Frank -- As you have discovered, embedded images are reduced to 640px in the long dimension. This was the general consensus of group owners after having discussed this feature in beta back in 2016 (ref:?).

Why? Please keep in mind that some of your subscribers will not be on unlimited data plans could end up paying to receive your big photos. They can restrict the size of attachments delivered via a subscription setting (Subscription>Advanced Preferences>Max Attachment Size), but this option is not available to embedded images.

In summary, this feature is not likely to be changed. If you don't want your images to be resized, don't embed them...attach them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Replying to messages on Web page

Wanda Hall

I am being a bit thick I think but when using the web page to reply I can't see any way to make sure the thread is also copied below other than using block quote and then C&P'ing the previous message below my reply.

On yahoo, which we are moving over from, you could expand the reply to show previous messages in thread by clicking on the 3 dots and they would be included in the email notification.? Can't see them on groups.io

We set up another test group a while back to see how it worked and am sure the message replied to on the web page included the previous message(s) below the new reply but can't remember what settings we used to do that, if any. Have a number of groups we are moving over and as a email user of groups, rather than web user which other members will be using, I'll get replies that won't show what they are replying to which can get pretty confusing as we are a support group.? Sometimes a thread may have a couple of tangents too which also adds to the confusion.

So bottom line, after all that wafflelol,? is how do I make sure if anyone is replying on the web page the previous message they are replying to is also included on the page and also in mail notifications, without them having to copy it and use block quote so all users, be it mail notification only or web only can follow newer replies and know what bit of the thread the message refers to?

Hope that made sense

It might be me but I found your description a bit confusing. Anyway... to your question.

Go to your Group's Settings page and scroll down to Photos. What have you got set for Max Size in Email?

Change if necessary.

While you are there it might be worth checking Max Size in Photos Section, although that will not have any effect on the problem as outlined.

Re: Sub groups

Thanks, Duane.? You understood perfectly.? I'm sorry not to have acknowledged your response sooner.? For some reason it did not come through to my email and I have only just seen it here on the web site.
I appreciate your help.? Thank you.? The point you made about confusing the members is a good one I had not realised.

Photos attached or placed in emails to my Group are much diminished in size - WHY

Hello? folks.

I noted that when I send a photo "embedded" in the text of an email to go to my group (I am the owner) - when I get my email copy back -- the photo looks the full proper size --- but when I return to that email -- its quite diminished.? Ie:? A photo I sent was 421 KB in size --- and when I looked at it on my delivered email thru Groups.io -- the image was reduced to 53.11 KB --- terribly small and useless to view for details.?? HOWEVER - When I sent the same image the same way via email to my original (still active) Yahoo group of the same name? -- the delivered back member message email to me? shows the full 421 KB size in the email text body !!!!

So WHY is Groups.io severely diminishing sizes of email sent images.? Even when placed in the top attachment line -- the image when opened on the email (via click on to the attachment thumbnail)? also is tremendously reduced too small !!!!

Any answers will be appreciated --? Ken Clark -- you out there !??

Re: Difficulty creating a subgroup

If this is the first subgroup that you've created, it may take some time for the changes needed to propagate through the system and/or internet.? Check your activity log to see what information, if any, is there concerning this.

Re: GMail issue : Was: subscribers on other lists are being moved to sub-groups under my group.

ken,

The previous screen shot message was composed on the website, not on Roundcube, and was a simple copy/paste that displayed fine on the website.

The copy/paste must have pasted the URL of the image, which worked for you because you are logged in.
I replaced it with an external link to an image on my personal domain, it also displays on the website, hopefully that works.
?
Yes, that I can click through to see.

My bet is still that what he's seeing is a display name, not an actual email address, even though the text of the name is in the form of an email address. Were he to hover over an instance of your group name Gmail should pop-up a box showing both the display name and the actual From address.

Or, he can open one of those messages and on the Gmail web interface there will also be a little down-pointing triangle (Show details) next to the to address. That will open a pop-up display with more information.

Or, from the More menu in the preview pane or the opened message he can select "Show Original". That will give him a page with full address details at the top.

Re: GMail issue : Was: subscribers on other lists are being moved to sub-groups under my group.

ken,

Below is a screen shot of the gmail inbox:

Access to that image requires login to Roundcube webmail.

When inserting images like that look for an option that includes the image file in the email message rather than referring to an external site. Unless the site is both public and trustworthy.

Notice how the From column lists my list, Repower and Regear at , for messages from other lists that are not linked.? The actual list names are
shown under the Subject column in [].

If the interface has an option to show the full address fields that would be helpful to see.

For example, in my Gmail app on Android when you open the message there's a tiny down arrow next to the to address. That will open up a little box to show the full From and To fields, not just the "display name" parts. With my fat fingers I find it a little touchy to hit that down arrow, miss by even a small amount and the message folds up to summary view instead (rude design, IMO).

Shal,
A little more information from the subscriber.
Browser is Safari, acess by iPhone 7 with IOS 12.2, and? MacBook and Mac Computer with OSX 10.13.2.; all of them up to date.? Apple Mail is shared by all through the iCloud

I am not an Apple enthusiast, my Apple experience is turning off battery draining features on my iPhone and fighting Apple attempts to turn them back on.

Jeremy,

One quirk to beware of is that (unless it's been changed) on deleting the last sub-group, the main (and now only) group [email protected] address is also deleted, leaving only the [email protected] address - which will be a problem for any people using or expecting the MAIN@~ address.

I know that problem was discussed in the beta group, and I think Mark resolved it by leaving an alias in place for the subdomain form of the primary group's address. But I'm not 100% sure on that at the moment.

Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up a group to replace a yahoo group that my local astronomy club has used for years for general internal communications.? We would like to have a sub group for the imagers amongst us so that those members not interested in imaging will not receive all the messages about guiding and stacking and such like.

I have experimented using my test group (PeterAstro) and have set up a subgroups successfully and transferred one of my members to it.? So far so good.

It also seems that I can still send messages to [email protected] and they do appear in the main subgroup but I just wanted to check that that will always be true.? It will be easier to explain to the members (not all of which are very computer literate!) that they can send to the original name with @groups.io after it in place of yahoogroups.com.? I didn't want to do it and then find it only worked because the system knew I was the owner.

Thanks.

Re: how to undo accidental merge

Well, I made it! I managed to split the confounded topic.
What was not clear to me is that when you split a topic starting from a certain message, the selected message brings along with it the following messages.
I wanted to split a topic made up of 2 messages (including the wrongly merged one) and each time I tried to split it I found myself with a new topic containing the same 2 messages.
Now everything's OK.
There is still hope for dumb group owners.
Thank you, everybody, for your patience and help!

Re: Yahoo Groups

sharpwitz,

Should I create 8 Groups on Groups.io or should I create one main
Group and 8 sub-groups?
That would depend entirely on the nature of the groups.

The key thing about a subgroup in Groups.io is that all of its members must first be members of the primary group. So if your eight groups are different people with different interests then gathering them as subgroups of a primary group would not make much sense.

On the other hand, some of your groups might be "natural" subgroups of another. For example, I have a primary group for my kid's PTA unit membership, with subgroups for the board, for teachers, etc.

A factor to consider is that there is no mechanism to transfer content from one (sub or primary) group to another. So once you transfer your Yahoo Group content to a (sub or primary) group there it stays.

I would rather pay for all the groups under one setting/account.
Your account is separate from the groups you create using your account. Each primary group has its own Upgrade page where you would pick which plan you want for that group (and its subgroups).

If I created 8 main Groups at Group.io, does that mean I pay $110/year
x 8 ?
If you use the Easy Group Transfer mechanism yes, in the first year. After that you may let any or all of them revert to Basic (free) groups.

If the content of one of your Yahoo groups is less important than the membership, you can invite the Yahoo group members to join a Basic group (free), or upgrade to Premium for one month ($10) to use Direct Add to import your list of member addresses.
