Re: GIO changes from Mark

Jim,

Is it too late to move a group from Yahoo?
That depends on how much "prep" work you've done.

It is too late to use the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer method, and it is too late to use PG Offline or similar tools to download the Yahoo Group content. You still have until Jan 31st to request a Get My Data download from Yahoo.

If you already have a PG Offline download you're in pretty good shape with regard to Files and Photos. If you already have a Get My Data download you're in great shape with regard to Messages.

See this wiki page for more details:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io

I have a group and want to load stuff in two sub-groups but they will
be reference only but both are over 1GB but will be for history and
research only.
Note that the increase was only for groups on a Premium plan. Basic (free) groups still have a 1 GB limit.

Since the space has increased, will sub-goups space used be
accumulated into the parent group?
I believe that the original intent was that the storage limit would apply to the sum of the storage in the primary and its subgroups. That hasn't been the case though, and each subgroup has been counting against its own limit. So the answer going forward is murky: I think of the current situation as a "bug" that's bound to get fixed one day.

Peter,

Any chance someone could pass this note onto Mark Fletcher?
Yes - you can!

Email to [email protected] and try to include as much detail as you can about the system where you don't see the Actions menu. Device type, iOS version, browser name and version. Plus anything else you can think of that might be relevant.

GMF is a user-to-user forum, so none of us have an inside path.

Re: Group with same name

Lin,

>>> How is it possible for two groups to have identical names bar one dropping 'group' ?
Technically, 99% NO and 1% YES.

First, by "group name" I take it you mean "email address prefix" really (which is what Groups.io uses for top-level group uniqueness), and not "group title"; the group title can be the same as anything else.? For example, I can create a top-level group, [email protected], and title it " My XYZ group", and you create another top-level group, [email protected], and you can also title it "My XYZ group" .? Groups,io uses the combination of the group email address and the title in the group directory, so in this example one would see "XYZ / My XYZ group" and "ABC / My XYZ group" if they were to search for "XYZ" in the group directory.

So the 99% part of NO means, when one creates a group at the top-level (not a subgroup), the name (email address prefix) they choose has to be unique against all other top-level groups, aliases, etc., no way around this.? The group creation screen will tell you if you used an existing name/email address prefix; if I try to name my group ABC and [email protected] already exists, I will have to choose something else.

The 1% YES means that you can indeed create a subgroup with the same name/email address prefix as a top-level group, or any other subgroup for that matter, as long as that subgroup's name is not already in your own top-level group as a subgroup (i.e. all your group's subgroups have to have different names / email address prefixes between them ala the top-level restriction mentioned above)? The reason this is allowed is because Groups.io incorporates the subgroup name with the main/top-level email address, so it is now unique.? For example, using the above, example:
Top-level [email protected] and [email protected], XYZ group can create a subgroup named "ABC", because the resultant group name (full email address) becomes [email protected] and the URL is now XYZ.groups.io/g/ABC, which are different than the top-level [email protected] and groups.io/g/ABC.

Christos

iOS Screen on Browser

Hello,
Any chance someone could pass this note onto Mark Fletcher?

i noticed while doing a little cleanup in the bounced members section that you cannot access the ¡°Action menu at the bottom of the screen. Not a big deal since I have access by computer but thought I¡¯d pass it on.?

Thanks,

If you contact support and you find they can't help you, do you have
the complete membership list with emails?

If you do, you can create a new group and invite all of the members to
it, explaining what happened. You will lose your messages and files
but have a new group. Pick a name similar to the old one.

But hopefully support can help you.

Re: Some messages not displaying fully

Thanks, Haudy,
?
The Missing Messages all downloaded correctly via PGO,?
they all display correctly in Chrome,
and they are all visible correctly during Editing of the message containing them.
?
But none of that means they don¡¯t contain bugs :-)
?
What I¡¯ve done is delete all the Emailed Digests, and instead I¡¯ve Pasted them directly into Web Messages. It¡¯s a very similar process of course, but slightly easier, and after a bit I could do two a minute.

When I¡¯ve got the site working, I¡¯ll go back and check how they display.

There were known issues between Yahoo Neo and (at least some) HTML emails where the message bodies were not visible in the web interface. (Unless you used the view message source option). I have seen it in cases where the sending email client only added basic mail formatting tags.
?
There were additional issues over the last few days the Yahoo Neo web interface was up, where sometimes messages would load fully and sometimes they would be blank, as the server was throwing intermittent errors.
?
Depending on how PGO was extracting messages from Yahoo (if it was taking the HTML version), and depending on what errors Yahoo was throwing when PGO was running, I would expect some of the symptoms you are seeing.
?
Recommendation: use the Yahoo Get My Data (GMD) request process. It will give you the message archive in MBOX format. This should also avoid the scenarios I listed above, and it will give you files you can view in Mozilla Thunderbird or Sylpheed or other email programs that support importing from MBOX. I have also read that has (or is working on) a GMD import option for premium groups.
?
Note: there is also the possibility that something isn't working right with itself, but I expect the other scenarios to be more likely.

The majority of messages display just fine, but about a third only display the top part of the content; occasionally only one or two of the 50 Yahoo messages.

Re: Group Addresses in Footer not showing as mailto links in emails

John,

But the ones in the middle which I can change from "post" down to
"help" do not even though they seem to show as blue in this response
from my cut and paste.
The text entry box for Message Footer addins in Settings page is plain text. Apparently Groups.io auto-linkifies http(s): URLs when the footer is inserted into a formatted email message, but does not do so with mailto: URLs.

The email interface of the member receiving the message may also play a role in this. Gmail's web interface, for example, auto-linkified the email address (showing "mailto:" as plain text). When that same message was seen in Thunderbird (via IMAP from Gmail) it did not linkify the email address of the mailto: URL.

# First , I noticed somewhere that groupsio does now offer an option for paid groups to import archives from MBOX files. So that basically raises my MAIN question is is it easier or better to (A) try importing the archives from the MBOX files or (B) the PG downloader files.
Can you educate me on the pros ?cons of method A vs B??
Alex -- You have three options, only two of which are currently available:

1. Lena's Perl script. This is free, and you can do it right now. The main downside is it requires quite a lot of savvy on your part to get it set up, and the posting dates are not retained. You also cannot reattach any attachments, if that's important to you.

2. The groups.io mbox import service. This retains both message ownership and proper posting dates, but not attachments. You will have to pay for Premium Yearly on the destination group ($220) to get them to do it. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/27438

3. PGO2GIO software. Rumor has it that this will reattach your message attachments, but like Lena's script, suffers from being unable to reconstruct the message "ownership" or posting date. It costs $50 (minimum), but at this point remains in beta testing, with no clear release date.

More information at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io#Uploading-a-message-archive?ff.

# I was a bit confused when I got the downloaded-from-yahoo zip.
i looked in there and there's AFAIK no way to tell which files were from which of the five groups that were in there.
The group names are at the end of each folder name within the large zip file. Locate the "IG" folder in your download and extract it. Within that extracted folder should be a "messages.zip" file containing all the mbox files. It's up to you to find the right ones and ensure they are operated on.

mbox files can be opened in Notepad or any other plain-text editor, but there will be a lot of header information and html, which confuses some people. If you want to read it as emails, you can open it as a mail folder in Thunderbird with the importexporttools add-on, in Apple Mail, and probably some other email clients, too.

As for importing, if you use Lena's Perl script, I suggest you practice on a subgroup first. That way you can just delete the subgroup and repeat until you get it working to your satisfaction. If you use groups.io's service, just make darn sure you tell Mark exactly which [sub]group is your intended destination, and provide the correct "messages.zip" file.

Bruce

Re: Using GIFs as Cover Photos

Tommy,

There's no real downside as such, other than an animated GIF being somewhat larger than a static (single-frame) GIF. Whether an animated GIF plays is entirely a function of the player (so the web browser for instance); most players that don't support the animation will just show the first frame. On that basis, if the cover picture isn't intended to convey information per se you're covered (pun intentional!). If it does - for instance it has a logo - just make sure that at least the first frame in the GIF is an 'information' frame.

Most (all?) modern browsers have supported GIF animation for some time. There are arguably better formats for animations, such as APNG, but they're less widely supported at the moment.
