Mohave to Catalina and Microsoft
#Upgrading
I'm running Mohave; my wife has installed Catalina on her iMac.
It seems her older Microsoft applications for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc are now obsolete? on Catalina. And I see a notice on Mohave that once I update, the same will be true. Apparently the App Store has updated Microsoft ?applications for Catalina but so far my wife has had great difficulty downloading them. Would someone guide me through a seamless process to install? Any advice would truly be appreciated. Rick |
Re: autotext in Office 365-Mac Word2016
Hi Julie!
I don¡¯t have Microsoft Office of any variety and have no idea what you are talking about. I use Apple Pages which serves my meager needs. Sorry. But I thought that since I had no useful information to offer that I would not reply. But less useful than it used to be, I think. I remember (correctly, I hope) a time when it linked to a Font menu, so that one could see the entire spectrum of glyphs a given font could produce by bringing up the keyboard map and selecting an individual typeface. Of course, it¡¯s possible that was provided by some 3rd party program I no longer use, but I think it was an Apple freebie. Jim Robertson |

Thanks I got the offer, and it was really easy to get the "one year free" on my new device, it wouldn't let me make that choice on my old device.?
Will it be just as easy to set up the "one-year free" on my Apple TV that I already use with the TV to watch everything else? Thanks. Carol Corley |
Re: it¡¯s like a horror movie: my system files have eaten up my boot drive!
Can you install Grand Perspective? It's only?4 MB. <> If not, try Finder > Go > Go to Folder > /private/var/log and see what's in there.? Next step is to use Finder to drill down. Start with opt-cmd-i on Macintosh HD (for whatever your drive is called) then move down through the folder hierarchy, getting?the size for each. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYes. A change. ?I tried to use Screeshot (Catalina) to capture the little menu but Screenshot is often buggy. Dan, Its proper name has always been "Input Menu" but I call it "Flag" because?that is what I see in the?menu bar. So that's changed after all this time? Otto On Sat, 2 Nov 2019 at 11:24, Daniel Settles <denver1.dan1@...> wrote: Howdy. |

Howdy.
Otto, the "Flag" menu has changed in more recent version of macOS X. It's called the Input menu and now has a Square icon withe 4 little hollow square in it. Keyboard Viewer, as Otto says, is very convenient and has been around in one form or another since 1984. Don't forget that you can see and use these "special" characters in Keyboard Viewer. This is in the "flag" menu in the top menu bar.? With the Keyboard Viewer window open, you can see the effect of the various combinations of modifier keys (Shift, Ctrl, Option). Hi Folks, ???? I have dissected almost all of my iMacs going back to the one with the stainless steel stalk that held the screen (one of my favorites). It is absolutely worth it, even if the process is tedious and time consuming....it's the only way to really get the innards clean. Plus, you may be able to perform all sorts of upgrades. Going from a HDD to an SDD should be a no-brainer because the cooling requirements should be much less. WRT, static electricity....I alway use an anti-static mat with an alligator clip that attaches to the metal frame of whatever system I'm working on. If you run into a problem that you can't solve, (in my case, replacing failing capacitors in the power supply of my second iMac), then it may be time for an upgrade, but there is no reason, IMO, that an iMac should not last upwards to ten years. You might not have much support from Apple, but older systems still have value. And if all else fails, and you feel adventurous, you can always go the Hackintosh route. |
Re: My unhappy MacBook Pro
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
????????? How does that advance any discussion? I did point out that I once had 3 cases that securely hold a laptop Mac well cushioned and now have only one, but the point of that wasn¡¯t to wail about things that happened two years ago but just to say that I don¡¯t think that the genesis of this repetitive rebooting a few days ago could be blamed on my laptop bag(s). Your other comment (no, not the one about leeches and poisonous therapy in medicine, but rather the one that says maybe I should just be happy the MacBook Pro has stopped rebooting and go back to using it) is more on point, but of course another (generally considered valuable) voice has suggested that perhaps it¡¯s time to say goodbye to this machine because of its sketchy performance. I¡¯ll try to keep my own contributions less embellished and more on point. Jim Robertson |

Thank you SO much, and I¡¯m happy it turned out well. The grounding strap is something I¡¯ve wondered about, because I¡¯ve watched a bunch of OWC and iFixIt and other independent videos, and none of the people doing the disassembly/reassembly seem to be wearing them. Back in the days of the cute little box 128 K Mac, there could have been several thousand volts on the back end of the CRT for people who ventured inside, and there was no space to do what we could without being quite close to that gun. My understanding is that the threat to US is when working around the power supply, but the threat to the iMac itself is always there. I¡¯m following a discussion on Macintouch focused on what mods add the biggest boost to the iMac, and I¡¯ll probably get going once that discussion is over. Thanks again, Jim Robertson |

I am happy to report that the operation was a complete susses. The mew SSD arrived yesterday and I started the task today around 3 PM and finished around 9 PM. To take apart and clean inside and replace the hard drive took about 1hour. To take the screen apart to clean inside and reassemble took about 2 hours. This was a delicate task, not for the fainthearted. The rest of the time was spent copying the clone to the new SSD. Here are my tips for this job. Wear a ground strap and DO NOT use a vacuum to clean the inside, they can produce a ton of static electricity. Use compressed air. Make sure your wife is not watching when you blow the dust all over the house, I learned that one the hard way. And don't force anything just take your time. |
