controls to limit the number of messages sent to you. In particular you can choose to receive only replies to topics you're interested in.

Or, if you don't need any help with using Groups.io right now you can leave the group and come back later. We have an open door policy: drop in when you need us, its ok if you drop out when you don't.

Or just learn to cheerfully delete the messages that don't interest you.

I think, but want to find out for sure that it could be a database
that would have access only to moderators and Owners.
You can.

In the table properties, there is a section of Permissions. Included is who can View or Edit the table, and who can Add or Edit rows. All can be restricted to Moderators (and the Table / Row owner, who in this case would be a moderator).

Sending any message to the +help address automatically returns a list of available email commands, similar to the ones available in the old internet Listserv software. Try it and you'll see what I mean.

work, but can they use the subscribe email if they have a specific
group in mind?
Yes. Groups.io will automatically create an account for the new email address. The user needn't visit the site if they just want to interact with the group by email, but the account is there without a password.

If the email that Groups.io first received from that address (a +subscribe or the reply to an Invite) has a Display Name in the From header field then that Display Name is copied into the new account's Profile, and from there into each group subscription's profile.

- if someone has joined Groups.io already and at this point, just
wishes to join a specific group.
That adds the new group's subscription to their existing account. If they were to visit their account's Identification page they'd find their profile in each group there.

But what happens if a friend says here's the email address to
subscribe to the widget group? Can the potential group member just
send a blank email to the widget group?
To the widget group's +subscribe address, yes.

Then they wouldn't have to follow the Logging In instructions?
Correct. Logging in to the site is optional.

Members who don't are sometimes referred to as "email only" members. But there's really no distinction other than that those members haven't (yet) wanted or needed to log in to Groups.io's web pages.

And if they receive an invitation from a group?
Same thing. The Invitation contains a link that would bring them to the site, but if they reply to the Invitation by email instead then there's no involvement with the web site.

If you wanted a second account with your group, you could send a blank email to [GROUPNAME][email protected]
You might want to make one of them No Mail or Special Notices only so you don't get duplicates.
Or you could send yourself an invitation.
