Re: Managing a photo album

Thanks, Don.? Yes, I suspected that Move meant move to another album.? Maybe that is a way to get the order right but renaming with a prefix number might be easier.

My experience with organizing photo albums or photos inside albums, is they need to be organized Alphabetically or Numerically, or maybe a combination of both. The one function I miss from Y Groups was the Re-order function in Photo Albums, but maybe one day we will get that function in Groups.io.

As far as the Move function goes, there needs to be more than one photo album, so there is another album to move the photo too

Update Calendar from Email/Excel

Hi, new admin to groups.io.? I was wondering if there is a way that a member would be able to add an event by sending an email with all the details to the group and have it automatically get added to the calendar.? We have a director of events, but many members plan events.? Was hoping to save a lot of re typing and possible typos.

Also wondering if there is a way to add to the calendar via an excel upload.? We get a list of all New England car shows in excel and I will have to add hundreds of events all at one time.?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Oops! A major omission from my earlier reply. (Sorry!)

The sort order is viewer - selectable, which can confuse things.

When any album is selected there is an innocuous looking tab in grey (UK spelling!) at the right hand side above the album title banner.

I won't list the options here because you can find them for yourself easily enough. The main point is that what I described in my earlier reply only works if the selection is Sort by Name ^.?

Note that the sort order is determined by individual members viewing the album; owners and moderators cannot enforce any particular sort order. Some groups want sorting by upload date; "my" group didn't, and I suspect you don't either!

In a word - yes.

Photos will automatically sort themselves alphanumerically, irrespective of when they were uploaded, and alphanumerically includes whatever identity the mechanism used to take the photo in the first place chose to allocate to it.

So if someone uploads a photo called "Avocado" and someone uploads another picture of an avocado but with the name 123456.jpg and then someone uploads a picture of an apple called "My lunch" then in the album they will appear in the order 123456.jpg / Avocado / My Lunch.

If you want them in a different order (neglecting the fact that there are now two photos of an avocado, which is probably unnecessary) the photo names need to be edited with an "order number" in fromnt of them, e.g.

01: My Lunch, 02: Avocado, 03: 123456.jpg.

Note the leading "0". If this is omitted things go haywire when the number of photos >9. If the number of photos in an album is going to exceed 99 then the individual numbers need to start 001, 002... up to 999, i.e. with 2 leading zeros.

If your members have permission to upload photos then with the best will in the world the outcome will almost certainly be well - intentioned anarchy. IME members go no further than uploading the photos and don't carry out the necessary editing to have a sensible naming scheme or force a sensible photo order. As in the example above duplication is another common feature IME.

It boils down to the group owner / moderators having to try to sort things out by (a) making sure that individual photos have sensible names (Titles) (b) forcing a sensible order using numerical prefixes and (c) ruthlessly deleting duplicates or near duplicates.

Hope that helps a bit; be warned that it can involve quote a lot of work, but it can be done in easy stages. Just remember that the longest march starts with a single step. :)

Managing a photo album

I'm wondering if it is possible to alter the order in which photos appear in an album.? I have uploaded a lot of photos from our old Yahoo group, but failed to get them in chronological order and any info there might have been in the yahoo group seems to have gone.? I'd like to be able to move a few around so that the oldest are no longer at the top.? The sort options don't do the trick as there is no record of when the original pictures were taken.

I've tried opening the photo and clicking on Edit and there is an option to move it.? When I click on that a window opens with a box with nothing in it and nothing to put in it.? I tried just pressing Move and the picture has vanished.? (No problem there; I can always upload it again but it will appear at the top again.)

Can you help, please?

Thanks,
Peter

Either you belong to very bad groups, or inarticulate wombats who cant trim- but and my compatriots find the search function VERY efficient. It is also very effective at 'summarising' search results- that is it gives one summary result of a thread where there may be 5,10, 20 responses.

Your canned sig gets repeated too- think about what you also 'offer' that isn't valid information.

This might sound like a silly question but when you set either "moderate" or "allow" did you Save that setting using the relevant button at the bottom of the Settings page?

The Group I moderate does not allow attachments and as a result the Attach tab is not present in the "compose" toolbar. In other groups of which I am a member where attachments are allowed then the attach tab is present.

I was just about to press send on this when another thought sprung to mind; how long - established is your group? If it has been around for a while then it is possible that your available storage has been filled up, and that "the system" is blocking any further attempts at uploading anything. I suggest that it definitely worth checking how much storage you have used. However, IIRC there is a quirk in Groups.io to the effect that a look at "emailed photos" (which is where attachments get stored) will show photos but won't show attached documents.

I'll keep any further ideas about this until you have had the chance to check the above points.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Moved the Indivisible link in the pricing page to be in the
non-profits section. Also updated the instructions for enterprise
non-profits.
It is just a tiny bit of decorum, but I appreciate it. Don't know if it would have headed off the headache Prasad encountered, since it is a change of emphasis not one of fact.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/16667

Comments about these are welcome:

BUGFIX: The activity log line when editing a message was 'via email'
when it can only be 'via web'.
BUGFIX: The 'Vote Now' link in poll announcement emails would fail for
members of announcement groups.
CHANGE: If a group had separate footers checked, we were not resizing
any attached images according to group settings. I don't remember
why I coded it that way, but I've changed it so that we do resize
images.
NEW: Remove 'ADV:' from subject lines.
NEW: Added a 'Types Of Groups That Aren't Permitted' section to the
help.
CHANGE: In the help section, changed the sidebar so it didn't stay
fixed, which was causing issues for some people.
BUGFIX: Fixed a couple of cases where we didn't handle collapsing
quoted message replies when viewing the archives.
CHANGE: When viewing messages, we no longer collapse signatures within
a quoted block.
BUGFIX: Fixed a goroutine leak in the anti-virus checker.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: No attachment/photo icon when composing on web

Thanks. Yes, by web I mean PC-based browser. In my case it is a Mac using Firefox and Safari. It works fine here in this forum for example.

Re: Customize subscription #subscription

Thanks for the ideas. Doesn't quite accomplish what I need, as I'd like to have an automated process without admin involved, but I tried and do understand how it work. I appreciate the help.

Re: No attachment/photo icon when composing on web

Helen

When you say Web, are you using a browser on a PC or mobile device? ?There¡¯s some issues (bug?) with the toolbar on devices.?

Re: No attachment/photo icon when composing on web

Thanks Frances - appreciate your quick reply.
My question is about attachments to messages sent in my own group. Our members mainly want to attach pdf's not so much images.

Our toolbars do not include the attachment or image icons. When I said I could see them, I meant as I am composing now in this group owners forum I can see them in your toolbar, but they do not appear in the toolbar in my forum.

In my group settings, I have attachments set to 'moderate'. I have also tried with 'allow', but that seemed to make no difference. I also experimented with permissions for uploading files, but that seemed to make no difference either.

Maybe I need to allow images as well as attachments to get the attachments icon to show?
Thanks

Re: No attachment/photo icon when composing on web

Helen,

I am assuming you saw the photo settings in Settings. You need to scroll fairly far down!

You said you see the image icon in the toolbar. Is it greyed out? Can't you click on it to open it?
In Groups.io, the image goes in the footer of the email or post. Not in the body. At least that is my experience.?

Frances
PS I couldn't open your image.

No attachment/photo icon when composing on web

Hi all - hope you can help me with this frustration.
When I compose messages on the website there is no icon for attachments or photos - see image.
I do see the paperclip and picture icons in the menu when I compose here. It is not that I am simply missing them.
I assume it is a setting, but I've tried fiddling with every setting I can think of to no avail.?

Can anyone help?
Thanks so much!
Helen

Re: What Does Bouncing Member Tell their Email Provider? #bouncedemails

Thanks Shal. I will ask them to contact Charter (or maybe I can on their behalf). They're in digest mode and roughly 40% of the digests bounce.

Re: What Does Bouncing Member Tell their Email Provider? #bouncedemails

tommy0421,

I appreciate the responses but I think I will still ask them to
contact their provider. And also suggest they maybe open a free Gmail
account, too!
I wonder if perhaps the text of the error is misleading, and what is really happening is that charter is restricting the amount of traffic they allow to arrive from Groups.io's IP address.

Rate limiting would still be a problem only Charter can correct, but it may help to ask Charter if that's what's happening.

Perhaps the best way is as follows:

1 - Tick the Restricted checkbox in the Spam Control section of your group settings and save your changes.
2 - Create a member notice of type Pending Subscription containing whatever boilerplate disclaimers you need and asking for the things you want. See?/static/help#membernotices?for more information on Member Notices.

Any reply that the pending subscriber sends back will appear in the "+owner messages" section of his member record. Note, however, that this will work only for those who ask to join your group on their own initiative. If you Invite someone to join, that member will be let into the group as soon as he accepts the invitation, and the Pending Subscription notice will never be sent. Groups.io assumes that you've already vetted that person in some other fashion -- otherwise you wouldn't have invited him.?

There is no questionnaire functionality within groups.io as there was within Yahoo Groups.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Re: Customize subscription #subscription

Kate,

I'd like to customize the subscription process to have the subscribers
explicitly agree to a statement, and to collect some contact info.
The only mechanism available to help you with this is the Pending Subscription notice. You can add one of these to your group by way of the Member Notices tab on your group's Settings page. See also:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Screening-New-Members-Using-the-Pending-Subscription-Notice
/static/help#membernotices

A person who applies to join your group (assuming your group has the "Restricted Membership" box checked, under Spam Control) will be sent your notice, and if they reply to it their reply will go to your group's owners and moderators (those who select "All Emails" in the Owner Emails section of their Subscription page).

Your owners/moderators may then review the person's reply before deciding whether to approve their membership.
