What do you mean by "alt key inserting itself"???
?
I presume you mean that the alt key is acting like it's been struck when it has not, but this is not at all clear.

Hello, I am the person having the problem with the alt key.

I am using windows 11 with JAWS 2025 and office 365.

Whenever I use Outlook and respond to a message it triggers the problem.? I press alt s to send a message, sometimes the message does not send and I have to press the delete key to remove the s so it is not inserted into the message.? When I press alt s again, the message sends but then? I have the problem with the alt key.? The computer won’t let me do anything else so I have to reboot but when I press alt f4 and select shutdown and then press the enter key, it says alt enter and I have to do a hard reboot.

Today I closed JAWS and using Narrator and with Narrator the problem disappeared so maybe it is A JAWS problem.

I have spoken to the Microsoft accessibility line for support several times with no results.

Since today I switched to Narrator it seems to work.? Also I am also pressing control enter to send messages in Outlook to see if that helps and will not trigger the alt key.? ?

I hope that maybe if it is a JAWS problem and using Narrator it doesn’t happen I hope the problem has been resolved.? This is a new computer which I have had for only two months, thanks, Judy

Yes, I don’t have the same exact issue but alt S does not send emails for me anymore. I have the latest version of the screen reader 2025 and windows but to be honest I’m not sure exactly but I’m pretty sure I’m using Outlook classic. It used to say classic in parentheses but now it doesn’t anymore so I’m not sure if that’s a change with Microsoft, but I don’t know why they didn’t just keep outlook the way it was and has been for years.

It's been discussed here and elsewhere recently, but Microsoft is moving away from using "Outlook (new)" and "Outlook (classic)" as the designations to just "Outlook" and "Outlook (classic)".
?
This makes perfect sense as what has been being called "New Outlook" is not particularly new anymore and will be the one and only Outlook come 2029.? And since Outlook Classic will hang around until that time, too, it's keeping that designation.

Make sure you're looking at the correct shortcuts for New Outlook versus Outlook Classic versus Outlook on the Web.? These are in their own dedicated tabs on that support page.
?
Alt + S is NOT the shortcut for Send Message in New Outlook and never has been.? It's Ctrl + Enter.? ?In Classic Outlook it is Alt + S.

Alt with the letter S makes more sense for sending an email then control with enter. Although both keyboard shortcuts worked in outlook classic, they should just be brought over to the new version of Outlook.

What "makes sense" is not what matters (and I happen to agree with you about what would make sense).? What matters is what works, and is officially documented.
?
What I like, or you like, at any given moment in time is not relevant.? What works, and is documented, is.
?
Folks are going to have to get used to the idea that there are times where things change.? Microsoft has been moving toward a unified User Interface for both the free and paid versions of Outlook for a long time now, and that's what New Outlook over 365 and Outlook for Windows (the free client) achieve.
?
Feedback can be provided to Microsoft via the Windows Feedback Hub or, in the case of either New Outlook or Outlook Classic, the Feedback option in the Help menu, accessed with Alt, E, F.

BTW, I can get send to work with Alt + S, too, provided focus is in the message body at the time. So clearly it is carried over even though it's not documented.? This wouldn't be the first time that's happened.
?
My guess is that if someone's accidentally done a press of alt, and just alt, or hits alt and lets it go before also hitting S, this is where the trouble can begin.? Ctrl + Enter and Alt + S both do a send provided focus is in the message body.? Ctrl + Enter is just less likely to accidentally throw focus elsewhere, so it's more reliable.

Hi Monte, I have had not only the Alt key insert itself, when I absolutely had not pressed it, but also the other Modifier keys.?

?

I have had this happen in Word as well as in Outlook Classic.?

?

The only way I have found to get it back to normal, is to push the Power button and thereby force a shut down.? This is necessary, since just pressing the F4, in hopes that the non-asked for Alt, would cause a proper shut down, does not work in this situation.

?

I think I then find that after repressing the power button and it comes back up again, I make it do a proper Reboot and then things go back to normal.

?

I have never figured out what causes this or any other way to handle it.

?

Someone told me, that this kind of thing is more likely to happen if you are not in the habit of restarting your computer at least once a day and I think this has decreased the likelihood that this will happen.

?

Hope this helps.

Hi Vicky,

What you are describing sounds exactly like what I am experiencing.? I have talked to the people at the Microsoft accessibility line several times, have had my keyboard reinstalled, had my office repaired, outlook repaired as well as other diagnostic tools I can’t remember but am still having the problem.? I also spoke to the people at Vespiro to ask if anyone else using JAWS had a similar problem and up until now, I have been the only one with this problem.? But maybe, the problem has been resolved, since yesterday for the first time, I unloaded JAWS and used Narrator.? With Narrator the problem disappeared so I am convinced it is an issue with JAWS.? Now that I know? that I can reboot if I use Narrator I am feeling much more ?confident that the problem might be resolved.? Thanks to everyone who responded for your help, Judy

Hi Chaltain, That’s a good and reasonable idea, but yes, I did check that and for me, that wasn’t what was causing my problem.

So far, this issue appears to be occurring only for JAWS users.? If JAWS gives you a method to turn on debug logging, and you're having this issue, I would turn it on, and keep it turned on, until the issue occurs and is captured in the logs.? That means that you'll likely need to delete JAWS logs until/unless the issue recurs, but at least you'd have something that was captured that can be supplied to Freedom Scientific Tech Support when it does happen next.
?
I can't remember at the moment how one turns this on/off for JAWS, but there's got to be a way.

I am now using the command: “ control enter” to send a message in Outlook Classic.? I have only used the control enter command to send messages and have not had the problem at all today and before this it was occurring two or three times a day.? I hope the problem has been solved, Judy

Hi Chaltain, That’s a good and reasonable idea, but yes, I did check that and for me, that wasn’t what was causing my problem.

?

I haven’t ever figured out what causes this, perhaps either having too many windows open or having not rebooted often enough, seem to be possible triggers.

?

The only thing I do know, is that by forcing a shut down and then restarting my computer, this strangeness goes away.

Have you made sure sticky and filter keys are turned off in setings?

Hi again Vicky,

I spoke to the tech support at Vispero again this morning and now I am told that there are a handful ?of people experiencing this problem.? I asked how to turn on the debugging log and she told me they don’t do this on a routine basis but she gave me another suggestion.? She said if it happens again, to hit both of the alt keys several times to see if it will fix it.? I did try hitting the alt key the last time it happened but she said you have to hit both of the alt keys, not at the same time but hit both ?of them several times and it is supposed to help.? If it happens again, I will follow these instructions but am passing on this information to see if it works, thanks,? Judy

Hi Judy, I have had this problem show up using the Control+Enter to send messages.? Sometime within the last month or two, I have had to change to the Alt+S to send messages and this extra key appearing that was not pressed has occurred in both situations for me.

?

Very strange and puzzling!

I can attest to this working. This isn’t something that happens just in office products. It happens occasionally for a time at random, ?and then it seems to clear itself up. When it happens to my students, they think I am nuts, but hitting the alt keys a few times in quick succession it seems to work nearly every time. I don’t even think this is a screen reader issue. My searches have yielded others experiencing the problem as well. In fact, one of my searches may be where I found the solution.
