New Mac - Music question
I keep my music files on an external drive and have done so for years due to having a large library. ?I have a new Mac Mini M4 and when I open my music app all is there with one exception - it shows nothing on the Plays column. ?How do I get this to work again showing my years of plays? ?
?
Thank you in advance for any help provided.

I do the same. All the ¡°management¡± info is kept in the Library *file* in the Music folder. Did you migrate that from the previous Mac?

When I¡¯ve done this, I had to set preferences to store the library on the external drive, then drag the existing folders containing the content into the app (presumably iTunes or Music). ? Takes a while for all of the music to be processed but worked. ?I¡¯ve never been able to just use the existing library file that defined things in a previous setup. ? ?Note that at least in some versions of the apps you can tell it not to make copies of the songs, but to just leave them in their original place? |
I dragged an album file from the Music folder on the external drive over to the Music app. ?The album file disappeared from the Music folder. ?The songs showed up in the Music app window, but with the Artist and Album column blank. ?So this is not satisfactory. ?Any idea why this happened??
It is also odd that when I connected the external drive containing the music files to the new mac and then opened the Music app, it showed 1,199 items, but should have been around 8,000 items. ?I wonder why they did not all show in the Music app? ??
Thank you for your advice.? |
No, that¡¯s not what I said. Is there a *file* called

Music Library.musiclibrary in your Music *folder*? Otto On 27 Apr 2025, at 21:42, Jim Willett via groups.io <jimwillett@...> wrote: |
When you first used Music on your new Mac it will have created a library file if there wasn¡¯t one already where it was expected to be. You need to find it so you can replace it with the one from the old Mac.

It might be in a place other than what I said. I¡¯m on an old MacOS version and things have probably changed¡ Perhaps try EasyFind? <> Otto On 29 Apr 2025, at 13:22, Jim Willett via groups.io <jimwillett@...> wrote: |
Thank you so much for your help Otto. ?I went back in Time Machine and Restored the Music Library.musiclibrary from there and everything is working. ?I now have 10,081 songs, not 1,199. ?And all columns have their information in them. ?
Thanks also to Bayswater for advice in this matter. ?
You guys have a good day!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThat¡¯s great news!As an aside, I¡¯ve learned a bit about iTunes/Music over the years. Our collection became too big for our Macs and was moved to a NAS years ago. I¡¯ve found that despite some excellent built-in tools and some from the excellent Doug Adams <>, I found I needed to learn some AppleScript to help check/manage it all.? Otto
