Locked Sticky A group for SERIOUS group owners
This GroupManagersForum is founded in the tradition of the GroupManagersForum ( https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/GroupManagersForum/conversations/messages/2 ) on Yahoo! Groups. Attachments are allowed and the judicious use of screen shots and other illustrations is encouraged. To prevent malicious attachments, avoid spam, off-topic messages, and certain kinds of spoofing, ALL messages sent to GMF are moderated. Despite these measures, be aware that the bad guys are clever so there's no guarantee that we'll always succeed; you are encouraged to be vigilant against any and all threats arriving via email. Your GMF moderators make no guarantees regarding the safety of emails arriving from this or any other Groups.io address. Don't post JUST to advertise your groups. Listing your group in your signature is perfectly acceptable, just make sure there's content in your post. Do post something about being a Groups.io group owner, moderator or member. What suggestions do you have for improving Groups.io? What works for growing your group? When is it a good idea to create an unlisted group? How do you manage the role of owner on multiple groups? How do you manage playing owner on one group and member on others? There is power in numbers. Ask "How to" questions: "How do you do...[function of your choice]?" We all have to learn somewhere Through the contributions of its members this group can become a powerful voice for education, quality, change and improvement in Groups.io -- provided we work and focus on that as our collective goal. -- Shal *HELP:* GMF Wiki - /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Official Help - /helpcenter Search GMF messages - /g/GroupManagersForum/topics Search by hashtag - click on the number of posts - /g/GroupManagersForum/hashtags

Change the " " identifier for this group? 3
I have a filter set in my email so that all messages with?" [GMF] " in the subject line go into a folder for the Yahoo GMF forum. ? But, since this groups.io GroupManagersForum group uses the same" [GMF] " in the subject line of its emails, all of these messages also go into my Yahoo GMF folder. ?I can't think of any other filter that I could use so that all of the groups.io GroupManagersForum group messages will go into their own separate folder. Would it be possible to change the [GMF] for this group to something like ?[GMF2] or ?[GMF-G] or whatever so I could filter all of this groups messages into its own folder apart from the Yahoo GMF folder? Thanks.

A choice of two wikis
In the beta group Frances wrote: Rather than ask Mark to open up Beta's wiki, which he may have reasons not to do, I realized I've got a couple other options. One of them is to clone my YahooGroupedia wiki for use with Groups.io. So that I've done: http://groupsiopedia.pbworks.com/ The other is to start using GMF's wiki, which I've also done: /org/groupsio/GroupManagersForum/wiki I'm more familiar with editing PBworks, and I think it is more feature-rich (e.g. an automatically generated Table of Contents for a lengthy page), so that was my first inclination. But there's no denying the simplicity of having the Wiki access control be implicit in group membership. One difference is that PBworks' wiki is visible to the public, where GMF's is not, and cannot be made so (there's no selection for "Public"). This has its plusses and minuses. For example, a tutorial on how to sign in to a Groups.io group would only be useful in a public wiki. There may be subjects that shouldn't be in a public wiki, but given that GMF has open membership, they probably shouldn't be here either. So at the moment the only advantage to GMF's wiki seems to be the convenience for GMF members (they don't have to obtain a PBworks account to edit the wiki, nor keep a bookmark or something to remember where it is). Probably the most significant advantage of using GMF's wiki is "dogfooding" - that is, the more we use the native resource the better we'll understand it and how to use it in our own groups, and the better we will be able to report bugs and suggest improvements. So my inclination is to eventually remove the Best Practices topic from Groupsiopedia, and reserve that wiki for topics that are more useful if they're in a public wiki. I'll try and remember to provide cross-links between the two when I do that. Opinions? -- Shal

removing accounts on groups.io 2
Hi. Just out of curiosity a friend, asked me the other day, how does some one remove their account from groups.io. Is there an easy process. Looked on the site, and I do not know the answer. So, if say for example, a friend, signed up to groups,io, then for one reason or another, did want to remove their account. What's the steps they would have to do this. Can this person do this as an individual. Thanks.

Top update priorities? 2
I think we each have updates that we'd like to see implemented on this site. I'm not sure how Mark is setting priority for the suggestions he's received. I'd guess a cross between urgency and ease of implementation. I do check the Trello board regularly to see what's in the hopper. My current highest rated item would be a database function. What's yours? There are definitely areas where I'd like to see tweaks, such as file size shown for Photos. I'm very glad to see that he's not throwing a bunch of stuff out all at once. He makes a change, then tries to make sure that the bugs a squished before moving on to another item. Duane

creating grops query
Hi. If I create a group, and maybe can recommend other mods. To help me out. As did have some yahoo groups a few years ago, one, I was the only owner, and was overwhelmed. Then got shut down, could not keep up. So my question is: Can you recommend any good, reliable people, who I could trust to be co-moderators, or co-owners. And if I get owner or admin rights, does it just only apply to that group, or the entire groups.io site. And what's happens, if some one decides to create a group, and accidentally picks a group, which has a current name. What happens? Does it give you an error, saying you cannot use that group name? Just curious. So. Any ideas or suggestions.

Other tips? Thanks, Duane

questions about transferring a yahoo group to groups.io 9
Hi Shai, Nice to see you over on this end.:-) I'm on the verge of transferring my yahoo group over here. I've already created the group and I've discovered the email to [email protected], etc. I have a couple of questions: 1. After an automatic transfer, does the old yahoo group stay in existence, with all its members? Or does it disappear, or does anything happen to it? I'd like to maintain the old group until everything is sorted out. 2. ?Does groups.io have a search function for searching through posts? 3. It seems like the automatic transfer automatically creates an account for everyone, but requires them to create a password "the first time they sign in." What if they don't sign in? My group has many members who access the group exclusively through email. My understanding is that they will automatically start receiving, and be able to send, email to the new (automatically transferred) groups.io group without having to sign in. Is that correct? Thanks! Intro 4
Hi Shal and all - I figured I should join this group on 'the other side' as you referred to it. I'd like to see how the experiments go here. I'm not having much luck getting members to test the groups I've set up so far. I'm a little concerned with the news coming out about Yahoo's future. I have a couple groups over there with extensive archives, and I think IO is in pretty good shape for what we really need. It would be nice to have the links, but if we can bring over the message archives through the transfer process, that would be the most critical. One think I hadn't thought of previously is the space available for messages. One group goes back to the days of onelist back in 1998. I'd hate to lose some of the archives because we exceeded storage space immediately. I can't find the space the message archives currently take up om Yahoo, but we've just passed 8500 messages. That's enough noise for for now. Thanks! Dano

Hashtag Question 3
I have a question about hashtags that was not addressed in the groups.io FAQ. Is it possible to make it so that only moderators can populate the names of the available hashtags, i.e. users/members can only use a hashtag that has already been made available by the moderators or they have to ask a moderator to make a new hashtag? I would like to limit the number of hashtags to a manageable and easily identifiable group of available hashtags. ?One of my concerns is that if users can make up their own hashtags there will be literally hundreds of misspelled, unintelligible, or just plain useless hashtags cluttering up an otherwise very valuable tool; ?at some point having an overabundance of hashtags will make hashtags more of an annoyance than the useful tool that it promises to be. Bringing the Moderation Question In here. 2
Okay Shal, I copied over parts of the post from Beta to here, so we can continue the discussion on Moderation and how it works both in Yahoo and in groups.io. Owl wrote:>>Hmmm. Help me understand this? In MM, everyone who joined was allowed in without approval, but stayed on moderation until cleared to post. Default for the group, I thought, was moderated?<< Shal wrote:>>The group control for message moderation in Yahoo Groups is slightly different from that in Groups.io, so bear with me.Your MM Yahoo Group is set to "Messages from new members require approval." In a Groups.io group this would be the equivalent of leaving the "Moderated" checkbox unchecked, and checking the "New Users Moderated" box.<< Okay, John and I checked out MM's actual settings, and here is how it is set up. It is set up as New Users are Moderated. Problem is, there's nothing ever to indicate that they are ever UNMODERATED by the system. Therefore to me, that seems like New Users Are Moderated = Moderated group. Because that is the default, and the default doesn't decide to unmoderate anyone, only I do. I found one entry that was put on default in the entire list, (might check again), and I'm pretty sure I didn't do that, because I always unmoderated the user once they posted a legit post...with the exceptions of those that I kept on permanent moderation. So please help me understand how the default in there could still be unmoderated, when nothing unmoderated them but me??? Shal wrote:>>So no, the default in MM is that members' posts are generally not moderated. However, when a member joins their Posting Privilege is set to "Override - posts are moderated". Thus new members are moderated until you change that setting.<< That's the other weird thing. Even when I changed the setting it was still override. It then said Override - Posts aren't moderated. Again though, default wouldn't have made them unmoderated, because default didn't know how to define a new user or not. Wouldn't default have to have been unmoderated to start with to do that? Owls are SO confused! Shal wrote:>>You might have cleared them to post either be selecting "Default Group Policy" (which I recommend) or by selecting "Override - posts are not moderated" (which I generally recommend against).<< But that was the only way I knew to do it, because default policy said new members are moderated, and didn't show me a way to make it aware when someone was no longer new. And no one ever told me differently, about how it worked. Shal wrote:>>In your Yahoo Group, if you clear members to post by changing their Posting Privilege to "Default Group Policy" then they are unmoderated so long as the group's setting is either "Unmoderated" or "Moderated for new members" (which implicitly means unmoderated for "cleared" members).<< Once again though, how would the group know they were no longer new, or cleared? Shal wrote:>>This very confusion is one reason why I dislike Yahoo Groups' use of a single three-way radio button control for both the group's default policy and the initial setting of new members. In Groups.io those are separate checkboxes, which I feel is much clearer.<< Owl wrote:>>Sorry, but that REALLY confused me...if you'd rather answer me in MMSanctuary, feel free...<< Shal wrote:>>I thought about it, but confusion on this point is not uncommon among Yahoo Groups moderators (at least judging by the questions I've fielded in the moderator help groups). So I figured that since many of beta@'s members are migrating from Yahoo Groups, it might be worthwhile to highlight how Groups.io's controls are clearer for this purpose than Yahoo Groups'.<< Okay, that makes sense. Shal wrote:>>And also to highlight why one should always prefer "Default Group Policy" over the unmoderated override: it allows you to temporarily switch the group's policy to moderated to squelch a flame war. If some members are instead set to the unmoderated override then you have to squelch each of those members individually - a much more arduous task in a large active group. If you want to discuss this further, perhaps we should take it over to the groups.io GMF.<< Done. I'm here. Help me understand it, because I simply don't. Sorry. :( Brenda

thoughts on transferring links formerly posted in yahoo groups
I've copied most of my group's important files over to Groups.io, and am about to embark on the arduous process of getting the links duplicated over here as well. (I actually like the fact that Groups.io doesn't have a separate place for "links," since content will not be randomly distributed among "files" and "links" as it is in yahoo.) What I'm tentatively planning to do is to create file folders with appropriate names. Within each folder, I would include the files themseives plus a separate file called "links" with all the links to content of the same description. Example: In the "diagnosis" folder I would have a bunch of actual files on diagnosis, plus one called "diagnosis links" which would just be a file listing all the links. Any thoughts on this, or other ideas? What are people planning to do? J

Muting Hashtags Question 2
Okay, I received an invitation to Shalstest. I was able to join that group with no problems. Then I received mail from Shalstest, including calendar reminders. Since I have enough mail coming in already from groups.io, and elsewhere, I decided to attempt to mute them by using "Mute Threads Tagged With #cal-reminder" link in the e-mail. I copied the link and went to the group, NOT SIGNED IN, to see what would happen. Here is what transpired: 1. It It asked me for my user name and password 2. I typed them in the boxes provided 3. Then I clicked mute 4. No confirmation was given, instead it threw me back to the groups.io home page and I was not logged in. 5. Checking to be sure, I logged in, but I couldn't figure out how to list my muted hashtags to see if it worked. So I don't know if it did. What did I do wrong, or is this an issue? Thanks, Brenda

Once all done I have hit Send at the bottom of the posting box.? Sadly and I waited a couple hours in between in case there a slight delay from IO to redo the it a second time.? Import database tables from Y!Groups 3
In beta@ Jim Poston wrote: /g/beta/message/5784 I've decided to expand upon this topic here, as it is more of a "how to". If we come up with bug reports or feature requests those should be posted back in the thread at beta@ so Mark will see them. One thing I noticed when moving some databases from a Y!group to its reincarnation as group@ is that the Exported CSV (probably TSV too) from the Y!Group includes a header row containing the column names. Here I'm using the trailing @ to signify a group on Groups.io, my apologies in advance to anyone who had the temerity to name their group "group". When importing to the group@ that column heading row is matched up to the column names in the group@ table - so you need to have columns that match the names of those in the Y!group. Columns in the CSV that don't match any columns in the group@ table are discarded during import. I found it useful to open the CSV in a text editor to copy/paste the column names into the Edit Table form at group@ so that I'd get them to match exactly. The column type in a group@ table seems to control how both the add row and the import functions treat the content for that column. But my only test so far was a column of type "Date" - which imported as gibberish when fed a CSV containing dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format. On the other hand, importing that column as "Single Line Text", and then changing the type to "Date" after completing the import did not turn them to gibberish. But I don't think it turned them to an internal Date representation either: I think the table just shows the text that it imported despite the subsequent change of field type. -- Shal

From: Ro People are not resisting the idea of an OPTION -- people are ensuring that the folks who make decisions realize that it (whatever IT is) needs to BE an option - not merely a change - and (especially in the case of your earlier suggestion) that it needs to be a stand-alone option, not tied to some 'similar' setting. Many of us have learned the simple truth that software designers look for the easiest way to implement ANYTHING - which generally means changing existing functions rather than adding more options. And that when faced with a small minority clamoring for some specific change, those same software designers will often implement the change with zero regard for the SILENT majority who were perfectly happy the way things were. Unfortunately it is almost always impossible to roll back a bad change, because the decision to roll back a bad change requires management to admit that they made a bad decision. Many of us are here because of the repetitive cycle of BAD CHANGES at Yahoo.

Wiki Database page 3 #howtoguide
I just added a page to the Wiki for "Setting up a Database". I think I covered most of it, but please make changes if appropriate. I'm thinking that we could do a lot of the documentation for Mark on how things work. I know that things are changing, some quite often, and that can make it difficult for less computer comfortable folks to keep up. As far as I'm concerned, Mark is more than welcome to use any of the information that I post if it will help others. If/when Shal feels that a page is pretty much set, he can lock it so that "Only moderators can edit this page" if he chooses so that there's less chance of it being messed up. Duane

Creating a How-To Guide for groups.io 21 #howtoguide
Per Duane's & Vickie's posts in Beta: For info on this topic, see post #s #5878 (near the bottom), #5886, #5890, and #5891 &#5892 which is bringing the topic to over here in GMFio. In here, the topic was discussed in post #'s #209, #254 (I found my missing post) & #255. Maybe those could be merged into this thread, or if not, maybe the thread could be hashtagged to match the one I made here. Anyway, let's use this thread for discussing creating the #HowToGuide, if everyone's okay with that. :) Brenda

Hello I am new here..... 2
...... and not very IT savvy, I need some help please I run a group for my rural village, we have been using yahoo groups but it has limitations; furthermore, a lot of members are not sophisticated IT users, they will read an emailed daily digest but may not want to navigate the groups home page We use the group more for "announcements" than for "conversations" so a daily digest works for most members. However it is unlikely that they will make much use of the home page, I would like them to see the following in the daily digest and wonder if it can be done? Yahoo allows me to put a footer on the daily digest, I use it for forthcoming events and edit it from time to time. I can see a calendar function here but no "footer". Is there a way of putting a footer into the daily digest? Similarly, I would like to add a village business directory in the daily digest, or at the very least a one click link to the database Similarly I would like photos and other file attachments to be visible in the daily digest, or a one click link Is any of this possible? Thank you Jeremy Freedman

Using IP addresses to identify malcontent members 4
In beta@ message 6229: Brenda wrote: /g/beta/message/6229 IP addresses have two shortcomings: the same person may use multiple IP addresses, and multiple people may use the same IP address.[1] The first can come about from the person connecting using different computers (home, work, library), or with a mobile device using different WiFi locations (Starbucks, grocery store, library, home, work). It is also possible, in most cases, for a person with a home internet connection to break that connection and be assigned a different IP address. That used to be very common with dial-up connections, but now connections (and their IP address) tend to last longer (weeks, months) and ISPs often try to give you the same one back after a disconnection, rather than drawing a fresh number from the pool. The second can come about when multiple users are behind the same router/NAT. This can be as small as a home network, or larger such a dormitory, an office, a campus, or in some parts of the world even a whole city. So using an IP address for identification isn't foolproof. But, as long as you're aware of the limitations, it isn't necessarily worthless either if you can combine it with other forms of evidence. Shal 1: At least, for the IPv4 addresses that have been most used to date (usually written as a string of four small numbers combined with decimal points). In the future, as IPv6 gains usage it isn't clear to me what will happen. Instead of somewhat less than 4 billion unique addresses, the new system has something on the order of 16 quintillion (billion billion) unique addresses (speaking in U.S. terminology, where billion = 1,000,000,000). In IPv6 every computing device could be given a permanent unique address and we wouldn't even come close to running out.

Help with Easy Group Transfer
In Y!GMF message 58371 Dean wrote: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/GroupManagersForum/conversations/messages/58371 (public archive, no membership needed) Do you happen to know if they're asking because they were too timid to just try it? Or did they run into some kind of snag? I made a Wiki page on the subject, but I haven't actually transferred a group myself. So the advice there is gleaned from what I've read. If you have more advice, or detailed descriptions, or screen shots along the way, perhaps we can collaborate on improving the page. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups Shal

case sensitivity of Group+SubGroup names on digest subject line
RichardTE wrote (6525 in beta@): /g/beta/message/6525 Interesting observation. And I think that provides the answer. I created a subgroup, /g/shalstest+camelCaseSubGroup and put you in it to receive the digest. Then posted a messsage. I'm predicting that the intercapitals will be preserved, but initial caps will be imposed in the digest Subject, as in: Shalstest+CamelCaseSubGroup Digest #1 That's based on the appearance of the breadcrumb line in the subgroup (viewing the Messages Thread View): Shalstest+CamelCaseSubGroup > Threads Shal /g/GroupManagersForum

Closing threads 4
Just looking through old posts and I had a question or two about threads ? It looks like threads don't automatically close. ?This must mean someone can add to an old thread a year or two later. ?Correct? If I don't want that, I must manually close them. ?Right? Perhaps a dumb question but I assume that subject lines from closed threads can be reused later. For example, if the subject is Malta, can someone else later start a new thread with the subject Malta?? Frances

group title vs. group email address, effects of changing both? 4
Hi all, I would like to get rid of the underscores in the title and email address of my main group (the title and email address are currently the same, and I'd like to keep it that way). I remember that in Y!G, even changing a couple of letters from lower to uppercase caused some upheaval in members' abilities to receive and send emails. What are the ramifications of changing a group title and/or email address here? Removing the underscores is not a huge deal, but I'd prefer to get rid of them. Thanks. J
