Re: Topic structure not functioning

Richard,

I couldn't find any setting that chooses between a topic view or an individual-message view.?
It isn't a setting, it is a menu to switch the viewing mode of the Messages list.

And when I reply online to a post, the reply becomes a new topic rather than appending to the message replied to

Are you sure, or did it just look that way because you were looking at the list in Messages mode?

Re: Some messages not displaying fully

David,

The majority of messages display just fine, but about a third only
display the top part of the content; occasionally only one or two of
the 50 Yahoo messages.
At the point where the message is cut off, is there a blue box that says "Show quoted text"?

If so, click that. That's based on the theory that something about the content at that point is triggering Groups.io's response to top-posting (hides the bottom-quotes).

If not, perhaps there's something funky in the HTML at that point that causes Groups.io's render to believe it has reached the end of the message content.

At first I imagined the message must be arriving incomplete, yet when
I go into Edit Message, there it all is, right down to the last full-
stop.
But on closing the Editor, the display remains as broken as ever.
If you know your way around HTML code you might be able to diagnose and fix it using the Source Code tool in the message editor.

How do I fix/modify the invite message?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have a group that I created a year ago.? The original invite file had my name in it.? Now that original message is what Groups.io tells me it is going to send to an invitee.? Tonight I deleted the invite file and created a new one but when I go to the invite page to invite someone it still includes the text of that very first message and no way to edit or modify it.? If I tell it to add a custom message and include my newly created invite it merely appends it to that first original message that I am trying to get rid of.? What am I missing?

Thank you.

Jim

Are there Message Quotas?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯ve been uploading Yahoo Archives to a new ?group as small batches of Messages.
Each message is a few hundred kb in size.
I¡¯m the Owner of the Group.

Yesterday I¡¯d posted about 15 such messages, around 5Mb in total, when my email program refused to post to ?any more.?
The same server would post to anywhere else but.

After a break of some hours, I managed to get another few messages through before it locked-up again.
Nor could I post from an email alias, nor as a different member with a separate email address.

Are there quotas on how many messages one can post in a given period??
Or is it me??
My computer??
My email provider¡¯s server?
?in overload??
Does my own Group think I¡¯m spamming it?

I¡¯ve been at this over six hours, desperate to get it done before I need to go off grid, and I¡¯m ground down!

Suggestions, please - I¡¯ll clutch at straws,

Thanks, David 1/2d

Topic structure not functioning

When I accessed my group today, I found that 'start merge' and 'merge into' are no longer available in the drop-down menu, And when I reply online to a post, the reply becomes a new topic rather than appending to the message replied to. I couldn't find any setting that chooses between a topic view or an individual-message view.?

Some messages not displaying fully

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Help! (please)

I am transferring a Yahoo Group¡¯s messages over to ?by the rough and ready expedient of posting PGO Digests one at a time as new Messages.?

Each Digest contains 50 Yahoo messages in HTML, and their sizes range from 200kb to 800kb, viz long, but uncomplicated and not ever so big.

The majority of messages display just fine, but about a third only display the top part of the content; occasionally only one or two of the 50 Yahoo messages.

At first I imagined the message must be arriving incomplete, yet when I go into Edit Message, there it all is, right down to the last full-stop.
But on closing the Editor, the display remains as broken as ever.

Any suggestions, please?
I¡¯d like to get the Archive loaded before letting the Users back in, and they are hammering on the gates (we deal in Serious Illness).

Thanks, David 1/2d

Re: New owner help please #howto

June,

The MAIN Group has messages, files and photo sections.

SUB-Groups have their OWN messages, files and photo sections.

Now, with that said, any owner or moderator can turn on or off those functions for either the MAIN or for SUB-Groups.

When I created our first sub-groups, I have to understand that whilst in the sub-groups, all the tools on the left column were only applied to the sub-groups.? The very top of the screen blue bar that says, "Your Groups" is the way I toggle between the MAIN and any of the sub-groups under the MAIN.?? It best to know at what level you are working at and how to leave and enter any other level.

For my group, we have a few groups that were related to our MAIN on Yahoo.? Thus, The primary group became our MAIN on GroupsIO and all of the 4 related groups became sub-groups.? I'm rolling over the sub-groups to basically be the archive from Yahoo.? Read-only for sub-groups.? Members can even download the files and photos too as read-only.? The main group going forward will have everything combined.?

GroupsIO is VERY FLEXIBLE to meet all kinds of needs.? Yet, there is some deep thought into all of this to keep it simple for non-computer geeks like me. haha

Mainly, wasn't sure if anyone had found a particularly better way to do this... I appreciate all the input.

Re: Completely edit default messages for invites, direct add, etc

paul,

A question that comes up is: can I choose to put them where ever I
want or do the added words always go in a specific place?
They go in a specific place.

Go ahead to the Invite page and play with it a bit.

The first box, Invitation To Be Sent, is a preview. As you type your content into the Customize Message box the top box will update to show you the resulting message.

As Frances mentioned you can save pre-written text using the Member Notices tab. In the Customize Message box, below where you type text, is a drop-list from which you can select a saved Member Notice that will then be copied into the text editing box.

When done experimenting you can just click away from the Invite page without clicking the Send Invitations button - no harm done.

Re: Message search by numbers

WRB,

The page index at the bottom said 1-100 of 715. But somehow message
#123 showed up on this page. (???)
The numbers at the bottom are referring to a count of entries in the list, in whatever order that list is sorted by, which has no relationship to message numbers.

Now when I go there I see that following message #25 is message #53503
with message #53574 being the last showing.
Again, message numbers are assigned sequentially as messages are posted to the group. That may not relate precisely with the date of the message, which may reflect its initial creation date time, not when it was posted to the group.

For example, messages held pending moderation are not given a message number until they are approved. Which may be in no particular order with respect to the Date/Time of the messages. This is even more true in the case of imported messages, which were added to the group perhaps a decade or more after their calendar date.

Note that the message numbers are permanently assigned. Deleting a message from the group does not re-number the following messages.

None of this is different, by the way, from a Yahoo Group's message numbers. Except that there was never a facility to import messages from another service.

If I instead forget Admin. And just go to ¡°Messages¡± I get a
presentation that appears to be message numbers sequentially assigned
by topic/date/time, latest first.
The messages or topics, depending on which view you are looking at, are displayed in date order, your choice of newest or oldest first. Again, this has nothing to do with message numbers.

Using GIFs as Cover Photos

On one of the groups I own I change the cover photo regularly -- doing whatever I can think of to entice more members to visit the website -- usually tied in with something being discussed. Today I decided to use a GIF snow scene. So far it displays just fine -- I use Firefox -- though I'm not sure it will display actively in every browser.

I wonder though, is there a downside to using GIFS as cover photos that I should be aware of?

Is there a fix for this?
The main fix is to contact Outlook and vigorously complain about them throttling groups.io messages.

Presumably, good money is being paid in the expectation that desired emails will be delivered. People sign up for this service, and have every right to expect the resulting messages to passed along.?Any concern that some of them "might" be spam is entirely secondary to that.

And it's not unique to Outlook...this same argument applies to Roadrunner and Spectrum and ComCast and AOL and any other provider who periodically operates under the mistaken notion that they are "protecting" their clients by failing to deliver their posts.

If they fail to act on his complaints, the best (and perhaps only) course of action is to vote with his dollars, and find someone else to provide email service for him.

This may sound harsh, but it's become very much like a broken record...the same problem keeps recurring with the same providers, over and over again, and as a result there's a steady stream of folks with good intentions coming here in the hope that groups.io will somehow fix it. They cannot.

Bruce

Paul, it is fairly straightforward.

Go to Admin, Settings, and choose the Member Notices button.

Click on New Notice (blue button below the list)

Use the dropdown menu to choose Invite. (The menu is under Notice Type, Welcome).

I just did it again in my test group and I liked Shal's suggestion of putting a horizontal line first. Open the three bar hamburger menu to see all the editing tools.
Click on the horizontal line. (3rd one on the second line)

Type whatever you want to add to the message. Notice you can change the text size, font, colour, etc.

If you are using the style to separate your text, put in another horizontal line.

And then click on Add Notice. This saves it.

When you are ready to invite someone, pick this invitation.

Note, you can have more than one invite notice. And you can change the heading - Invite to main group, perhaps. Or invite mentioning blah blah subgroup.
Whatever works for you.

Frances

Re: Message search by numbers

Hi Shal,

In stumbling around the various options, first I tried Admin./Activity/Message activity. The first ¡°sort¡± shown was only messages posted since the migration to Groups.io numbered #1 (10/30/19). The page index at the bottom said 1-100 of 715. But somehow message #123 showed up on this page. (???)

Now when I go there I see that following message #25 is message #53503 with message #53574 being the last showing. Clearly these are not assigned numbers according to date and time, but mostly by ¡°Topic¡± and THEN date and time (sigh). Due to ¡°subject drift¡± I find ¡°topic¡± only useful in finding the start of a particular ¡°thread¡± after which a date-sequence presentation is better to follow up with when researching aircraft maintenance, etc. topics (which often recur anew over the years).

If I instead forget Admin. And just go to ¡°Messages¡± I get a presentation that appears to be message numbers sequentially assigned by topic/date/time, latest first. Clicking on ¡°Date¡± it reverses the sequencer to oldest first. For the great majority of messages, this IS a "sort by message number" presentation.

For reference purposes, that works (primarily because of the ¡°Msg #¡± box for lookup. That jumps one to a given message someone else uses as a reference MUCH quicker than plowing forward or backward (even at 100/page without unlimited scroll).

Best!

At the time of the import, the imported messages would be assigned sequential numbers, starting at one greater than any message already posted in the group. New messages after the import would continue sequentially from there.

Once you open one of the imported messages, you can page through them by message number. But I don't know of any way to get a list of messages by message number rather than date order.

I presume a request to include message numbers in above sequential
date and time listing would go to Beta?
Correct. Sort by number would be a new option on the Messages list.

Re: Subgroup for your own Moderator's Forum? #moderators

Most mail programs have a feature where mail can be sent to more than one address at a time, i.e., a group of sorts.? Unless there are many, many mods, wouldn't it be easy enough for each mod to have such a group [example:? mygroupmods, which would open to a listing of a number? addresses in each address book]????? I've used group sends often on various lists, such as a book club, and all that's required is that each person responding does so using "reply all."

Certainly someone chosen to act as a moderator should be able to do that with little difficulty, and unless there are files involved, communication is a snap!

No setting up of extra sub-groups, just a simple address list on the mods' own computers.

Sandy

At 01:32 PM 1/11/2020, you wrote:

Bryan,

While the idea itself is sound, IMO, using a subgroup for this would really depend on how many mods you have and whether you want to have any conversations, attachments, files, photos, etc, archived for later reference or reuse when a new mod comes in, etc; if yes, a (private) subgroup would work great with all the features GIO has, although keep in mind that if you don't already have a subgroup already, there are some addressing changes that take place as stated.

Taking into account the caveats already been stated, if you don't care about archiving anything or have maybe a few mods, it'll be less work just doing it through an email list; or use the +owner address as suggested, but keep in mind in this case, in order for this to work effectively, all mods will have to have the receive owner email to ON otherwise this scheme will not work well.
