Re: New A1G "accumulator"
Ah, finally some "traffic" on the A1G list!
It's good to hear that you are trying to complete an "accumulation" of the first generation Atlas cars Edward. I did this about 4 (already THAT many years ago) years ago via eBay.
I wanted them all because Atlas was what I started with in 1967 (Norfolk Southern gondola first purchase) after 5 years of Lone-Star Treble-O-Lectric. I was 15 at the time and was overwhelmed by the refinement compared to the Treble-O stuff.
Now, the relative improvement in realism of the track, cars, locos, etc. are considered rather crude by today's standards, but I still think they are wonderful things.
Early on, on this list, I tried a quiz for members, which was to name the three early packaging variations in the Atlas standard length (5") boxes, but got no takers. Maybe now?
Also, it didn't take long to realize that there was a common European manufacturer of Atlas, Minitrix, and some of AHM's cars..........Roco!
If you have any questions re these cars, please ask!
Regards, Doug
PS, George has done a tremendous job on documenting these cars (except for maybe indicating when the change was made from "bronze" colored wheels to "black" hehe).
PPS, I hope George takes this in the good natured way it is meant.

I have recently began to accumulate some of the old Atlas freight cars, passenger cars and motive power. I figured since many collectors want the M-T cars, I would go for some of the older Atlas stuff I see at every single swap meet I attend, which usually goes for pretty cheap prices.
I would like to find some information on A1G motive power (please email me offlist concerning A1G motive power). I have looked over George Irwin's A1G freight car site and found it a very valuable resource. I have a small but growing group of freight cars. Some in boxes, some not. I have a few locomotives (steam and diesel). I am particularly interested in freight cars and steam power at this time.
I found that accumulating these old Atlas cars is much easier and not as stressful as trying to keep up with the M-T cars. Besides, preserving the heritage on N Scale is something that should be done. Atlas has come a long way, but I actually like the older cars.
I hope I can help some fellow hobbyists find some of these old cars as I am currently on a buying spree, building my "accumulation". I will eventually have some surplus cars. I will list my surplus wares here first, so others who are preserving these cars can fill the holes in their fleet.

The elusive Transfer Caboose
Those of you who have been to the A1G website know that there is one car that is technically missing from the scans is the Transfer Caboose, catalog number 2274. That's because, at the time I completed the A1G website work, I didn't have one.
What's made it difficult to locate one is that the later releases, which have a different window configuration, were also sold under the 2274 catalog number. In addition, the later cars also tended to appear in A1G sets, or at least the ones that have been sold on that famous Internet Trading Community.
Well, I'm pleased to report that I have finally procured one of these elusive little items, and as soon as I can get a scanner that speaks Windows XP I will have it up for ya'll.
Meanwhile, to those of you who were wondering whether this group was still active, yes, technically, it is, but "low volume of messages" would be an understatement.
Cheers, George

Just received the Sept/Oct 2002 issue of N Scale Railroading (or as I call it, "Kirk's Magazine" after its publisher Kirk Reddie).
On the bottom of page 28 in the "Great Shots" section is a photo taken on Paul Machiaverna's layout. Prominently featured is a familiar car: CNJ 89224, an "A1G" gondola in black with white lettering and "Miss Liberty" herald. It was catalog 2403 when released as part of the A1G series. And there are still copies kicking around as part of the Rivarossi/Arnold re-release program.
The only changes to the as-issued car are weathering, a load and Micro-Trains trucks and couplers.
I'd say it holds up pretty well for a more than 30 year old car!
Cheers, George

I just joined the group & wanted to say hello to everyone. I was introduced to Atlas N scale in 1969 by my mother, who had seen train sets at the local hobby shop. As a school age boy, I didn't have room for much of a place to put my trains except the top of my desk, so thanks to my mother, I had found the answer. I mowed lawns & purchased my first Atlas train set for $19.95, it was a C&NW E8, 2 cars, caboose, oval of track, & transformer. And from there was the great beginnings of adventures in N scale. Today, my interests include; 1)Restoring Atlas steam locos & diesel locos back to running order, 2)Collecting old Atlas cars, 3)Collecting old Atlas catalogs, 4)Collecting old Atlas repair manuals, & 5)Sharing any info with other folks that love those Atlas trains. I'd like to hear from some of the members who have an interest in loco repair, I'm working on 2 0-8-0 steam locos at this time & also 3 E8 diesels. Sorry I got so long winded, I was just excited to find this group. Let me hear from some of you. Happy Railroading; Glenn Sanders Ellisville, MS USA

"Premium Services" Again...
It looks like Yahoo is at it again, looking for you to answer a "survey" indicating your choices for a premium (i.e. Pay) service. This is the URL:
The upshot of this is that there will probably be restrictions on what "free" groups will be able to do; i.e. message limits, archive size limits, number of members that can be added limits, etc.
My intent is to shut down this list as soon as payment for it is required. I've already had an offer for another host, but those of you who are on this list and would like to see it continue should start thinking about alternate venues.
I am most concerned about Bill Barr's N Scale list which will clearly be impacted by any new restrictions. It will probably be "belly up to the bar" for that sooner or later.
I can't say I didn't see this coming... and please, let's refrain from business model discussions.

Hi George, I'm sorry if I stepped over a little bit on the subject of The Freight Yard. It's just that these guys have been really good friends to me and I wouldn't want any bad rumours to hurt their bussiness. They do get some A1G cars from time to time as a lot of older Atlas/Kato and Kato engines that are out of production. I do want to go by the rules you set forth here on the A1G yahoogroup. I didn't think that was out of step by speaking of a subject that was railroad related. I guess I've been too much involved in the Atlas N-scale forum as you can speak of anything provided that it's railroad related. I need to remember that this site is for Atlas First Generation cars. While were on the subject of A1G, are their any passenger cars that fall into this group? Once again, I do apollogize for breaking a rule and will keep to only A1G in the future. Folks, reviews of various hobby stores are probably better suited to larger venues on the 'net. I was recently at the Freight Yard and of interest for this group is that they do handle consignments of N Scale, which might occassionally include A1G equipment. I don't recall seeing any but that doesn't mean it wasn't there.

Re: A1G 3000 Series Pulpwood Flat Cars
Rick, Sorry, the intention wasn't to rekindle false rumours. There was a longish thread started by someone some time ago who was complaining about still not having received his locos back after more than six months and also no replies to his enquiries. During the whole discourse there was never any input from anybody to back up the dealer. And let's face it, there's no way I or anybody else will risk mail order dealing with any business after reading something like that about them, irrespective of whether the allegations are true or not. Unless I had personal experience with them that convinced me of the opposite. So it's good to hear another side to the story! Especially in my case - I'm on another continent altogether, with no leverage at all if I should happen to run into a problem such as the one this guy was bitching about. Hi Andre', That rumour about The Freight Yard simply isn't true. I've been going there for a couple of years and also happen to be good friends with the owners of the store. Nothing has ever been sent to the store that never got back to it's owner. There are a lot of N-scale club members and N-scaler themselfs who have commission work for custom runned engines and cars that are very satisfied with the work. Some times they do get backlogged with work but it does get done and returned to it's owner. They can have up to five people working together painting, decaling and custom modifications just to get the work out. Most Saturdays I'll spend most of the day there helping out. These guys are on the up and up and are very honest when dealing in bussiness. I've noticed on the internet especially, that individuals like to spread bad information around coming mostly from people from rival stores trying to bring down their competition. In a situation like that, it's best to let your own eyes, ears and mind make the judgement call, not someone who's degrading a person or bussiness who can't bring forth any factual truth to back his story up. So please don't let someone condem the store without checking it for yourself. But Andre', I can assure you that this is a honest bussiness, check it out for yourself. Rick

Rick, Thanks. In my case, rather let me have an email address - phoning from here is generally not very budget-friendly. The Freightyard? Sorry for the delay, I've been trying to reach my friend Jeff by e-mail about the availability of A1G cars he might have for sale. Apparently, his computer has gotten a virus and he's working on getting the bugger out. I hope to see him this weekend and I'll ask if it's ok with him to post his phone number for anyone who might be interested in calling for some cars. Also, if anyone is interested in any other N-scale items, go to www.thefreightyard.com and checkout the site. This is a store here in Anaheim that specializes in N-scale only. They do custom runs of both engines and freight cars plus they have a section of the store called Dream Design. This is were you can design your own painting and decaling plus most any kind of features you would like on your engine(s). Example EMD SD90 in NYC road scheme with ditch lights and flashing becon. This would be a dream design because NYC never had any SD90's as the company became part of Conrail in the late 60's/early 70's. You can also come up with your own paint scheme and they can design decals if nothing is availabile on the market. This works on freight car runs too. check the site out when you have the chance. John, Thanks for the offer. The cars I'm looking for are the following, as shown on George Irwin's pages at
Catalog # Popup Image Reporting Marks Description AV AM AV MIB 3001 Image N&W 32850 Blue/White 6-8 7-10 3002 Image L&N 225875 Blue/White 6-8 7-10 3003 Image WM 756 Tuscan Red/White 6-8 7-10 3004 Image D&RGW 22846 Black/White 6-8 7-10
I have the Western Maryland one, but I'll even take another one if I can find it and alter the number. For WM it's a fictional car anyway, according to George, but it's still a nice looking car, especially considering its age. Regards, Andr? Kritzinger, Cape Town. Hi Andre', One of the best places for me to find A1G cars are at a model railroad swapmeet (AKA- GATS or private show). I can usually find these at a good, reasonable price without having to go to places like ebay. I have a friend here who part of a N track group (Orange County N-gineers) who buys stuff up and sells at swapmeets plus will sell direct to the customer via mail system. If anyone's interested, just give me a howler and I'll give you his e-mail address. You can contact him on what your looking for in A1G and go from there. You can give him a list of what your looking for and he can contact you if he should run across what your looking for it by chance he doesn't have it on hand.

Re: A1G 3000 Series Pulpwood Flat Cars
Hi Everybody,
This is in response to Andre's post about the 3000 series "60' Bulkhead Log Flat" as Atlas called them. I decided to reply to the list rather than just to him because, as he stated, the list is awfully quiet.
I collected all four of the cars bidding on eBay. I realize that I probably paid too much for some of them but it's only money right? This was about 2 1/2 years ago and I haven't really been looking at eBay too much lately so I don't know what the current situation is on there for these cars right now.
But, I believe eBay is probably your best bet, Andre. Things usually repeatedly show up on there from time to time.
Regards, Doug Gosha

[n_scale] ADMIN: Yahoo plans downtime
Not like this is going to have a big impact, given the current traffic volumes... :-(
The Yahoo! Groups service will be down Friday March 15 9:00 PM PST (GMT-8) as we move our servers to a new facility. We expect the service to be back up the morning of Sunday March 17.
I wouldn't expect "promptly" on the 17th, either...

Well... it was the A1G "piggyback" flat car with two trailers, catalog number 2352. I guess we can declare that un-prototypical... Hey, at least it was a flatcar! That's better than some manufacturers would get. Sooo, you gonna renumber one of them? Which one? ;-) Dennis
