Re: Sound card for a laptop

Report regarding the Bluegears sound high end sound card 'b-Enspirer: (For use in desktop PC only)

Interesting! I just checked this out a bit. Since I use the Si570 I have not had need nor interest in doing so but here are my current readings. I am using the sound board in question with ASIO settings for 96KHz sampling. When I run it under the CW Skimmer program it is showing, as you suggest, about 18-20 KHz of band width. Not sure why that is and may be a setting issue of some sort.

However, when using Rocky and setting the center LO frequency at 7058KHz I am showing exactly 96KHz of band width with that program. I did not check any of the other software but will do so soon and give a report.

BTW, I believe that the 196KHz sampling on the card is SPDIF only. I don't think you can use that with the SDR kits or programs unless some sort of adapter would be used. Assuming I understand SPDIF correctly... which may also be an issue!

What say?

Hi Ken,

Yes, I should have been clearer: the FA66 is Firewire and expensive..

I don't have any other "good" recommendations. Shopping for a good
SDR sound card is really hit or miss; since the specs don't really
give the information needed. That is why I have so many sound systems
sitting around here :))

About the only thing one can have hope on is if the vendor specifies
the A/D converter used in the product. Even then they could have
filtering to kill all signals above the standard audio range.

The A/D that has proven to be near the best available is the AK5394A.
This is the one used on some of the "commercial SDR" radios and in
the HPSDR design. This A/D is used in my EMU1212M and makes it a top
notch card for SDR work. Wish someone could fine a external USB box
that used that A/D....

Alex - Thank you so very much for the break down in costs - and what
you have is where I'm heading. I started with the basic $10 single

by the time I get there, a complete kit will be available - WITH a
soundchip on board - perhaps that's on possible, not sure.

Your statement earlier in thread of " The happiness, pride and self
confidence gained is, of course, invaluable." is exactly why we build

Thank you for the info Larry - I talked with the author of Rocky and
his suggestion was it was the difference in the way VISTA handles
sound vs XP and before was the reason Rocky would not see my
soundcard.

While it's not critical yet (I'm receive only), as I can move to the
TX side also, then I will need the second soundcard. As of this
time, Rocky would be my program of choice, but that would require
using 2 USB external soundcards.

I'm thinking I could buy one "good" soundcard (EMU-0202 or 1212) for
the radio, then a cheapie USB plug that sells for less than $10 on
ebay for the sound to drive the computer speakers.

Comments from anyone on this idea?

I sure am looking forward to the time when softrock has the soundchip
onboard - even if it's in the $10 to $15 range would be ok. As the
boards change, the chip could be moved from board to board.... OR
the chips will be getting cheaper.

Thanks to all for the info and GREAT radio.

Ken -

In the Rocky View/Settings/Audio dialogue box I use the EMU for
the I/Q Inputs and the laptop sound card for Audio Output device. I
believe the EMU has only one soundcard. I can't offer any suggestions
why Rocky doesn't see your laptop soundcard, but I think someone else
in this group may have some suggestions. Best luck.

Re: Sound card for a laptop

Thanks Larry Seems to be available here in the UK at reasonable prices -
I'll give it a try
Hi Norman,

The EMU0202 has average performance for I/Q processing. The RX noise
floor is much higher at some frequencies. I put some test results in
the files section a while back under my call if interested: Files >

I don't use my EMU0202 that often. The Edirol FA66 is a bit better
but more expensive. My best audio system is the EMU1212M, but it is a
internal PCI card(s). In each case I use these audio systems for I/Q
processing and the on-motherboard audio for baseband audio (i.e. to
speaker and from mic).
