Although composed on this Group it should not be seen as exclusive to it, and you are thus free to copy and paste it into your own Group's wiki. As an option you can put a link to it in a message, but that can be forgotten about all to easily by those reading it; a wiki entry is there forever! (As far as I can see there is no way of making a wiki entry simply a link to the GMF wiki.) The subject is complex and you will go mad trying to explain it to members on an ad hoc basis; far better to provide them with the Guidance right from the outset. On the remote chance that you might find parts of it useful for your own purposes, it's appended in its entirely below. Regards, Bruce Many ISPs and email services have implemented a "feedback loop" intended to reduce spam for their users. When you mark a message as spam in one of these services, it automatically sends back an unsubscribe request. Some provider's spam filters will mark messages and send this request without your knowledge or intervention.?Unfortunately, groups.io and similar services must comply or risk having ALL of their messages blocked by that provider. What does this mean to you? If you mark a message from [GROUPNAME] as spam, or leave a legitimate group message in your spam/junk folder for too long, your email provider could send us an unsubscribe request, forcing Groups.io to unsubscribe you from this group. A work-around has been created to send another message with a hyperlink that will immediately resubscribe you; click on that link with 3 days and you'll be reinstated. The problem is, if that message also lands in your spam folder and you don't notice it, you remain unsubscribed. More detailed information on this can be found at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam How can you remedy this? The best way is to "whitelist" the groups.io domain (or [email protected] specifically) so that all [GROUPNAME] email is kept in your inbox. Or you may be able to set up a message filter to achieve the same objective. Another option is to change your message delivery option in the?[GROUPNAME]?group. If you're receiving individual emails and they're getting sent to spam, you might have better luck with the plain-digest mode or a daily message summary. In the unlikely event that a spammer does slip by the?[GROUPNAME]?vetting process and sends something to your inbox, PLEASE let the group owners deal with it. Reporting any group message as spam can get the entire groups.io domain blacklisted. It has happened before. Seriously. Just don't do it. Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?
So far the only Groups.io messages that my Apple Mail application has put in its JUNK folder are some of the "Welcome to <group>@Groups.io" messages that came when I transferred groups from YahooGroups that had more than 3 of my email addresses subscribed.
What is the need or reasoning behind "Automatic Unsubscribe"? Is there a need??? What is it? Why the punishment of "Automatic Unsubscribe" for: a) members failing to check SPAM or JUNK folder before deleting b) members purposely or accidentally marking a Groups.io message as SPAM or JUNK Is this an attempt of Groups.io to boost its reputation as 'not a SPAM vehicle'? If so, might it backfire on Groups.io by making it seem unreliable for members to stay subscribed... One of my Hotmail addresses gets dozens of real SPAM messages most every day. I do check and pull out legitimate messages before clearing it out at least 3 times a day. I do know people who say they get 100s of SPAM messages every day, and we're all using Apple's Mail application... I do tell them they should check (and check more frequently), but they say they don't have time for that... |

From the famous prevention is worth a pound of cure department, those with Gmail email accounts can do this to prevent Groups.io messsages from going into spam. Since I have a corporate Gmail account, the implementation of this could but probably does not vary in direct Gmail accounts.

Re: Problem with the way Groups.io sends group messages
Chris,
I am used to Yahoo Groups and emails from this system don't have sayI don't know what you are seeing in Thunderbird, more exactly I don't know how you can avoid seeing the poster's email address in the From column (if you stretch it wide enough) or in the From line when you open a message from a Y!Group. Maybe you have your Group email addresses as contacts, and you have checked the box "Always prefer display name over message header" in each of their contact forms. Then the From would show the same thing for every post from that group (not very useful, IMO). ---- One of the problems here is that various email interfaces handle the From information in various ways. For example Thunderbird also has an option to "Show only display name for people in my address book". But even turning that on would show you the poster's email address. Here's what I see in Thunderbird, with neither of those options checked: Shal Farley shalf@... [yahoo_group_of_groups] <yahoo_group_of_groups@...> That differs from the actual From field (shown in the Message source) only be the removal of the quotation marks that delimit the display name part of the From address. From: "Shal Farley shalf@... [yahoo_group_of_groups]" <yahoo_group_of_groups@...> ----- So it is perilous for you to judge what other Yahoo Groups users may think is normal according to what you see in a single example user interface. Re: Is there a full email history?
Dan,
I had recalled seeing the "Email History" tab so went there hoping toAbsent the member's use of Mute, or Following Only, it is safe to assume that Groups.io had attempted delivery of every message. Those that were unsuccessful would (eventually) show up in the Bounces list (they may not list there until all retries have been exhausted). This seemed odd to me, as the title of the tab I was looking at isI agree with that, but I wonder if it wasn't done for the "most recents" because managing a list of them would add overhead to each and every outbound email message. That's a lot of messages! Having only the most recent reduces that overhead to just storing a pointer to the result in a known location. I'm not saying that's the actual reason, but it wouldn't surprise me. On the other hand, given all the other processing that occurs for each and every outbound message, maybe the list management wouldn't amount to a noticeable burden. Bruce,
If was possible to force people into the Directory and nothing isPlease no. The Directory does not and I think should not ever show member email addresses. As you pointed out, for that there is the Members list. That does leave the open question of what should be displayed if the member has not populated any of their profile fields (or has emptied them). The joined date would remain; the All Posts By link and the Email button could still work. In the past few days our group has been getting messages like the following from groups.io: You'd need to ask the subscriber whether it was him or his ISP who "marked" something as spam... and if it was the subscriber, who he reported it to. Spam is UNSOLICITED bulk email. The email from the groups we own/moderate is SOLICITED by the fact that people need to subscribe to get it. They don't have to like every message they receive, but none of it should be reported to their ISPs as spam. Subscribers should let the Owner/Moderator deal with spammers who slip by the vetting process because subscribers' spam reports to their own ISPs can have much wider reaching, unexpected, and serious consequences for the groups we manage. Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?
Hi Tim, This has been kicked around on here many times. This is a problem with the member's email service. All members of Groups.io need to check their Spam Folders before they are emptied and any messages from Groups.io must be moved to the inbox or other folder. You are the first that I know of to have a gmail account removed for this reason. Yahoo is terrible for this. OTOH, I don't understand why anyone would empty their Spam Folders without checking them. I always find legitimate messages in my Yahoo Spam. Like most things Yahoo, this is a less than well programmed system. The following is the message I send to my members who are removed and please note that I have a premium group so I can add members, you may have to invite them back: ================================================================= Hi, Your membership in [email protected] was deleted because you deleted a message from Groups.io as Spam. Please note that putting the message(s) in the Spam Folder may have been done by your email service provider, not by you. There are a few providers who seem to be more prone to putting Groups.io messages in spam. You should have an email from MonGenes with instructions on how to rejoin with no approval required. This email is good for 3 days. If you have deleted this email or can¡¯t find it (Check your Spam folder) or the 3 days have expired, I will add you back to the group. If you do not wish to continue as a member of the group, please respond to this message and ask that I not add you back. To Prevent this from happening again, Do Not empty your Spam Folder without checking to see if there are emails from MonGenes. If you delete a MonGenes Email as Spam, your membership in MonGenes Groups IO will be terminated. This is due to some Email Provider policies that require this action. If this happens, Please Move any MonGenes emails from the Spam folder to your Inbox before deleting. For detailed information on this subject: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam Please feel free to contact me concerning this, Paul Berndt, Co-Owner of MonGenes ================================================================
