In the late 1960's and early 1970's, the local Boy Scouts (now just called Scouts --the boy part was removed recently) had a Ham Radio explorer post. The focus was on older scouts age 14-18 , most of whom had gone through the regular boy scout program.? The post was co-ed and had a couple of young women members. Several local hams such as Bob Leo (W7LR), Vern Philips (call ??), Chuck Curtis (call ??), Lee Barrett (K7NM, WA7 Hot Diggety Dog at the time) , John Duncan (call ??) and others met with the explorer post on Wednesday nights at the ERL lab (which has been demolished and replaced by the Conrad Burns building).? The early meetings involved Morse code (5 wpm required for a license) and electronic theory leading to a novice license.? I think we ended up with around 10 high schoolers with a novice license. Time was spent? learning radio operating, building a low power 80m transmitter, antenna building, radio theory on a chalk blackboard, converting old motorola tube taxi radios to 2m, and getting on the weekly 2mm repeater net. (146.76 at the time-eventually moved to 146.88).?
In addition to the ham radio, the post got involved with some drills and searches with Search and Rescue and did alot of camping as a group and operating from the campsites.? One night the post was called out at midnight to stand on several bridges along Bozeman creek all night long with flashlights and long poles with hooks to look for a body when some young woman fell into the flooded creek in the alley behind first security bank. It was pitch black, pouring rain and every stick and log floating under the bridge looked like a body. A long night for a bunch of 17 year olds.? I think the Manhattan volunteer fire department pulled her out of the Gallatin a few days later.? Several of the members of the post went on to get engineering degrees based upon the exposure they had as explorers.? ?Most of the members didn't? go on to general class, but several did and are still licensed.??
I have attached some links to starting an explorer post. It does require 4 adults to start.? I suspect more information would be available at the Scouting office on South 19th.? WA7MKN

Tom,

Thank you for your response and discussion.? I will include a couple links from the ARRL about the grant application process.? I have proposed 2 grant topics that our club members seem to show interest.? 1) Welfare Messaging System and 2) Public outreach(Boyscouts). The links also provide examples for help in writing the proposal. I will definitely need help with answering the questions and writing the proposal so I will welcome the help!

The Welfare Messaging System seems to be gaining ground with many of our club members.? The grant would be for parts, cables, and education materials to set up members in our club with this system and building an education center for hams in the future to be easily adapted/ready in to the system.

As for working with the Scouts, as we help make antennas and radio kits with the scouts it is not just the scout that is listening and learning.? Scouting becomes scouting for the whole family.? So as we do builds and fox hunts(where they can enter the world of the Radio Art hobby) not only will the scout be exposed to radio and STEM but siblings and parents will be as well.?

Hope to see you at the club meeting on July 11!

Along with all these activities - getting kids on the air can really be fun for them.? Let them have a QSO with another ham somewhere in the world will make a lasting impression.? I took CW classes with a retired police officer and he was teaching in a special school.? They had put up antennas and he brought in his radio.? He got the kids on the air and they were hooked.? Just a thought.

As for scouting.? I am not sure that building antennas by itself, does
much to get more
people involved with ham radio.? The scouts would build an antenna, now
what?? They
would need radios, licenses, signals to chase, ...? I think that
reaching out the younger
people is good for the club, the hobby, and the community.? I don't
think that this does
that.? I think that getting scouts (both boy and girl) in the hobby is
good and that fox

doing this because
they can get involved with doing something where they can see how to use

?All, thanks for the input. ?I understand there’s some thought that we are putting the cart before the horse with applying for funds.?

I have a couple additional comments:

-ARRL put out the email, it was not solicited. It appears they have funds they need to disburse, likely to be able to get additional funding next year. ?They need to utilize what they already have. ?This seems like an excellent opportunity to add to the clubs coffers and move forward the topics that have been discussed in meetings.?

- The thought was to plan for the future a bit. Things generally need to be done simultaneously, it doesn’t work well to decide on a project and then search for funding. Projects most often then get stalled or never get off the ground. ?Also, there may not be funds available, the request may be between the disbursement cycles etc.?

- it would be helpful to know who is interested in working with the scouts if supplies are obtained. ?I was envisioning also reaching out upper level scouts- Eagles etc who also be helpful to the Club and perhaps even engage with the younger scouts.?

- It appears there is interest in the welfare messaging system but not a lot of volunteers so far. I think it would be helpful for folks to know what is needed in order to volunteer both in expertise and equipment. Or if there are newbies (me!?). Would/could there be group training sessions to help us get off the ground.?

Thanks all - look forward to continued dialogue and the meeting next week.?

Enjoy the day!

*ARRL Foundation Club Grant Program – Application Deadline Approaching*

Now is the time to gather your club members and start thinking about how
you can improve the future of amateur radio — and we have funding available
to help!

The ARRL Foundation is pleased to announce the return of the Club Grant
Program for 2024. This is an opportunity for clubs to apply for grants up
to $25,000 to fund projects in areas that will motivate and develop active
radio amateurs, with an emphasis given to projects that are of a
“transformational” nature. Consider applying TODAY to support a project or

Can your club create a plan to improve the active amateur radio community
through education and training in, recruiting for, and promotion of amateur
radio? This is for you! The application period is NOW OPEN and runs through

encouraged to apply, even if your club is not an ARRL Affiliated Club or
not a 501(c)(3) organization—all are welcome to apply.

Grant Topic 2: Boyscouts.

Since most of our club members are here on the reflector, we need to discuss before the next meeting (7/11/24) so decisions can be made and voted on during the meeting. In the last several months two topics have been mentioned by club members as to activitities and direction of the club. One being the Welfare Messaging System and two is increasing club membership with community outreach programs (Boyscouts being the most logical beginner step). ?There are at least 3 different club members who have written grants before so I think we could get this done by the soon approaching grant deadline.

Novice and General License Manuals to be used by students.?
10 radio kits for students to learn soldering and assembly skills and for student use when completed.
miscellaneous wire and connectors to create simple antennas for student use.
copies for classroom activites
Financial assistance for student licensing fees.?

This is an example of ideas for community outreach.? I'm sure some of our hams in the club who helped in the past with the boyscouts could help guide us through this process of what the boyscouts need from us hams.? Do they need training?? Do they need help building and use of antennas?? Do they need learning materials?? Do they need hands on seminars?

I will ask Robin(KJ7VVO) to reach out to the main contact in the Gallatin valley for the boyscouts to get a rough estimate of how many scouts would participate in a directional antenna build and how many would be working toward their ham radio merit badge.?

Lets start this discussion this week so decisions can be made at the meeting on July 11th.?

Thank you,
Stacy KK7CJV

Grant Topic 1: Welfare Messaging System.

Since most of our club members are here on the reflector, we need to discuss before the next meeting (7/11/24) so decisions can be made and voted on during the meeting. In the last several months two topics have been mentioned by club members as to activities and direction of the club. One being the Welfare Messaging System and two is increasing club membership with community outreach programs (Boyscouts being the most logical beginner step). ?There are at least 3 different club members who have written grants before so I think we could get this done by the soon approaching grant deadline.

Mark(KU7O) and Eric(KE7NLU) have started the process setting up their individual radio systems to be able to do Welfare Messaging System.? A living document with the 'recipes' needs to be documented for each set-up.? So as new hams come aboard and want to participate in the Welfare Messaging System, the club will have the documents to help each individual with their individual radio system.? I will be asking Mark and Eric to document their individual process with a parts list.

We have Robin(KJ7VVO), Sue(KK7RYG), and Carolynn(KF7YUS) interested in the Welfare Messaging System so far.? If any others are interested in learning and helping with the Welfare Messaging System, please email me your name and what radio you plan to use for the WMS.? A windows PC will be needed as well.

To recap:
Who is interested?
What radio would you plan to use for the Welfare Messaging System?

Again, discussion needs to happen this week-before the club meeting so actions can be voted on at the club meeting to meet the deadline for grant submission.

No signs or the flag were in the trailer when we brought the trailer into town.? Nor were they

there the last time the trailer was used in 2019....so missing for a long time.

Mark,

When you cleaned out the MCU( Mobile Communications Unit) trailer, did you come across a banner or signage for the club?? When Eric and I came to help with the trailer I did not see any.? Did you see any in your travels?

Re: Field Day Contacts

Don
I have already volunteered to do the night shift but would rather be on CW.? I am familiar somewhat with N1MM logger but I will need to get more training on using the various function keys.? I have N1MM logger on my computer and was trying to use it but some major difficulties came up and I optioned to use HAMRS.? Will go back and try to practice N1MM.? Thanks for the information.? It is eye opening.

From the N1MM W7ED Field Day Log:

ARRL Field Day (June) - 2024-06-22 1800Z to 2024-06-23 2100Z - 147 QSO
?
Total Time On 07:33? (453 mins)
----------------------------

I didn't realize we operated so little!? Only 71/2 hours of the 24 we were allowed!

We tried a CDE rotor at FD some years ago. It added complexity to the tower installation

and a 5 or 8 conductor cable and another control box for very little gain in Qs.? Using a tag

line to point the beam is not the problem. To add contacts we need to OPERATE!

W7ED went more than 13 hours with no operator,

hence no contacts (from 0139 Z to 1456 Z).

Hopefully next year we'll have a multi-band dipole or a vertical up for night use....if we can get

anyone to operate then....night time is THE time to learn:? slower, not so hurried or harried.? Great for

learning how to operate in the FD environment (Section abbreviations, classes of operation,?

timing, voicing - SSB)? as well as learning how to use the various

lights (AC/DC), furnace, stove, & batteries in the GHRC trailer.

Perhaps next May & June we can have programs to show folks how to

operate with N1MM, the radio, the trailer and the generator?

Don, if you can get the W7YB QSL cards to me at MSU, I can put them in the Cobleigh ham shack.

Uh, Todd.? I do still some (many) W7ED QSL cards? but....they are the plain Jane ones we used

after Field Day, not the shiny ones with the logo.? ;-(

Don, n7flt

P.S.: if anyone has contact info for W7YB I still have some (30) of their QSL cards from

when we used that call sign.? KE7X? didn't want to do the QSLing so I got stuck with it.
