With regard to your current situation …………… I take the simple way out first!

Turn OFF - completely - your MacBook Air AND your iPad (slide bar off!)

Restart both and see if there is any change.

And under My Devices. - “No Bluetooth Devices” ?and it says “Nearby Devices”.?
