well, with me being sort of an amateur flutist, having played for 22 years, I can't help you there. Sometimes though, splitting notes, which is where you take the low note, such as the E flat, and then build up to the extreme high note. To split the notes, you go up to the middle E flat, and then put a little bit more air through the instrument to get the extreme high E flat wall forming the fingering for the middle. I wish there were a way I could demonstrate. I'll try to make a YouTube video. I do everything by ear, and braille music is really hard. Can you imagine trying to learn a piece that way? It takes too long, and so I rely completely on both auditory and my memory. also, I have perfect pitch, and it can be a blessing or a curse. It's a blessing, when the person you're sitting next to is right on key. It's a curse, when they're extremely off key, or way flat. Amanda.

wow! I'll take out the flute when the urge strikes. There is an excellent flute player who is very well known. Actually, there are several. The only two I can think of at this particular moment are Sir James Galway, and Ian Anderson.

that's good. I'm glad you picked up your flute again after decades. I've been playing the flute for 22 years. Oh my teacher had to do, because she also taught me piano, is start me on a piece of music at her house on either instrument, and then I would take it from there on my own at home. I have perfect pitch, which can be a blessing or a curse. You never know what can happen. I find that splitting my notes is easier than trying what is called the baroque or fork method.?

hi there. My apologies if your name does not come out right properly in text. Welcome to the member from Sweden. My name is Amanda, and I'm from the US. Not doing much today. Had my workout this morning, which went really well. Tonight, I have to work. for those of you that are curious as to what I do for my professional career, I am a roller of silverware at a local restaurant in my area. I can probably roll about 2 to 3 buckets per shift, that is if my wrists don't spasm first lol?

Like most notes on the flute, you should train to automatically adjust the intonation the usual ways (advancing or receding chin slightly, aiming the airstream higher or lower, etc.)? It's just part of the gig.? For forte/fortissimo dynamic level for that note, you can also flatten it by pressing the footjoint Eb and C# keys simultaneously.? If the passage in question does not allow time for this, it's likely the high Eb will be such a short note that the unadjusted pitch will not be noticeable.

hi Sandy. Glad to hear you're playing a lot. That's good practice. Although I've been playing the flute for 22 years, I still have to practice every once in a while. Especially if it's something I'm learning. Good luck. but I mean is, I wish you luck with everything you have to do regarding the flute. The flute is a beautiful instrument, and I love it a lot.

Re: High Eb goes sharp

that's true. Just as the baroque fingering for the E flat does not work for me, but splitting the notes does, I use it. Splitting the notes is easier than trying the Baroque, or fork method. I've tried several times, and can't get it. Splitting the notes is easier for me. I have perfect pitch, and sometimes it can be a blessing or a curse. I have two western concert flute in my possession. A Jupiter, and a mio. if something works for you, use it. That's the best advice we can give.

One thing I’ve noticed is that what works for you may not work for others and visa versa. If the overblown fingering works, use it.

The other thing is that to many folks look for perfect pitch and forget the emotion. Sometimes a slightly off pitch note can add to the music. Use your ears.

Good luck. Find your own salvation.

Today while practicing scales with my electronic tuner, I noticed that my 3rd octave Eb (the one with all the keys down) went sharp by 20 to 30 cents. I can bring it down by directing the air stream lower into the hole after a bit of trying, but it makes going to that note extra complicated for playing fast.
However, I tried _not_ putting all the keys down, and just kept the middle octave fingering (left #1 up), while speeding up the air until the octave popped and it was perfectly in tune with an acceptable tone.
Is this something that anyone else noticed? If I keep the middle octave fingering, am I going to run into trouble eventually?
I'll mention that my flute is a Pearl Quantz, in case this is a known characteristic.
Thanks in advance,
