Report regarding the Bluegears sound high end sound card 'b-Enspirer: (For use in desktop PC only)

Interesting! I just checked this out a bit. Since I use the Si570 I have not had need nor interest in doing so but here are my current readings. I am using the sound board in question with ASIO settings for 96KHz sampling. When I run it under the CW Skimmer program it is showing, as you suggest, about 18-20 KHz of band width. Not sure why that is and may be a setting issue of some sort. However, when using Rocky and setting the center LO frequency at 7058KHz I am showing exactly 96KHz of band width with that program. I did not check any of the other software but will do so soon and give a report. BTW, I believe that the 196KHz sampling on the card is SPDIF only. I don't think you can use that with the SDR kits or programs unless some sort of adapter would be used. Assuming I understand SPDIF correctly... which may also be an issue! What say? Hmmm. I guess this was a timing issue. When I downloaded there was one link and it was the .2. Don't understand why we still need .1.

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for adding a new name into the mix. I had not heard of this card before and it looks interesting. The published specs show a 24/192K sample rate. So I guess the question is how much bandwidth are you able to see running this board on the SR? I've found that unfortunately a lot of the higher end pro-sumer type cards still have filtering around the 20Khz mark despite very nice specs with high sample rates. Hence my question. 73/jeff/ac0c Bruce Tanner wrote: might consider the Bluegears "B-Enspirer" . I have been using that withgood results. It is also a 96 KHz sampling card. I bought the acer last week, mainly to run my sdriq and sdr1500
(when released) "in the field". I ended up paying under $250 in a "black friday special" with 120G hd and 1G memory. I have tried it with the sb extigy external usb sound card and it works well with the 3 sdr applications i use (KGK, powersdr and Rocky) I also tested it with the hpsdr and it works well Do not think of buying the flash ram version and trying to upgrade to a HD later, unless you have VERY good motherboard soldering desoldering skills, the ram is soldered to the board NOT connectorised There is a very useful "user" web site on this computer I did look at the asus version, but I wasnt convinced the cheaper looking keyboard would last field operation Dave ww2r and the sdr1500--- In softrock40@..., "Mark J. Re: Sound card for a laptop
Mike, are all the Edirol FA66 cards firewire? On ebay they show atHi Ken, Yes, I should have been clearer: the FA66 is Firewire and expensive.. I don't have any other "good" recommendations. Shopping for a good SDR sound card is really hit or miss; since the specs don't really give the information needed. That is why I have so many sound systems sitting around here :)) About the only thing one can have hope on is if the vendor specifies the A/D converter used in the product. Even then they could have filtering to kill all signals above the standard audio range. The A/D that has proven to be near the best available is the AK5394A. This is the one used on some of the "commercial SDR" radios and in the HPSDR design. This A/D is used in my EMU1212M and makes it a top notch card for SDR work. Wish someone could fine a external USB box that used that A/D.... 73, Mike Collins KF4BQ |

Sent this reply on the Winrad list but it seemed to not make it through. I downloaded this file and it compared byte for byte and timestamp as the 0.1 version. I even cleaned my cache out and redownloaded it. Then tried it with Free Download Manager. Same results everytime. Am I missing something? Thanks es 73... works very good for me. A question please - why do I have to select the dll each time I start up Winrad? Your dll is the ONLY dll that shows in the directory (folder - I'm old DOS guy). Is there something I've not done? Thank you again for a GREAT dll to make a GREAT program even better. 73 de Ken H. --- In softrock40@..., Fred Krom <fred.krom@...> wrote:

Alex - Thank you so very much for the break down in costs - and what
you have is where I'm heading. I started with the basic $10 single band RX, now just finished the V9.0 with my plans for starting the RXTX next Jan. My plans are to wind up with what you have - perhaps by the time I get there, a complete kit will be available - WITH a soundchip on board - perhaps that's on possible, not sure. Your statement earlier in thread of " The happiness, pride and self confidence gained is, of course, invaluable." is exactly why we build and homebrew stuff. I just enjoy melting solder and learning new things - I realize I do learn slow, but something are better slow {grinning}. I have taken your list of links and prices listed and printed them out for review and learning more. Not that I am planning to start ordering just like that right now, but it will be a source of learning. Thank you for taking the time for such an in-depth reponse to my question. 73 de Ken H<> K9FV --- In softrock40@..., "alexle188" <lee188@...> wrote: with FCC requirements for harmonics): |
Re: Sound card for a laptop

Thank you for the info Larry - I talked with the author of Rocky and
his suggestion was it was the difference in the way VISTA handles sound vs XP and before was the reason Rocky would not see my soundcard. While it's not critical yet (I'm receive only), as I can move to the TX side also, then I will need the second soundcard. As of this time, Rocky would be my program of choice, but that would require using 2 USB external soundcards. I'm thinking I could buy one "good" soundcard (EMU-0202 or 1212) for the radio, then a cheapie USB plug that sells for less than $10 on ebay for the sound to drive the computer speakers. Comments from anyone on this idea? I sure am looking forward to the time when softrock has the soundchip onboard - even if it's in the $10 to $15 range would be ok. As the boards change, the chip could be moved from board to board.... OR the chips will be getting cheaper. Thanks to all for the info and GREAT radio. 73 de Ken H> --- In softrock40@..., "Lawrence Libsch" <llibsch@...> wrote: the I/Q Inputs and the laptop sound card for Audio Output device.
