Re: Moving to Groups.io (without the Easy Yahoo Group transfer mechanism) #howtoguide

Hi Jonathan.
Thanks for your reply.
You wrote, regarding the inbox files in the zip that came from Yahoo,...
"...Look at the full name of the folders inside the zip file....."

I¡¯ll take a look thanks.

I imagine that means that if/when I or groupsIO uses those MBOX files to Import the Archive into one of my newly created groupsIO groups I WILL be Able to specify exactly which inbox files to use an import from. Right?

BTW.... is there any way, our utility, for me to go directly into those inbox files and see the archives read them or search them or whatever?

Re: Comcast problems again?

In this region the cable provider was Time-Warner (now Spectrum), not Comcast. Due to ridiculous restrictions (4MB Inbox max, whitelisting, etc.) everyone I know who had TWC has switched to Gmail.

It's not as painful as it seems if you set up mail forwarding, so all your correspondents' mail to Comcast is forwarded to your new address until you get them straightened around.

Try this Google search
comcast.net email forwarding

Unfortunately, part of the job of being a group owner/moderator is being a computer tutor for those less skilled.

Re: Group with same name

There is also the possibility of lookalike characters (homoglyphs) being present. This is especially the case when you look at all the possibilities in the full Unicode character set (if Unicode names are supported).

Re: Some messages not displaying fully

A few possibilities:

There were known issues between Yahoo Neo and (at least some) HTML emails where the message bodies were not visible in the web interface. (Unless you used the view message source option). I have seen it in cases where the sending email client only added basic mail formatting tags.

There were additional issues over the last few days the Yahoo Neo web interface was up, where sometimes messages would load fully and sometimes they would be blank, as the server was throwing intermittent errors.

Depending on how PGO was extracting messages from Yahoo (if it was taking the HTML version), and depending on what errors Yahoo was throwing when PGO was running, I would expect some of the symptoms you are seeing.

Recommendation: use the Yahoo Get My Data (GMD) request process. It will give you the message archive in MBOX format. This should also avoid the scenarios I listed above, and it will give you files you can view in Mozilla Thunderbird or Sylpheed or other email programs that support importing from MBOX. I have also read that has (or is working on) a GMD import option for premium groups.

Note: there is also the possibility that something isn't working right with itself, but I expect the other scenarios to be more likely.

Help! (please)

I am transferring a Yahoo Group¡¯s messages over to ?by the rough and ready expedient of posting PGO Digests one at a time as new Messages.?

Each Digest contains 50 Yahoo messages in HTML, and their sizes range from 200kb to 800kb, viz long, but uncomplicated and not ever so big.

The majority of messages display just fine, but about a third only display the top part of the content; occasionally only one or two of the 50 Yahoo messages.

At first I imagined the message must be arriving incomplete, yet when I go into Edit Message, there it all is, right down to the last full-stop.
But on closing the Editor, the display remains as broken as ever.

Any suggestions, please?
I¡¯d like to get the Archive loaded before letting the Users back in, and they are hammering on the gates (we deal in Serious Illness).

Re: Moving to Groups.io (without the Easy Yahoo Group transfer mechanism) #howtoguide

Look at the full name of the folders inside the zip file. They are very long and start out with meaningless (to me at least) numbers, but at the end of the folder name is the name of the group the files they contain came from.

Yup, but in every hit I found using those search terms, there was no useful information as to HOW to whitelist a sender, never mind a domain. And the second hit you linked above pointed part way to the solution I found, which was the source of my rant: once the mail goes into the Spam folder, I either have to read it on-line (which I pointed out is not my habit), or create a mechanism to move the "spam" back into the inbox so my email client recognizes it. Comcast does not help with any of that.

Re: Group Addresses in Footer not showing as mailto links in emails

John,

But the ones in the middle which I can change from "post" down to "help" do not even though they seem to show as blue in this response from my cut and paste.
The custom footer one can set (like you have) doesn't really support what you are trying to do with email addresses.? It's more of a text-only box, no support for HTML or RichText like many of the other boxes like setting the group's description page, which has the formatting options on a ribbon at the top of the box.? The custom footer does have a very-very limited "live-link" functionality and that's only if you include a full URL with http(s)://... which it will recognize as a URL and make it active for you.? But it doesn't recognize the mailto: prefix for an email address so it doesn't make that an active link.

IMO, you should post this at the beta forum () as it can be considered missing functionality, after all it recognizes the HTTP: but not the MAILTO:, so it should be an easy fix/enhancement.

Cheers,
Christos

Re: Moving to Groups.io (without the Easy Yahoo Group transfer mechanism) #howtoguide

I read and appreciated the
??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki notes on mkgration.

i have two or three questions remaining confusions:

i have several yahoo groups I like to fully migrate...with their message archives.
of those groups only one is REALLY important ..I'll cal it "ImportantGroup... aka ?"IG" for this thread,)

i fully downloaded all of IG's and my other groups's message archives and uploaded files with PG downloader just before yahoo removed them.
i also took up Yahoo's offer and had them create , and I retrieved one big zip file of MBOX files.
I also have also downloaded the membership list.

so several question I hope someone (Shal??) can help with:

# First , I noticed somewhere that groupsio does now offer an option for paid groups to import archives from MBOX files. So that basically raises my MAIN question is is it easier or better to (A) try importing the archives from the MBOX files or (B) the PG downloader files.
Can you educate me on the pros ?cons of method A vs B??

# I was a bit confused when I got the downloaded-from-yahoo zip.
i looked in there and there's AFAIK no way to tell which files were from which of the five groups that were in there.
That worries me about how or even IF the import (whether done by me manually or some semi-automatic procedure offered by groupsio) can distinguish which files belong to which group. It would be a nightmare if somehow all the different groups' archives got uploaded into my new grouosio IG group.

(BTW, I do understand there's no easy migration path for the files..That's not top priority for me.)

Any info would be helpful in unconfusing me.

Alex

None of us here could even guess (I suspect!) what Mark's position on any given use case might be; as "Mr Groups.io" he is the person who decides what is and is not permissible on a case by case basis.

At the very bottom of the Terms page is this sentence: Please contact us at [email protected] to report any violations of these Terms of Service or to pose any questions regarding this Terms of Service or the Service.

(My italics & underlining)

Any guidance that anyone here could provide would have to be so heavily caveated? it would be more or less meaningless.

I'm hoping that describing to potential group members the kinds of business emails I would be sending/posting would take those emails outside of the definition.

For 1.7, can anyone point me to the list of business purposes "specifically authorized"? (I do see "Types Of Groups That Aren't Permitted" on the Help page: /static/help#types-of-groups-that-arent-permitted. My group would not fall under any of these.)

I appreciate any help you can give me. Even if you can't give specific answers to my questions, perhaps examples of how businesses have been properly using Groups.io might be helpful.

The full wording of 5?(v) is: constitutes unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, commercial activities and/or sales, ¡°junk mail,¡± ¡°spam,¡± ¡°chain letters,¡± ¡°pyramid schemes,¡± ¡°contests,¡± ¡°sweepstakes,¡± or any other form of solicitation;

Uploading a file is a piece of cake. Once it is done, all members can be notified by marking a box in the upload screen.
