New Web Site!
I just put up a new Web site. Apple's Mail under Catalina has a nasty bug that causes it to lose data. Some users have been looking for an alternative. I created a page listing all of the available Macintosh e-mail programs!

Re: Time Machine backup disk question
Howdy.
This longish quotation may answer your question. I didn't post the link because I think the original post was on a Scandinavian language site and part was perhaps in Swedish. But this part in English Is, I think, from an Apple KB. Denver Dan - - - - - - - - The oldest backups will be deleted when Time Machine requires the space they occupy, but they will only be deleted after Time Machine creates a new backup. Before it does that, Time Machine resorts to a number of increasingly desperate attempts to create enough space for that backup, while retaining an absolute minimum of one and only one complete backup. Apple does not provide guidance for the backup device capacity because it is simply not possible to do that. Two or three times the total amount of data that needs to be backed up is usually OK. However, it is also usually much more than necessary. If Apple told us we must purchase (for example) a 4 TB hard disk drive it would result in a lot of users not even attempting to use Time Machine, and that would be bad. ? The absolute minimum required capacity of a Time Machine backup volume is as follows: sufficient capacity to retain one complete backup of the source volume's contents, plus additional capacity to create a subsequent backup consisting of all files that have been altered since that previous backup, plus an amount of "overhead" that is a function of the number and aggregate size of those files—a value difficult to calculate with any degree of precision, but 15% of the size of one complete backup is a useful approximation. ? Time Machine relies upon that estimate before initiating a backup: ? You may only have (for example) 90 GB of new data that needs to be backed up. Time Machine will then require (for example, and bearing in mind that ~15% figure is my approximation, and not TM's calculated estimate) 105 GB of free space—that is in addition to whatever the older backup required. ? Unless TM is able to reclaim that amount of space on the backup volume, it won't even begin. ? When Time Machine finishes, you may find that only 90 GB of data was actually written. ? Rarely occurring circumstances can result in Time Machine's estimate being insufficient, in which case it will resort to a number of alternatives before giving up. ? Time Machine guarantees an absolute minimum of one and only one backup:The previous system backup will not be altered until after a subsequent backup is complete and intact, which means that none of its contents will be deleted (even if they are "older and expired") until after that subsequent backup finishes. Bottom line: If Time Machine tells you it needs more space, then it needs more space. Obtain a larger backup drive and create a new backup, after which you can consider erasing the existing one because it might contain a large backup you no longer need (a large virtual machine disk image is a popular reason). That will defer the problem to another day. Is it possible the popup saying that you need to subscribe was for something in Chrome, and not iTunes, since your Mac was frozen by Chrome and not iTunes, even though your attention was towards iTunes. I occasionally get a freeze, caused by Chrome while trying to work on something else. Chrome is not my favorite browser, but I use it because I am running an old OS. But this time, it hung up iTunes so badly that I could not force quit. I even went to activity monitor and closed out all of the iTunes processes but still had no luck force quitting iTunes. After trying numerous times, I finally went ahead and closed chrome. Then I tried iTunes again and lo and behold, it quit. |
Re: Can AirPods Pro earbuds be paired to smart TVs?
开云体育As I recall, when I got first generation AirPods, the instructions say that to pair with an iPhone you merely have to open the case near the phone, but to pair with something else you have to push the button on the back of the case. If you just got them you are probably covered, as with other Apple equipment for 90 days free phone support. Give them a call. |
Re: Time Machine isn't working
This is what I have done so far. I erased the LaCie drive (after backing up up my iMac to a drive connected to my Airport Extreme which took FOREVER!) using Disk Utility. Then I turned off Filevault as suggested by Denver Dan and it took over 24 hours! He did caution patience. Now I am doing a Time Machine backup of my iMac hard drive, using after having added the LaCie drive and my drive connected to Airport Extreme to the “Excluded list. That first TM backup to LaCie has just started and it claims that it will take an hour. I’m not holding my breath.
I read the BackBlaze article on How to Use Multiple Backup Drives with Time Machine. But I am wondering what OS they are talking about because when I open TM Preferences, there is no “Select Disk” instruction, but rather a list of disks that I can click on (I am using Sierra 10.12.6 on a Late 2014 27-inch iMac). There does not seem to be a Use Both option. II did select the LaCie backup which was listed. I am wondering if there isn’t the option to select a second backup disk, in my case the one connected to AirPort Extreme, while TM is still in the process of backing the hard drive to the LaCie. I will check if there is a “Use Both" option when this first TM backup is over. I have another question, namely when this is over, should I turn File Vault back on? When this problem first started Time Machine said it couldn’t back up the hard drive because the LaCie disk was unencrypted. If such is the case and I turn File Vault back on, will this whole TM issue reoccur? I used to understand how computers worked way back in the 80s using DOS with floppy disks and no hard drive. I took a course as part of my MBA requirements and even learned a little BASIC. Things were pretty simple" back then. Now there are so many layers underneath the user interface and both Apple and Windoze are basically saying, "there there dears don’t worry your little heads about how this works, we’ll take care of it.” Same with cars I suppose. I don’t like the resulting lack of direct control. to say nothing of what the computer is actually doing! Joan |
Re: iPad Battery Life
I have had a similar experience with my iPad mini 4 recently. I went to Settings/Battery (using iOS 13) and found that I had opened VPN and it was left on, so I am assuming that it was running in the background. I don’t need VPN where I live because there are no houses within a mile of my house so there is no other WI-Fi around. Once I turned off VPN, the battery held for a longer period of time.

Re: iPad Battery Life
开云体育If you haven’t already done it, take a look at Settings>Battery to see if you can determine what is causing the drain if it’s software related.Pat Pro On Mar 1, 2020, at 10:55 AM, KarenP <waystation9@...> wrote:

My normal recommendation is to have the space available for Time Machine to be at least 2? - 3 times the space occupied by data being backed up. You have a little over 400GB of data, and 1000GB of Time Machine space, so you’re right at the edge. And remember that when you first start running Time Machine, it will backup the whole 400GB the first time. |

开云体育ok, I’ll try that.I can’t imagine what it might be. I’m not aware of any changes I’ve made to it recently and since it’s in my own home, it shouldn’t be continuing to search wifi connections overnight. -karen

Re: Can AirPods Pro earbuds be paired to smart TVs?
开云体育Thanks for your response Pat. The AirPods Pro pair differently from the first and second generation AirPods, virtually automatically as soon as you open the case. I’m not able to make that happen with my smart TV, but I will review everything I can find on Apple published support. On Mar 1, 2020, at 10:15, Pat Taylor via Groups.Io <pat412@...> wrote:

Can AirPods Pro earbuds be paired to smart TVs?
开云体育My wife just purchased AirPods Pro. They’re impressive indeed as regards sonic fidelity (and even the amount of bass they reproduce), but today I tried to pair them with my LG 4K OLED TV, which I’ve been able to pair with Bose Headphones, my Beats Pro X Bluetooth buds, and even my Phonak hearing aids, but I could NOT seem to pair them to the TV.Am I just doing something wrong, or is this something the AirPods Pro cannot do?
