Here's a crossing of two of my interests in N-Scale...
I went to type in the new Micro-Trains ATSF DC flat car into my accumulation database (I got a freebie from MTL for my help with the car-- wish I could remember what I sent them!) only to find that there already <was> an entry for "ATSF 90000".
Anybody know what it was...?
Well... it was the A1G "piggyback" flat car with two trailers, catalog number 2352. I guess we can declare that un-prototypical...

Hi George, Now that's what I call service!!(joking). I just read the e-mail from the A1G member about the first Atlas loco's, went to write an e-mail to a new friend named Jim Cullen who is laid up from having heart surgery last month and was e-mailing him about your UMTRR newsletter you put out each month. Jim has a website of his own about his N-scale version of the Elizabeth & Austin divisions of PRR. ( ). Came back here and you all ready answered the A1G e-mail! (perfect timing!) I don't know if Jim is a member of the UMTRR or A1G group, but if he isn't this could be something good for him to do to keep involved in model railroading to a certain extent while he is cooperating. do loco's count on this page? I have an sd-45 I picked up on an auction. I also have a 2-8-2 steamer I saw run for 10 minutes and quit after my dad bought it new, about '75 or '76. I have about ten old freight cars, I know some of them are early 70's, in bad shap though. I also have a gp-40 shell, i think the cab roof is missing. those were the glory days of "n" wern't they

The next project on A1G, time permitting, will be to pick one of the car series that has the "group picture" and convert it to the larger individual pop-up images.
Any nominations for which one you'd like to see done first?

Well, it's taken... too long... but the two A1G series of cabooses-- or is it cabeese?-- have finally been posted. Ya'll are the first to know; this won't be officially announced until the weekend. So if you'd like to "beta test" have a look!
and then find and select "A1G".
Believe it or not, this wraps up the initial posting of all of the A1G freight cars. I have ambitions to go back and change all of the scans to the "pop-up" variety on the pages I put up earlier in this endeavor, and I also have some interesting "one and a halfth generation" stuff like an unassembled car kit that I'd like to share. But there is that unfortunate gap between ambition and achievement...

Hi everyone, I finally found some A1G cars this past Saturday. 50' double door boxcar, I.C. Rd#41677.... Bulkhead flatcar (with lumber load, S.P. Rd#5373....Composite gondola, N.S.,Rd#7700 (this goes with the other ones I got during the summer, Monon Rd#2020 and Reading Rd#1800) and the last one I think was the best find #5004-129 40'boxcar P.C.,Rd#65420, still in kit form, all parts on spurs still in it's original Atlas box! I'm about to commit a cardinal sin and I hope everyone here at A1G including Mr. Irwin don't get mad at me for what I'm about to do...change over the trucks to knuckle type??!!!(lol) I know at a collectors stand point that these models should be kept in original form but I collect and operate everything I have so these need to be able to couple up with other equipment on my Pacific NorthWestern Railroad layout. So when I do a truck swap on these cars I will do it with Atlas's accumate truck mounted couplers to keep everything Atlas. I do and will store the original trucks away as those are getting hard to find since everyone has changed over to the plastic wheel sets. If and when I find some more A1G cars, I'll post it here and hope to hear of everyone else's findings here at the A1g group. Rick P.S. You can count on me building that P.C. boxcar kit. I used to enjoy building those as a kid and will sure enjoy doing that again!! Also a note to Mr. Irwin, can the first locomotives that were made for Atlas be concidered A1G? (Roco and Rivarossi) And can these be included with our A1G findings if someone should come across some?

Prototype photo of an MHAX Helium Car
Hi Guys, Nobody has written for a while so I thought I'd post this note. I just stumbled upon an excellent photo of a real helium car. I thought you all might be interested to see this picture since it looks very similar to the silver MHAX car in the AIG. I found the photo on George Elwood's great railroad photo site. I will post the URL here, and hope you guys can simply click on it.
I was surprised to see there really is a prototype for this unusual car, even though George Irwin said there was on his site. BTW, George, I am eager for the next installment of your AIG Page. Super job you've done!
Best to all of you, Alan S.

These show up on eBay every now and then. Unfortunately, it seems that previous owners felt compelled to glue the bulkheads to the car. Why? I don't know as they don't exactly fall off.
I have tried to get one version of each of the S.P. and I.C. and almost every one had the bulkheads glued on, and then on the one that didn't, the box it was shipped in somehow opened up and one was missing. So, I haven't had real good luck getting like new examples.

AHM item no.4454 mechanical reefer
Hi, I'm new to this group. The reason why I subscribed is mainly because I have a lot of old AHM/Atlas/Aurora cars on my NScale layout. For many of them there is no prototype information - which I hope to get from this group.
I have several of AHM No.4454 cars, dating from the 60's or maybe 70's. They have outside bracing, with one diagonal brace on each side of the approx. 9' wide plug door. AHM sold them painted&lettered for Thermice, KO&G, REA and NYMX. They don't have express trucks, but normal friction bearing trucks. The item numbers were 4454A,B,C and D. It represents a true mechanical reefer with a diesel engine on one end. The louvers are horizontal, and there is a roofwalk.
To date, I have not found a prototype photo of this car. Does someone know what prototype they have (IF there is one?). The closest match I've found are Santa Fe reefers, but they are longer and do not have this type of a plug door.
Any help appreciated....

Was this a primary use of the prototype? As far as I know the 40 foot double door box cars were general service in the 1960's. In earlier decades they were used as automobile cars, and a number of prototype cars had special racks for that purpose. Also, I got a 2252 NYC Cattle Car and I was wondering (assuming it's based on some kind of real car)why the reporting marks were "NISX"? Just curious! Thanks, The NISX reporting marks were registered to North American Car Company, a major lessor at the time. NISX is what their stock cars were marked. But I wouldn't confuse the NYC car with anything prototypical... --Your moderator

Re: 94' texico tanker.....
Hi Doug, I'm old enough to know that Tex"A"co is supposed to be spelled with an "A" as there is also alot of those stations around here. Apparently,I wasn't paying attention either...lol! It comes with age I guess.....at least that's what my wife keeps telling me! Rick From: dgosha@... Reply-To: a1g@... To: a1g@... Subject: Re: [a1g] 94' texico tanker..... As this thread has to do with paying attention to what one is doing (the upside down lettering), I noticed now that I can be counted among the negligent. I spelled the company name "Texico". Of course, it is "TexAco".

Re: 94' texico tanker.....
Rick, welcome aboard... I hope to see A1G increasing in popularity as well. It's certainly easier to assemble an accumulation of these cars than Micro-Trains cars!
I'm not an expert but I believe that all A1G cars were pad or screen printed and there was no decaling or hand decoration involved. There was just too high of a production run for that to be practical.
There will be a page or two devoted to the A1G (more like the "one and a halfth generation") kits on the A1G site, eventually. My extensive travel schedule has yet to slow down, but it's just a matter of time before I get back to the webmaster gig.
