PopChar is a great little utility but now costs money. Emoji & Symbols also does the same things but is included. Tom, at this point of the struggle, why don't you reformat your drive and do a clean system install and then do a fresh install of your programs. At some point, it becomes worth it, in my view, to show the computer who is boss and reformat!! Jim and everybody, Emoji & Symbols on the Input menu shows font variations and font names. But you will need to expand the window. Click the Input menu icon at top right inside the Emoji & Symbols window (to right of the Search box). In the column at far right you will see several sub boxes. The character name at top (with Add to Favorites), then the Related Characters box, below that (may have to scroll down) the Font Variation box. Folks should be aware of the Settings menu - the gear icon at top left. You can turn on a slew of additional characters with the Customize List command. Character sets like: Arrows ? ? ? ?? ? Box Drawing Braille Patterns Bullets/Stars ¡ñ ? ? ?? ? ?? Currency Symbols $ € ? ? ? Digits Dingbats Divination Symbols Duployan (whatever that is???) Emoji Enclosed Characters Geometrical Shapes Letterlike Symbols Math Symbols ¡Á - ¡Þ ¨R Musical Symbols ? ? ? Technical Symbols ? ?? ?? ? And many more. The Latin set is very useful because it includes descriptor of all of those symbols like ? (Latin Capital Letter A with Acute). I purchased a new Mac Mini about six weeks ago and was told it came with 1 year of Apple TV+ when it was released. After reading the posts on this I tried to sign up but Apple will only give me 7 days free trial. I am not too bothered as I don¡¯t watch too much TV but I do think that Apple¡¯s advertising is a tad misleading. The only ¡®free¡¯ streaming is a half dozen Apple produced programmes and a couple of Apple produced films. All else carries a price tag, even the BBC iPlayer programmes that I can get for free. |

Otto, here's the tiny Input Menu current icon. The square. I don't recall when the icon changed. One can still open the Keyboard panel in Sys Prefs, click the Input Sources tab, click the + sign and add all kinds of different language keyboards. One can even add an Australian English keyboard but oddly it shows right side up. In Eudora -> Settings -> Attachments, there is an option to "Trash attachments with messages". Have you enabled that setting?Actually, I knew about that. And I absolutely don't want it, though I know it works for some other people. I'm grateful I have the option not to choose it. Apparently not all Mac and Windows email programs allow keeping an attachment when deleting a message. I keep a lot of attachments. I move some of them to another folder, and trash some immediately. The rest I like to find safe in the Attachments folder till I finally get around to dealing with them. I'd hate to dig through my trash before emptying it to make sure there's nothing valuable there. Thanks, though, for the reminder. Patsy |

I remember the flag in the menubar. In the early days of the single-user Mac that flag saved me from a trip to the CooCoo¡¯s nest. My precocious son bedeviled me by installing various romance language keyboard maps; just enough so that my touch-typing produced many misspellings. What I¡¯m mourning is the loss of font-specific display of glyphs on the Keyboard Viewer. I don¡¯t remember when it disappeared, or why. Jim |

You are thinking of the Input Menu (used to have a flag icon for your selected language) and the default items on it called: Show Emoji & Symbols And Show Keyboard Viewer The icon is a square box as attached below. The Input menu is turned on (added to Menu bar) in Catalina and some earlier versions of OS X by going to System Preferences>Keyboard panel then click the Input Sources tab and check on Show Input menu in menu bar box. All small files and folders. One at 2 MB, then all in the KB range Next step is to use Finder to drill down. Start with opt-cmd-i on Macintosh HD (for whatever your drive is called) then move down through the folder hierarchy, getting?the size for each. I just don't see any unexpectedly large files anywhere. They must be hidden. Here's what strikes me as strange: in About this Mac, System size fluctuates at 170 GB - 180 GB, while in the Finder and elsewhere, it is 10GB with "7GB on disk." I don't know what that means, but look at that anomaly. Doesn't that suggest a system malfunction rather than large files? Remember, I can't make a current backup. I don't want to lose my recent files, especially in Users. Recovery Mode seems to have the option to replace the OS without erasing the disk. What would happen if I tried that? Another odd thing started happening just a few minutes ago: the dock has lost about half its icons which have been replaced by ?generic ones.

Re: it¡¯s like a horror movie: my system files have eaten up my boot drive!
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHiCan you boot it up in target mode and copy the information? Perhaps a bootable system with SuperDuper and/or Carbon Copy Cloner and make a copy of the system to an external drive? That way you won¡¯t lose information as you do a fresh installation of the system, then use migration assistant for the Applications and user folder?
