Activity Log #permissions

Carla Nelson

I am hoping to hear view of the activity log can be restricted to owners and mods? Or is that how it works already?

My activity log contains a lot of housekeeping admin. Plus it seems like a privacy breach to show how often someone edited, or to put time stamps on all their visits if it is visible to all. Thanks.

No, it's really "how to access members list with members pending". ;>)

Hi Carla.

Profiles are hierarchical structure. At the top you have your Groups.io account profile and then under that you have a profile for each group you subscribe to. If a group also has subgroups that you subscribe to, then you get a profile for those too. As subgroups cannot contain other subgroups this means that you have a maximum of three levels. If you change details in your account profile, they are copied to your group and subgroup profiles unless you have already changed those details in the lower levels. If you just change details in your group profile, they will just show there and any subgroups below that (details are not propagated to higher levels). Using GMF, Beta, a couple of the Beta subgroups and a placeholder for your own group, the following diagram may help:

If you edit your group or subgroup profiles you will see a button at the bottom of the page which says 'Reset Group Profile'. The will remove any changes at that level and copy down details from the level above.

Hope that helps.

Regards
Andy

Hummm?

Even when I try to search for a known member on that screen the system shows no one.
See screen-snip. It's as if from Administration all I can see is that one pending member (not even showing in the screen-snip.? Again... the behavior is very different in my other forum. Sheesh!

Re: How to moderate (override group setting) and individual member? Should be easy.... but....

You have to select Members from the pull-down menu (where it says Pending Approval) in order to get the full member list. When you have a pending member the default for the member list is always the list of pending members and you need to change the view in order to see the whole list, just as you need to select Bouncing from the menu to see those members who are bouncing.

1. In the left navigation menu on the group¡¯s website, select Admin?> Members. The Members page appears.
2. Locate the member¡¯s row and click in it to display their individual membership page.
3. Scroll down to the Posting Privileges panel.
4. Select the level of moderation you want to apply to this member:

And, though I can see the? member I want to moderate if I go to the Member Directory, members' settings can't be changed from there.

P.S., When I do this procedure (same clicks) in a /*different*/ group I'm also an owner of I /*am*/ able to see and access the whole membership list.

I think you must be looking at Directory, not in Admin, Members.
See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/6114
Or perhaps you are not logged in as owner. On the top left, beside Home, does it say owner?

Just re-read your post. You say "Pending member". Do you mean people who have applied to join your group? That's not how you deal with pending members.
See instead?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/handling-pending-members?single=true
You need to pull down the members menu to see pending members.
The instructions you posted in your original post we dealing with existing members, not pending members.

First, this is for one member at a time only. And really, I don't recommend this procedure. (Although it does work. I just did it:
In Members in Admin (not directory), find the member. You can use the search box at the top of the list of names. Click on the name (don't use the tick box.) Then scroll down. Be sure to save after you have made the change.

As I say, this would be an unusual change, I think. The Help page you quoted says?
"You can change the message posting privileges for individual members without changing the settings for the entire group. Example: A member is not following the group¡¯s guidelines for posting, so you want to moderate their posts for a while."
You might take a look at?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-group-settings/spam-control-and-moderation-settings?single=true
?
Or perhaps you want to promote the person to owner or moderator? There is another way to do that.
I am not sure whether you have set a default sub setting (second tab in Admin, Settings). That can be changed by individual users / members for their own account. And it doesn't change people who are already members of your group.

I didn't address this directly. Direct adding (or adding a member in any way) creates a Groups.io account if they don't already have one. And your new members do have an account since you added them..

It is important for them to use Log In, not Sign Up.
/
/login
And they can use the Email me a link function. It is important that they log in with the email address that you have in your group Members lists (in Admin).

I suggest that if you haven't done so, you check out?/helpcenter/gettingstarted

Yes, members of your group have an account with Groups.io
Their email address is their account ID.

They won't have a password. However they don't need one.?They need not go to your group homepage if they don't wish to. Many people participate happily without the need to do so.

If they wish to go to your group homepage, they can click on Email me a link to log in.?
See this GMF wiki page -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/8901
They can set a password or not.

Help exists already -?/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts
Especially -?/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts/logging-in-to-your-account

You might want to create a non-owner/moderator account (i.e. with another email address) and join your group. Then you can see what members see.

Does every member added automatically have a groups.io Account?

Many of our members in a group recently migrated from yahoo into a new group I moderate at groups.io never had "profiles" (accounts) at yahoo.
That was a PITA when they wanted to change email addresses, etc.

The members of my new group were all by direct ADDING.
I'd like to know if when I added them they each automatically get a groups.io account (which would allow them to go on the site and for example, set themselves to Digest Mode, etc) or if they'd have to create accounts? And if create, short directions to them for doing so?

Offhand, I'm guessing they'd have to proactively create an account because an account requires they have a password, and in doing a direct add we certainly don't assign passwords.

Go to?/account?page=viewprofile?to see (and edit) all the profiles associated with your account.

Yes. See the "grey box" notice at the top of the page previously cited. However, you also have to share the profile with others before it will be seen.

In another venue where I post a lot, all messages are HTML and all capable URLS display a ¡°link preview¡± pulled from the meta data at the target site. Sample image below from an Amazon page. It¡¯s lovely ro preview content and context before you click.

My question is whether your platform here (in any mode) is equipped with link previews too? I am guessing not, but thought I should confirm, thanks.

Re: Direct Add to subgroup

Can you please clarify?

I thought the original post was from an owner of a basic group who wanted to add a non-group member to a subgroup without the invitation process.?

Does this workaround only apply to premium groups where direct add is available?

The Help says:
Once someone is a member of the parent group, they can subscribe directly to the subgroup (if permitted), they can be added directly to the subgroup, or they can ask to join the subgroup (if it is restricted).

Frances

PS I wish those seeking solutions would give a bit more detail about their group status! Basic, basic legacy enabled, premium, enterprise.
