Combining imported Yahoo groups
#transfer
Cody, Helenmary
I am new here and just starting to get the hang of groups.io. I think this is the right place for my question, but please redirect me if not!
I am looking to import several small groups from Yahoo to groups.io. I am in the midst of importing the first group, CRFCRC_Board, with all of its members, messages, documents, etc. Once that is done, would it be possible to import just the messages from a second group, CRFCRC_Board_Committees, essentially combining the histories of the two groups? Or will the import function only work once per new groups.io group? I could set up two groups again, but it really would simplify things if they could just be combined. Thanks for your help! |

Yes, the procedure is called Merging.? Check the Wiki entry at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Merge-Threads, then we can give additional advice, if needed.

Re: Mysterious Email Problem
Shal,
I've contacted support at Groups.io about this, and I'm just waiting for a response. I also contacted my ISP today, and they don't think it is their problem...but they didn't seem very knowledgeable. I may try again with the ISP, hoping I get someone that knows more. WBennett I am able to stay current on our member postings, by logging into my group and reading the messages, so it's not a huge problem in one respect. I prefer using my email program Outlook, but I can work with checking into my group too.?At first I thought the problem was with my ISP (cox.com), but now I wondering if the problem is Groups.io.? Combining Topics? Subject line hell!
#question
Simple question: Is there an easy way (or any way, really) to combine topics that are really replies to an original topic, but get separated for a variety of reasons? Here is an example. Roger posts a topic, but also cross-posts to a list-serv, which shows up in a reply subject line, starting a new topic. Another fellow, Richard replies, but his ISP has tagged the post as ADV (advertising, I assume), so his reply becomes another new topic, although it isn't. And to compound things, Roger decides to post yet another reply, but adds a 'suffix' to his subject line, starting a fourth new topic. Any way to crunch them back into the original thread?
Thanks, Bart |

See?attached Table.jpg and Table2.jpgIt looks to me as if you have somehow set the other six columns in the table (the ones containing the actual data) for fixed-width display. The ID and Updated columns thus automatically expand to fill available space in the browser window. I suspect that removing the forced carriage returns in the data, along with some additional fiddling with the column data types, should make this table display a lot better. Someone with more experience with databases than yours truly will have to provide more explicit instructions. Hope this helps, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |

Bruce, See?attached Table.jpg and Table2.jpg Refer to my note at the top of the former regarding clicking the blue 'ID' at the bottom of the screen. In the online message editor, click on the paperclip icon in the menu bar to attach the resulting file to a message.?If sending by email, use whatever your email client uses to attach something. Also, I've discovered that by clicking on the blue button at the bottom of the columns, the ID field collapses to very small, but it only appears in that viewing mode, and cannot be saved in that state. I input all the data in the fields during the past 3 days myself, so there is no padding. Dan |

Re: How many invitations to join can be sent all at once? Any way to place messages in chronological order?
When I moved my groups from yahoo, one of them had close to 400 members.? I divided my listed into approximate thirds, and posted those for invites to be sent.? It actually took very little time, and I was notified after each batch was sent.? I would then post the second batch.? It took total a bit over a day, mainly because I didn't rush back to see when groups.io was ready for the next batch to be posted.? I think you could easily do it, possibly all at once, but in two sections.

Would an email alias work for him, allowing him to post from either his Gmail or Cox addresses? See this recent thread:

Can anyone here tell me whether we can we invite that many to join the new group, or will we have to do it a few at a time?? Yesterday I sent invites via the group to 19 beta testers and Groups.io didn't bounce any of them, so it looks like we're good to go for at least that many.? I think I'll try 50 at a time and see what happens unless someone here has more info. In porting over hundreds of discussions (messages) from the BigTent group we found that Groups.io would not allow us to post more than 20 at a time and then required 20 minutes without posting any before it would allow us to start again--almost certainly a spam-blocking mechanism.? Our tech guru wrote a short program to make that happen, so copying over the messages went smooth as silk.? Only problem is that they are now in random order.? It would be nice to be able to put them in chronological order but we have not figured out how to do that--no big deal. Any info on any of the above would be?welcomed! Many thanks, Milt Baker P.S. The group's first beta testers are beginning to report in and they like the functionality of Groups.io. |

Now, as for Cox, what an awful ISP. My heart goes out to those who use them. I ran the analyzer routine that someone posted and sure enough, the error message points to Cox as delaying the emails. And they do not allow whitelisting, so that's a dead end. If this problem gets resolved on their end, I'd be surprised. Their CS representative was not at all helpful to my member, either. Re: Hiding File Folders
Hi
A workaround that you could use (I do). Password the file itself. For example I have a PDF and a .xls spreadsheet in my Files. Create your documents, password them. Create a folder (the folder will not be hidden) and upload your passworded files. Use a cryptic name if you wish! ? Works for me. You can give someone the password if you wish. Say, a moderator.? Until there is is something better, especially if it isn¡¯t a document you need to use frequently.?
