Good suggestion, thanks all.

Re: Deleting photo storage

Bruce,

The link and the thumbnail no longer match up, and the reason is
browser caching. ...
Forcing a browser refresh from the server side would also work, ...
And something like that happened, the first time I tried to test the symptom. After confirming the delete I was taken back to the album page, and the URLs were updated to account for the deletion. I had made note of the URL of a particular photo beforehand so that I could see the change.

But on my second attempt to observe this I opened a photo to be deleted in a new tab. On this trial when that tab was returned to the album page the URLs had not been updated. Nor had they been in the original tab, still showing the album. I had expected the one in the new tab to have been updated, just like the first test, but that didn't happen.

Arguing over which is wrong (the thumbnail or the link) is just
semantics.
If it looks like a bug, swims like a bug, and quacks like a bug then it probably is a bug. (My apologies to ducks everywhere).

Specifically, I don't think the system is operating as intended in that case. It is certainly a violation of the principle of least astonishment.

but other requests here in GMF have asked for static [or should I say,
"more-static"] photo album URLs for entirely different reasons.
True. Here's an even stronger reason - it causes a malfunction by the site.

And no, I don't classify this as just "a browser cache issue" - in my second test the site loaded a page (the album) which had incorrect links in it. Whether or not the browser is complicit in that error does not IMO make it any less a bug in terms of user experience.

In a worst-case scenario a less attentive moderator than Win might go on to delete the wrong photo, possibly a prized one.

True. If such a request were made I would give it a bump. How practical it would be to implement is Mark's problem.

councilconsultingdba,

Thanks... however that's very disappointing.- I really don't want so
much information off the bat, and have it sound so automated and
impersonal.
You can use formatting in your inclusion to help guide the member's eye to your message and away from the boilerplate. See this example for an Invitation, you should be able to do something similar:
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/16053

Can we request this change for a future update?
As Bruce mentioned, beta is the official suggestion box for Groups.io (no one from Groups.io reads GMF). The prior topic Bruce cited is locked though, so you'd need to make your own new topic and optionally cite the (very) old one.

Re: Deleting photo storage

Bruce,

This is not actually a bug in groups.io, but occurs because your
browser has cached the previous album view.
I'd say this is a bug that can and should be fixed. So I'm CCing this to support.

The symptom reported in GMF is that after a deletion, clicking on a thumbnail in the album brings up the wrong photo (specifically the next photo in the album). It results from the photo URLs being just an index into the album. It could be cured by having the URLs based on something that isn't affected by deletions.

This could be like the IDs of a database (unique per table). Or Message numbers (unique per group). Or Topic numbers (unique site-wide). Whatever the case, an invariant URL for each photo could also be presented as a permalink to the photo.

FWIW I don't consistently reproduce the symptom in Firefox: at least once (the first time) when I was returned to the album page after confirming the delete the URLs were already updated. Not so on a subsequent test, maybe because that time I used Ctrl+Shift+Tab to open the photo to be deleted in a separate tab.

Yes, but not here. You would need to post this request to .

It's been requested before:??. You can add a comment on that existing thread, or start your own.

Hope this helps,

Re: Deleting photo storage

Linda,

I already had it set the way you said...does that mean I don't have to
worry about deleting files, it will do it automatically when we're at
our limit?
That's my understanding, though I haven't proven it in any of my groups.

Some have reported that there's also a certain amount of "padding" (or maybe it is just timing) - the group can at least temporarily exceed its limit before the system gets around to trimming older attachments.

I was afraid we would reach our limit and something bad would happen.
The other choice in that control is "Bounce Messages" - which is probably the bad thing you didn't want. Few groups would, which is the reason this option was created.

If this does it automatically, do I need to worry about that?
You shouldn't. If it turns out that some problem occurs that's probably something to report as a bug (system not working as intended).

The appeal of direct add was to create a smooth and transparent experience for users on the migration.

Fran -- I seem to have confirmed the above hypothesis.

I first set up a recurring (daily) event at noon with a reminder at 11 AM, and waited two days to be sure it was working properly. Then I added a second reminder at 11:30. This second #cal-reminder is not happening, despite the fact that groups.io popped up a dialog box to ask whether the addition would apply to all of the recurring events.

I will be reporting this to support as a bug.?

Creating a Member Notice of type Direct Add affects only the section of text inserted after "The Group moderators have included the following important message:".??

There is currently no way to override or eliminate the boilerplate that groups.io provides.?

Unfortunately, refreshing the page after each deletion (and waiting for the page to reload) is probably the best way to remedy it. You could temporarily disable your cache entirely but that would just slow things down even more.

Re: Deleting photo storage

Thanks to everyone who helped!

Shal, I found Message Policies. I'm curious, I already had it set the way you said...does that mean I don't have to worry about deleting files, it will do it automatically when we're at our limit? This was the whole reason I was going to start deleting. I was afraid we would reach our limit and something bad would happen. Our group's whole purpose is sharing graphics and such. If this does it automatically, do I need to worry about that?

One by one, I'm afraid. I don't think anything has come of various
requests for a bulk way to handle them.

I think those can be kept under control by selecting "Delete Old
Attachments" in the "Out of Space" control in the Message Policies
section of your group's Settings page.

Of course, that will affect file attachments as well as photos.

Override default "Direct Add" notice

I am setting up a new group using groups.io for the first time.? I am transferring subscribers using Direct Add.? ?I wrote a custom Direct Add notice.

However when I test direct add, my test user gets the DEFAULT direct add message, followed by the custom message.

I tried to disable the original Direct Add notifice and create a new custom Direct Add notice.? This behaved just the same.

Where is the default message and how can I change it?? This is a non-tech savvy private group of friends? and I don't want such a formal notice, and don't want to confuse them with the website yet as they've all been doing this by email for years.

Adding a custom message at the end of a long-winded default message only makes it longer and more confusing.? ?HELP.

Thanks
Jenny

Re: how to undo accidental merge

Marina, I've been able to split out a message in the middle of a topic using just those same steps that Brian mentioned.

Granted the Merge portion of the sequence is a bit less than intuitive but it starts making more sense after you've practiced doing it a few times. Don't worry, you'll figure it out!

Marina,

? ? ? ? ? I have never worked with forums software (and that's the side we're talking about here) that has an UNDO function.? ?But what I do work with routinely is software that allows you to split a single message or selected group of messages out of a topic from anywhere in that topic other than the first message [in which case you just split off messages 2 through the end].

? ? ? ? ? I am almost positive that this ability has been asked for on the beta group in the past.? It might make sense to bring it up again.? That or send the request to [email protected].

Another question about deleting photos.. ?I¡¯ve just deleted close to 100 and found that each time I opened a photo to delete it, the NEXT one opened instead, and I have to click the white Back arrow to get to the correct one. It is bad enough to have to do them one at a time, but having to click again to get the right one, is a real pain.

Any way to stop this and have the right photo open up straight away?

I really detest those Incredimail animations which get saved !!

Calendar - notification of cancellations

Carmel Palanos

Hello all,

I am setting up our group's calendar for the coming school year. I have been setting up the dates without notifying the group, as I have several classes to enter and don't want to be spamming everyone - I will just send out one notice so that people go look at at the calendar when it's all organized.?

In order to enter classes that repeat throughout the year (every Friday, for example), I have just given it the date range (for example, Aug 30 2019 through April 15 2020). However, in order to account for holidays during that period, I then have to go back through the calendar and cancel the dates that classes won't occur due to holidays (eg, Dec 20 2019, Dec 27 2019).

BUT - when I do this, the cancellation notice gets sent out to the entire group, causing mass confusion and panic! How can I do these cancellations without notifying the group? I can't seem to find a setting that allows this.

Any help would be appreciated, whether it's for cancelling without general notification, or a way to set up the year's worth of dates by picking and choosing at date entry.

I've been searching all over and can't find an answer to my question....how do I delete all of the photos that have been stored in the photos section? They're ones that get uploaded automatically from members' emails sent to the group. I have well over 11,000 of them and I do NOT want to have to go through them one by one to delete.

Thanks for any help!!

Thank you, Brian.
Unfortunately, the process is a bit tortuous. I have tried to follow your auggestions but it ended up in a mess :-(( (my fault not yours)
The easiest thing, I guess, is to delete the wrongly merged message and ask the sender to send it again.
I wish there were an "undo action" tab in Groups.io, though.

Have a nice day,
