Should bouncing messages result in deletion of member from group?
I am posing this question here to make sure I understand how this is supposed to work. ?We recently had an instance in which a member was (temporarily) in bounce status. ?This resulted in her name being removed from the member list by Groups.io (there was no action taken on our part to remove her). ?Since this is the first time I have noticed this happening, could someone please clarify if this is the way it is supposed to work. ?If it isn't then I'll report this as a bug. I just ran into this about a week ago. The member no longer shows on the Member page, but they're not removed from the group. They now only show up on the Bouncing page. Having them unbounce themselves will return them to the Members page. You may need to send a Bounce probe. This is different than it used to be where they were still on the Member page, but had a B next to their email address. I find it a bit confusing, but not really a problem since I now understand how it works.

That sounds similar to pending members, except that pending members are not counted in the overall member count. If bounced members are removed from the regular members list, it stands to reason that they should also be removed from the count, and this seems wrong. So, are bouncing members also removed from the member count? Either way, I'd call it a flaw: if they're removed from the member count, that's wrong because they're still members of the group. If they're not removed from the member count, that's wrong because they're removed from the members list. I think there are some confusing inconsistencies now:
I think this should be reported to Mark. I don't have any bouncing ?members now so I can't check it out for myself. J |
J,
I don't have any bouncing members now so I can't check it out forAs it happens I do, in both my test and PTA groups. So the below are some observations based on those groups. So, are bouncing members also removed from the member count? They are not removed from the Home page count (it reports the total of bouncing and non-bouncing). So too the count in the list of Public Groups and the members' profile list. They are (of course) removed from the counter at the top right of the Members list itself. If they're not removed from the member count, that's wrong becauseAs I recall, whether or not to include bouncing members in the total (home page and other) membership count has been a contended question over the years in Yahoo! Groups. Some have felt that including the deadwood (bouncing members) in the group's home page and directory listing misrepresented the group's actual reach, as compared to other groups. Said another way, it penalized groups whose management actively manage and trim their bouncing list versus groups whose management lets them accumulate. In this regard another question arises with respect to members with "NC" status (I have some of them too). Like "Bounced" members they do not receive group messages, but there is not a separate list for them, they are shown on the main Members list. They also are included in the home page (and directory) total membership. Bouncing members are now viewed separately and not part of the overallAn argument could be made that they should be excluded from the main list because they are not receiving group messages, and that there should be somewhere a way to see that specific information (a count of members eligible to receive group messages - "in good standing", so to speak). I need to go research the actual distinction between "Bouncing" (blue B) and "Bounced" (red B), my memory of the exact details has faded. I know that Bounced members are no longer sent messages, whereas the Bouncing members are still provisional in some sense. I think this should be reported to Mark. Not very high on my list of things that need attention. I don't think I see anything here that I would classify as a bug, but there are inconsistencies and maybe those merit suggestions on beta. Shal |

Never said or implied it was a bug or high on the priorities. I think there are some abnormalities (weirdnesses? inconsistencies? ambiguities? confusion?) in the way this is being done. That's all. And as such, I think it should be mentioned to him. ?members with "NC" status ... are shown on the main Members list. They also are included in the home page (and directory) total membership. Are you sure about that? I'm almost certain they're not counted, which seems correct since they're not technically (or any other way) members of the group yet. I was unaware of the former Yahoo controversy. J |
J,
Never said or implied it was a bug or high on the priorities.Sorry, I didn't mean my comment to be contentious. Just an opinion and an observation, in case you were suggesting that someone (me) with bouncing members should report it to Mark. I could have worded that better. Are you sure about that?Yup. My test group has only 26 in the Members list, including two NC, plus one in the Bouncing list -- the group's home page says "27 Members". A manual count of the Members list says that list total is right (as expected). Shal |

I was suggesting that *someone* mention this to him as an issue, as trivial as it may be. It seems to be causing ocnfusion and the change seems to have been recent. I'm sure I've never seen an NC member in my group's members list, but maybe there's a difference with restricted groups? J |
J,
I'm sure I've never seen an NC member in my group's members list, butIf you'd like to examine these first-hand without messing around in a "real" group you're welcome to join my test group. I don't see a connection to the group's membership being restricted or not. My test group is currently not Restricted, but it might have been earlier. You could switch it back and forth to see if you can create new NC entries under each condition. Shal |
J,
?Thanks. I already have a test group that I've been using; I just don't Sure: " - I created a new page to unconfirm your account, if you wish. It's at ? /unconfirm and it's not linked to anywhere on the site." Mark /g/beta/message/7190 If you don't need to actually confirm the address it might be easier to just log out of Groups.io (or open a browser without an active login) and enter a nonsense email address (use @ example.com or otherwise be certain that it couldn't accidently belong to someone). I think that is what I did to create at least one of the NC members in my test group (I used my company's domain, where I knew the fake email address did not exist). That should work, unless Mark has since then implemented countermeasures against bounced confirmation emails. Shal |
This is potentially a new sub-topic of this bouncing members thread. I have three concerns/questions listed below. I have three very small groups that I use as project focus groups for an organization I belong to. A member just forwarded a notification message she just received today that her address was bouncing and she would be removed from [list of groups] if she did not unbounce her account. She is an ultra-conscientious security minded person and does NOT click on links without making sure they are valid. So, first I went to my management area and looked at the members' list. I could not see her listed anywhere. I couldn't spot another tab it might be under; there was no marking anywhere. Checked the other two lists, same thing. So, I went back to her forwarded message and clicked the link to UNBOUNCE to see what happened. Voila. I got a message that "my address" was now unbounced. When I clicked on my groups, it brought up the list of the member's lists with me logged in as her!? I finally had to log out and log back in as me. When I checked the admin for my groups, she was back on all groups.
I do most of my emailing from either my email client Outlook or from Gmail. I don't like having to use the web interface to keep track of things.? Would appreciate any sage advice! Anita C |
Linda
Hi Anita, When you are on the Members list page, click on the down arrow at the right of the Members button at the top of the list.? Select Bouncing and the list below will switch to bouncing members only.? Bouncing members (B) in Blue are still being probed by the system.? When the B is Red, the system has given up trying. If you want to see the bounce history, click on a bouncing member's email address, then click on the Email Delivery History button. Hope that helps, |

Anita,
?So, first I went to my management area and looked at the members' list. I see Linda has already pointed you to the location of the Bouncing list. ?So, I went back to her forwarded message and clicked the link to Heh. Yes, never forward those kinds of links from Groups.io, and never follow them if forwarded to you. Many include an auto-login so that you can use the web page they take you to. ?Is there a place to configure admin notifications so that I can be As far as I know, your only place to notice is in the Member Activity Log. But adding that notification is a good idea for the long-awaited "Notification Overhaul". /g/beta/message/2708 ?I do most of my emailing from either my email client Outlook or from Myself likewise. Hi Lena!
What exactly was the Subject of that notification?I'm not entirely sure, but I think the message was plain text; the link appeared as a bare URL in the forward I received and I don't think my mod would have made that change on her own. Here's a sanitized example: -----Original Message----- From: Groups.io <noreply @ groups.io> To: name <user @ example.com> Sent: Wed, Aug 17, 2016 1:15 pm Subject: Your Groups.io Account Is Bouncing Hello, Recently, emails sent to you have bounced back to us. This can be for many reasons, including: - We have an incorrect email address for you. - Your account was or is full. - Other temporary delivery issues. We have suspended email delivery to you. This means you will no longer receive messages from the groups you are subscribed to, including: - Example - Example+board - Example+exec-board - Example+teachers - Example+staff You must take action to restore your account, or we will unsubscribe you from all of the groups you are a member of. To unbounce your account, go to the following link: https :// groups.io / unbounce ?email=user @ example.com&cookie=[many decimal digits] Thank you, The Groups.io Team ----- Spaces inserted in emails and URLs to protect the guilty.
