I am a subscriber on another list where meetings etc. are regularly noted in the calendar.
I'm NOT a manager of that list. I don't want those messages; I live too far away from the "HQ"
I have muted #cal-notice and #cal-reminder on that list, but the messages keep coming.
Why, and what can I do about it as a subscriber? As per now, they are considered junk in my mail client...

I created ShalsTest simply for my own edification. Same as you, I wanted a "playground" where I could try arbitrary things without affecting members of a "real" group.

I've accepted others into ShalsTest who share that common motive. Mostly for their convenience, but also because sometimes I learn from their experiments. As Brian said, no content there is "sacred". If an experiment destroys the content, or even the whole group, no real harm done. If necessary, I'll just create ShalsTest2.

When I first decided to create a group on groups.io in order to get rid of a group on yahoo, I simply created a private one and experimented with the things I knew I wanted to do─invite members, approve messages and so on.? Eventually I will simply delete the group when it has no further use (pretty well now!).? However reading messages to this group makes me realise there is a whole lot more we can do with groups here, so I read and learn.? For example I didn't know about Test Groups.? I still don't know what the difference is.

For myself, I like having membership in a group where multiple testers, all of whom are a "of a serious and dedicated nature" are doing things that I can see when they're being done.? It teaches me certain things that I might never otherwise know.

There are pluses and minuses to having one's own private test group or asking to join existing multi-user ones.? Neither situation is ideal.? A good example of where one's own group would be less than idea would be playing with split and merge functions.? It's tedious to create topics lengthy enough to make it worthwhile, yet a number of these generally crop up on test groups as the result of other testing.? ?Everyone knows that "nothing is sacred" on these groups and, provided you're not interfering with what you know to be someone else's test(s) in progress, you can feel free to play with all the stale material to your heart's content.

I am trying to upload a paper to my group that I wrote on my machine.
io says it detects a virus. It absolutely DOES NOT!!

Looks like your report was heard (assuming you reported it):

"It appears there was a mistake in today's update of the anti-virus
scanner that we use, clamav. It was incorrectly marking a lot of files
as having a virus. Others have seen the same. I've disabled that
particular virus signature for now."

BUGFIX: For groups requiring hashtags, posting on the website didn't
display an error when you tried to post without a hashtag.
SYSADMIN: Replaced all webserver instances to fix a kernel issue.

Brian,

About all you can do is send your information to [email protected] to see if they can figure out what happened.? I'd want to be 100% sure there really wasn't a virus inserted by a program on my computer before complaining though.? Maybe try testing the file at one of the online virus sites.

Contact [email protected]?with a copy of the file attached, if possible [I can't remember whether those get stripped when going to the support address], or including a link to same in the message.

You should also run that file through virustotal.com to see which scanning engines are saying it has a virus.? I have no idea what scanner Groups.io uses, but you'll probably have a much better idea of which scanner might be the culprit if only one or a handful return a false positive while the rest declare the file clean.? You could then mention those results in your support e-mail message as well.

A test group doesn't use any more system resources than a subgroup, but it does lock in a group name, keeping it from being used by someone else. If you decide to create one, for ethical reasons I suggest you name your test group something that no one is likely to want to use.

My own test group is named "bowmanfamily." I created it in hopes that I could coerce my family members into using it for communications and chit-chat. When that fell through, it devolved into a test group -- for lack of a better purpose.

Shal has a group called ShalsTest that several people use. All subscribers are Moderators with most privileges, including modifying group settings. However, this also means that notifications get sent to other subscribers, showing them what you're up to. I generally use my own test group anymore, mainly because I use it a lot, and don't want the associated notifications to become an annoyance.

Generally speaking, it's easy enough to do, but I don't think it's necessary that everyone do it.

I've got a second test running in my own test group.

My hypothesis is that if you edit a repeating event to later add a notification, the new notification does not repeat.

It will take several more days to confirm whether that's what is actually happening.?

Yes, you can use the split function.

If memory serves, this does not allow you to split out a single message in one step (and I do not recall Mark having changed it).? That is unless the message happens to be the last one in the topic.

The way I remember doing this when playing with it was to get to the message I want to isolate, then split the topic there (giving the split topic a temporary name).? Then I went into the temporary topic, which should have the message you wish to isolate first, and splitting it at what will be it's second message, assigning it a new temporary name, which leaves the single message isolated as its own topic.

Then I merge that single message topic into the one where it belongs.? Then I merge the "orphan end" of the original topic back in to the original topic.? If you are a member of the shalstest group or any other testing group, or create a testing topic in your own group, you can work out the exact logistics of the split part.? The merge part simply involves choosing merge for the topic you wish to merge into something, then go to that something and choose merge into.? It's the split bit that's slightly tricky.
