Close! The toolbar that hides is the one up above that includes the Send button. However, poking around in that toolbar led me to the answer: clicking the "Aa" is what shows/hides the format bar.

Double check you have handoff turned on for both devices. I just set this up last month and couldn't figure out why my new MacBook Air wasn't seeing the iPad. I followed the instructions at the bottom

I don¡¯t think iPads connect to Macs via Bluetooth, but I could be wrong. Absent cable connections, the only way I¡¯ve connected my iPads to my iMac is via WiFi
