Haggin Tuesday, 2009
January 18, 2009? At Haggin, we see UP 4978 leading a westbound manifest as it crosses over the ex-WP Sacramento Sub. In the distance, through the underpass, the Sac Sub's American River bridge can be seen. The units are EMD SD70Ms. 2022: Today this has changed. The C Street grade crossing is closed and fenced off, so you'd need to walk in from D Street along the Sacramento Sub to stand here. Both railroads here are Oakland, California to Utah routes. The train is on the original Central Pacific transcontinental line built in the 1860s. It is headed due west. I'm standing next to the Western Pacific line, which runs north-south between Oroville and Stockton. At Oroville, it turns east to the Feather River Canyon. The CP line is shorter, but the grades over Donner Pass are steeper than the WP line through the canyon. On the left, the Sacramento Northern Bikeway uses the old SN interurban bridge, just downstream of the WP bridge, to cross the American River and connect with the bike trail on the north side of the river. Sacramento to San Jose Sunday, December 2021
On 11 December 2021, I took a trip to San Jose and San Francisco via the Amtrak Capitol Corridor from Sacramento to San Jose, VTA light rail in San Jose, Caltrain to San Francisco, SF Muni to Ocean Beach in SF and back, BART to Richmond and Amtrak back home. This is the first part of the trip from Sacramento to San Jose and then VTA to from the Cahill St. station to downtown San Jose, where I had lunch at a fish and chips restaurant my wife and I had found some years ago. More to follow. Mike Tisdale |
Fw: 1952 City of San Francisco Facebook Thread
A friend sent these photos of the City of San Francisco stuck in the snow at Yuba Pass, California 70 years ago.? The train hit a snowslide and stopped and the efforts to rescue the train turned into a tragicomedy of errors.? ?? Here is the story.?? I've seen many black and white photos of the train and the rescue, but these are the first color shots I've seen. 20 years ago, several of us went to Yuba Pass for a day of train watched on the 50th anniversary of the train getting stuck.? It was sunny and traffic was moving fine.? The girls had fun playing in the snow.?? Mike Tisdale -------- Original message -------- From: Paul Lanyi Jr <Cdogh@...> Date: 1/15/22 8:30 AM (GMT-08:00) I noticed Stan and Roger had already acknowledged that post this morning.
But I want to pass along a heads-up to those who perhaps haven't. I may only link to Facebook about once a week now, and miss a lot of good posts. These scans were posted to Steve Passmore's thread. I used to attend some of his slide shows 15+ years ago. These are slides he received and scanned from a person who actually participated in the recovery efforts. These 'color images' surprised most everyone commenting, as they were the first in color they had seen. City of San Francisco snowed in ?Sunday January 13, 1952 |
Butterfield Thursday, early 1990s
Early 90s, Butterfield light rail station, Sacramento, California, Siemens LRV and SP GP9s on the Folsom Turn. When Sacramento's light rail system was first built, Butterfield was the east end of what is now called the Gold Line. The light rail train is at the end of the line as SP's Folsom Turn comes by. In the 30 years or so since I took this. the light rail line has been extended to Folsom and the GP9s were replaced with newer Geeps, GP15-1, GP38-2, GP40-2 and/or GP60 in various combinations and, now, SD70s and SD59MXes, and today is a UP operation. Re: Stockton Tuesday, 2014
Not a play on words or accents, but when Grahame McDonald, Phil Kilburn and I were returning from India and Sri Lanka in February 1980, we caught the 1550 or 1650 Kings Cross? to Leeds HST.? The train was almost as packed as some of the trains we'd ridden in India and Sri Lanka (we got a cab ride on the Kandy-Colombo train as the driver took pity on us being wedged into the coach...people had to take turns breathing, with half the car breathing in as the other half breathed out, it was that crowded) and the guard suggested before leaving that maybe some people might want to catch the following train before we left.?? We pulled out of Kings Cross with people standing wedged in everywhere and headed to our first stop at Peterborough or wherever.?? When the guard made his announcement for the first stop, he ended it with, "....and for those of you standing, ready, steady, go!" The train erupted in laughter. Re: Stockton Tuesday, 2014
As a boy, when I read about the Stockton and Darlington, I thought it ran near me!?? I was also a bit confused about the Sound of Music, how did the Trapp family get from Australia to Switzerland??? Then I found Austria on a map and got that bit, but wondered how Captain von Trapp was a naval commander for a country that didn't have a coastline?? The Nazis wanted a guy who'd run boats on the Danube River???? Eventually I understood about the size of Austro Hungary before 1918, but as a kid, there were some mysteries that took a bit more knowledge to overcome.?? Mike

Del Paso Monday, 2014
10 Jan 2014, northbound BNSF train stopped in Del Paso siding. 4 BNSF GEs and an NS SD60. The WP searchlight signals are still in service here. Del Paso is north of downtown Sacramento, California on the UP Sacramento Sub, the former Western Pacific 2nd Sub. BNSF trains have trackage rights on UP from Stockton to Keddie.?? Mike Tisdale |
Sierra Snow Sunday, 2022
The dogs and I had a day in the snow on Saturday, 8 January 2022.? We followed the eastbound California Zephyr from Colfax to Soda Springs and saw the good layer of snow that recent storms have dropped on the mountains.?? A BNSF eastbound was waiting in Colfax when we got there just before the Zephyr was due.? It soon left and then #6 followed it into and out of town.? As the Zephyr arrived, as westbound UP freight net it. I got photos of the Zephyr rounding Cape Horn and then went up? the mountain.? I considered Blue Canyon, but looking at the condition of the road, I did not want to try it in my car.? I then pulled off at Nyack to try to get trackside at Emigrant Gap, but that was a traffic jam of people trying to park to play in the snow.?? After pausing at the scenic overlook, we eventually saw the train ar Yuba Pass, then beat it to Soda Springs.? I was shooting video of the dogs in the snow when the train showed up and I just kept the cell phone going as I shot stills with the DSLR.?? A quick trip east to the Donner Summit overlook on old US 40 and then it was time to head for home. Mike Tisdale |
Re: SLO Surfliner Saturday, 2019
SLO isn't huge, but it is home to a university and has decent restaurants. It is the midway point on the LA - SF Coast Route and the base of Cuesta, the crossing of the mountains for the railroad and US 101 to the Salinas Valley.??

North of SLO, SR 1 is built along spectacular coastal cliffs, going by Big Sur en route to Monterey.? Most people have seen photos and video of SR 1 as it is often used for movies and ads.? The roads over the mountains to the San Joaquin Valley go through some very remote country.? We have almost 40 million people in California and the SF Bay Area has the population density of the Netherlands,? but there are lots of middle of nowhere places as well. Major roads such as 99 and 101 have people,? but make a left turn off of them and you can soon be in mountains or farmland with few people? Mike
