Can you install Grand Perspective? It's only?4 MB.
Can't dl it.
If not, try Finder > Go > Go to Folder > /private/var/log

All small files and folders. One at 2 MB, then all in the KB range
Next step is to use Finder to drill down. Start with opt-cmd-i on Macintosh HD (for whatever your drive is called) then move down through the folder hierarchy, getting?the size for each.
I just don't see any unexpectedly large files anywhere. They must be hidden.
Here's what strikes me as strange: in About this Mac, System size fluctuates at 170 GB - 180 GB, while in the Finder and elsewhere, it is 10GB with "7GB on disk." I don't know what that means, but look at that anomaly. Doesn't that suggest a system malfunction rather than large files? Remember, I can't make a current backup. I don't want to lose my recent files, especially in Users. Recovery Mode seems to have the option to replace the OS without erasing the disk. What would happen if I tried that?
Another odd thing started happening just a few minutes ago: the dock has lost about half its icons which have been replaced by ?generic ones.
