Mohave to Catalina and Microsoft #Upgrading

I'm running Mohave; my wife has installed Catalina on her iMac.

It seems her older Microsoft applications for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc are now obsolete?
on Catalina. And I see a notice on Mohave that once I update, the same will be true.

Apparently the App Store has updated Microsoft ?applications for Catalina but so far my
wife has had great difficulty downloading them.
Would someone guide me through a seamless process to install?

Any advice would truly be appreciated.
Rick

Hi Julie!

I don¡¯t have Microsoft Office of any variety and have no idea what you are talking about. I use Apple Pages which serves my meager needs. Sorry. But I thought that since I had no useful information to offer that I would not reply.

But less useful than it used to be, I think. I remember (correctly, I hope) a time when it linked to a Font menu, so that one could see the entire spectrum of glyphs a given font could produce by bringing up the keyboard map and selecting an individual typeface.

Of course, it¡¯s possible that was provided by some 3rd party program I no longer use, but I think it was an Apple freebie.

Can you install Grand Perspective? It's only?4 MB.
<>

If not, try Finder > Go > Go to Folder > /private/var/log
and see what's in there.?

Next step is to use Finder to drill down. Start with opt-cmd-i on Macintosh HD (for whatever your drive is called) then move down through the folder hierarchy, getting?the size for each.

BTW, I can¡¯t increase the storage BBC SSD because in the 2017 MacBook Pro it is soldered in place. Besides, as the System eats up more and more storage, increasing the amount of storage would only delay the inevitable.

You're welcome Jim. When working on equipment where there are programs stored is where you need to make sure you don't have a static build up on your body. It only takes a few volts to scramble a program. Better safe than sorry.?

Hi Folks,

???? I have dissected almost all of my iMacs going back to the one with the stainless steel stalk that held the screen (one of my favorites). It is absolutely worth it, even if the process is tedious and time consuming....it's the only way to really get the innards clean. Plus, you may be able to perform all sorts of upgrades. Going from a HDD to an SDD should be a no-brainer because the cooling requirements should be much less. WRT, static electricity....I alway use an anti-static mat with an alligator clip that attaches to the metal frame of whatever system I'm working on. If you run into a problem that you can't solve, (in my case, replacing failing capacitors in the power supply of my second iMac), then it may be time for an upgrade, but there is no reason, IMO, that an iMac should not last upwards to ten years. You might not have much support from Apple, but older systems still have value. And if all else fails, and you feel adventurous, you can always go the Hackintosh route.

How does that advance any discussion?

I did point out that I once had 3 cases that securely hold a laptop Mac well cushioned and now have only one, but the point of that wasn¡¯t to wail about things that happened two years ago but just to say that I don¡¯t think that the genesis of this repetitive rebooting a few days ago could be blamed on my laptop bag(s).

Your other comment (no, not the one about leeches and poisonous therapy in medicine, but rather the one that says maybe I should just be happy the MacBook Pro has stopped rebooting and go back to using it) is more on point, but of course another (generally considered valuable) voice has suggested that perhaps it¡¯s time to say goodbye to this machine because of its sketchy performance.

I¡¯ll try to keep my own contributions less embellished and more on point.
