Re: silly questions and school

Karen Stafford

Don't worry, Jill. I had to ask the same question once. I always knew
him as William Bennett from my college days :-)I never KNEW him, knew
him. This is just from an educational point of view.

Jill,
The Wibb question has been asked many times, don't worry. =)

Hello Jill (you are Jilly??) - First off there are no silly
questions. Some of us oldtimers get to going and forget others may not
have been around long enough to pick up on some things. WIBB is William
Bennett. It is what he prefers to be called, the name comes from his
initials. He is a wonderful player and teacher. He is my mentor and is
highly respected in the flute world. Wibb plays old French flutes, as do
several others of us. You are correct about Lot. He was one of the
leading makers of French flutes from the 1850s into the early 20th century.
They are no longer made. Other names of flute makers in France durning
this era you may see from time to time are: Bonneville, Lebret, Rive, and
Barbier.
Keep the questions coming!!! How are you going to know if you
don't ask.
Cheers!!

bolshy strangers/Guy's success/blackberry decor?/Sally Ann

Hi all!
My goodness, what was this? Some complete stranger running around sending
bolshy notes to the members? Gosh, wonder when mine will come...so how many
of you got them, were they actually mean, or just bossy???? Good that Glen
was here to tell him/her off, anyway! <G>

Many welcomes and congrats and kudos, Guy!! I'll bet that now you are just
itching to perform again, eh? <GGG> It kinda gets into your blood, doesn't
it? Even the nerves and things are like no other experience...How wonderful
of that lady to wait for your concert and then pursue you for lessons, too!
Not exactly bad for the old ego, eh? Heehee....
..and now all that music as well, albeit obtained in a bittersweet
manner...more to serenade your carcasses with! (this fluting must work
better than meat tenderizer hammers...,G>)

Well, Caroline? You asked us to hang in with crossed fingers while you
prepared your blackberry icecream concoction...(but why oh why did you clean
the kitchen FIRST??!<G>)...So? Is it done yet? Is it yummy? So when are you
inviting the list to your virtual ice cream party, hmmm? <GGG>

Welcome back Sally Ann!! And how wonderful that you're getting so much
fluter fanaticism in your neck of the woods so soon, wow! Soo, will you be
polishing up a piece or three for WIBB's classes yourself?

Sorry to hear about your (ex) locust tree going down in the
storm-that-wasn't-officially-a-tornado-but-acted-like-one! <G> So will you
be sending it down to Jess for her long house?

Oboy, if Ira was enough into the Erie Canal to compose for it, wait til he
gets into the British canal system!! (and now we know what nom de plume our
WUA uses on holiday: Adrian Sunshine!<GG> )

Oh dear, hope Teddy Fluffy Boy is over his drug induced surliness...maybe he
got online with my Bumblegrowl by mistake, eh?
Is the Massive Fafness still rolling along?

Advance publicity..WIBB's new CD!!

Fellow Fluters,

Just to let you know that I am writing the CD notes for WIBB's new CD.
A great programme of rarer flute pieces with orchestra:

1. Romance Dvorak

2. Concerto Reinecke

3. Nocturne Sibelius

4. Concerto Nielsen

5. The Serious Doll Elgar

6. Ballade Reinecke

Any of you attending last year's NFA Convention will have heard him play the
Nielsen.....his playing of this is so moving..so completely satisfying.

We had an Ozzette..that is a female Australian <<GG>>..play the Reinecke
and another play the Nielsen on the Summer School...superb players both
of them. There is a lot of talent coming from 'down under'.....and we ain't
heard our Wendy yet.....well I have... and she is another great talent..
and her flute playing is quite good too......<<GGG>>

Open-hole piccolos

There is a very sound acoustical reason for making open-hole piccs...even if
they can be a bit difficult to finger. The Louis Lot and Bonneville piccs..
and I have also a Cabart and a Rive..were naturally made on the old conical
bore...as most modern wooden piccs with closed keys. The advantage of the
open-holes is the extra venting on the RH..where the bore starts to constrict
and, with the ring key mechanism you have a perfect...well almost..high
F#....as you just close the ring to shut the G hole...like a Brossa F#.
High F# is a real "bete noire" on piccs. Middle E and Eb are also helped
by the extra venting. Rudall Carte made a model with only 2 open ring keys on
the RH 2 and 3 and covered keys on the rest...probably the best compromise.
The sound of a Bonneville open-holed piccolo...followed closely by a Lot
should convince a keen ear that there is an advantage...but if you carry
a bunch of bananas on the end of each hand...well it could be a tad difficult!!

Adrian

I'm going
to try and get the one before WIBB, which will also give Nick a practise
run at open G#. (Someone's already down for the one after WIBB!)
WIBB's scale is designed for open G#, and it's easier to make them that
way. I'm sure it will be great.
Has anyone ordered no.1? I got the idea that WIBB put an order for no.5
before anyone else.

Are you going to be doing the padding?
If you like me to. I'll even come out of retirement to do it <G>
Right, I'm doing it! Tried to ring Nick this afternoon, but he was out.
I'll get hold of him tomorrow and get my name on that list!

Simple solution to that - I don't teach! Never have done anyway,
although I'm a lot more patient than I used to be and I think I probably
could these days. But there are enough flute teachers in Cambridge
teaching up to Grade 8 without me adding to the number.

Oboy, do have fun with the Ibert if you're into getting some gritty new
repertoire! (and start a drinks fund for the poor pianist...<G>) That
is certainly one of the showiest, I think...lots of fingering tricks to
play with as well! The Nielsen, well, although it is one of my
favourites, I don't think it sounds its best with piano...unless you
sneak in a friendly bass trombonist along with you at the concert, that
is!!! (you do know all about the jokes involved with how Nielsen
composed for his friends???)
Yup! Certainly a reason why he wrote that trombone part for a concerto
for WIND instrument anyway...<g>.

I'm feeling virtous today, cos I've just blitzed the kitchen and you can
now see that all the surfaces are white, not coffee coloured! So I'm
going to treat myself by making blackberry icecream tonight - I picked
the fruit earlier today and now I'm just off to Sainsburys for cream and
sugar - cross your fingers it turns out ok!

Re: Cats in Physics

Caroline <[email protected]

Found this in one of the newsgroups I read and thought it might give
people a laugh - enjoy!

Caroline

Cats in Physics

1 - Law of Cat Inertia
A cat at rest will tend to remain at rest, unless acted upon by some outside
force - such as the opening of cat food, or a nearby scurrying mouse.

2 - Law of Cat Motion
A cat will move in a straight line, unless there is a really good reason to
change direction.

3 - Law of Cat Magnetism
All blue blazers and black sweaters attract cat hair in direct proportion to
the darkness of the fabric.

4 - Law of Cat Thermodynamics
Heat flows from a warmer to a cooler body, except in the case of a cat, in
which case all heat flows to the cat.

5 - Law of Cat Stretching
A cat will stretch to a distance proportional to the length of the nap just
taken.

6 - Law of Cat Sleeping
All cats must sleep with people whenever possible, in a position as
uncomfortable for the people involved as is possible for the cat.

7 - Law of Cat Elongation
A cat can make her body long enough to reach just about any counter top that
has anything remotely interesting on it.

8 - Law of Cat Acceleration
A cat will accelerate at a constant rate, until he gets good and ready to
stop.

9 - Law of Dinner Table Attendance
Cats must attend all meals when anything good is served.

10 - Law of Rug Configuration
No rug may remain in its naturally flat state for very long.

11 - Law of Obedience Resistance
A cat's resistance varies in proportion to a human's desire for her to do
something.

12 - First Law of Energy Conservation
Cats know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed and will,
therefore, use as little energy as possible.

13 - Second Law of Energy Conservation
Cats also know that energy can only be stored by a lot of napping.

14 - Law of Refrigerator Observation
If a cat watches a refrigerator long enough, someone will come along and take
out something good to eat.

15 - Law of Electric Blanket Attraction
Turn on an electric blanket and a cat will jump into bed at the speed of
light.

16 - Law of Random Comfort Seeking
A cat will always seek, and usually take over, the most comfortable spot in
any given room.

17 - Law of Bag / Box Occupancy
All bags and boxes in a given room must contain a cat within the earliest
possible nanosecond.

18 - Law of Cat Embarrassment
A cat's irritation rises in direct proportion to her embarrassment times the
amount of human laughter.

19 - Law of Milk Consumption
A cat will drink his weight in milk, squared, just to show you he can.

20 - Law of Furniture Replacement
A cat's desire to scratch furniture is directly proportional to the cost of
the furniture.

21 - Law of Cat Landing
A cat will always land in the softest place possible.

22 - Law of Fluid Displacement
A cat immersed in milk will displace her own volume, minus the amount of milk
consumed.

23 - Law of Cat Disinterest
A cat's interest level will vary in inverse proportion to the amount of
effort a human expends in trying to interest him.

24 - Law of Pill Rejection
Any pill given to a cat has the potential energy to reach escape velocity.

25 - Law of Cat Composition
A cat is composed of Matter + Anti-Matter + It Doesn't Matter.

circle of 5ths; moving story; England/Italy; catch up

Hart, Sally Ann ( Admin )

Dear Flutenetters,

It seems like it's time for me to catch up with all the new folks who
have joined! Welcome Nan, Bonnie, and all others! Yes, please ask your
questions about flutes, tuning, fluting, rhythms, whatever. As you can
see, there are willing and able teachers and helpers around here!

Well, how do I start to catch up? Thanks to all the students who asked
about the circle of 5ths and remembering the cycle. I have made
bulletin board sheets for all those tricky little sayings for my
students, did father charles, etc. all up in cute little fonts, or big
fonts.

Nancy,

Oh so good to hear your report about the Wibb class and concerts. I
await your tale of the English flute concert too. And your lessons on
breathing. Are you using the bag to an advantage yet? After our
Underwood class, I made up a bag with a brass mouthpiece, and I use the
ping pong ball breath builder. Still have a way to go yet. Do you know
we feel so lucky here in Rochester, because our flute club has just
joined forces with professor Bonita Boyd at Eastman school to have Wm
Bennett here for a master class and recital in February. We think the
classes will be 1/2 open for Eastman students, and 1/2 available to
flute club members. The recital will be in Kilbourn Hall, which is just
about one of the finest recital halls in the world to hear a chamber
concert. We can't wait.

Guy,

Your moving story was indeed moving to me. I know you will treasure the
music you have got from your friend.

And here I was, thinking about getting ready to trek across New York
state to have our early september flutenet picnic in Quebec, and I find
that you were involved in other things, and that Calla is off with sore
hands. Then I hear that Jessica has enough sticks to build an Iroquois
long house, or at least use the toppled saplings for teepee poles. But
then maybe there is not enough room for teepees on all those wooded
acres. Jessica, that sure sounds very lush and pleasant.

And Clare,

You shared such wonderful photographs of your castle in Scotland. I do
love thinking about it. Don't forget to keep asking us flutenetters to
visit and bring brooms and caulking and paint and elbow grease.

Sandi and Richard, Taera and Lynn,

We're still eating hot pepper jelly and my friends that wonderful honey.
Remembering Seattle and vicinity very fondly!!! <hugs>

Max,

You finally seem to have jolted me out of lurking with the Hamlet Cat.
How eloquent! Michelle and Lyn, we'll have to see about getting the
feline contingent going again with a little marching and clawing for
lurkers (me high on the list). Teddy has been on medicine for a few
weeks, his FUS acted up - what a grouch he turned into for a bit.

Adrian,

So you have set fingers back to keyboard! Great to hear your ventures.
All the talk of places around England reminds me that my composer friend
called a few weeks ago to tell me he got married and is moving to
england. Turns out he (at age 70++) is marrying his late wife's sister,
who visited over the summer from Norfolk. So where is Norfolk? near any
of you? Lynsorebottom, I love that!! Well, if it is I will have to put
Ira in touch with you all. He is the one who wrote the pennywhistle
concerto last spring, and the rhapsody to celebrate our Erie Canal.
Folksy sort of writing. He says he is hooking up with a composer friend
in England, and I swear he said the name was Adrian Sunshine. Is that
right?

Adrian you must have been putting in the good word with WIBB, too,
because he (WIBB that is) seems to be on the schedule for a recital and
masterclass here in Rochester NY in February (snow season). You can bet
I'm going to work up something for that class if I get lucky to be drawn
for it.

Glen,

Arrivederla a Italia!!

Carol,

Did you get my private e-mail about flute clubs? Looking forward to
hearing back from you.

All intrested in the weather (not Monica's knitting),

it certainly must be a while since I've written, and I know I haven't
told you that we had a most fierce storm here last Sunday night. Went
all the way across the western part of New York State from the lake
(Ontario) down to Syracuse. The whole time it blew off roofs and
toppled trees and utility poles. Our immediate little hamlet lost
electricity from Sunday night until yesterday noon. Reminded me of
living in the cabin in the woods (which my husband and I did once long
ago during hippie times) when we would have laughed at that toilet paper
hangs which way question. We just used to set it on the floor in the
outhouse! Anyway, we are still picking up branches at home, and have
lost a lovely black locust tree which fell on the power wires. Still no
one says it was a tornado, was just spouts of heavy winds 90 mph.
Anyway, now I am back at work, and that is what I must do as I have 5
projects begging at my heels.

Later,

Sally Ann

from Hoffman <hoffman@...>:

They have ring keys, rather like a clarinet. It's nice to have open
holes
but I find the holes too close for my large fingers (have you tried one
Glen?).
I have the same problem. My large hands and the picc do not make
comfortable partners. Like everything else it is possible to get
around it but I never feel happy playing the shreiking stick and only
play it if gold bricks are on offer from the booker.
I have small hands and fingers and couldn't play the open holed picc
comfortably. The rings had a strange feel to them, not like the open hole
flute I'm accustomed to.

Anyway, who would want to play a picc when bass flutes are available??
I had another good practice sesion on the bass flute at NFA, I played 2
octaves. Well I got a sound out of most of 2 octaves.

Played a chromatic scale 3 octaves on the alto rather easily.

Has anyone tried the new Trevor James Alto Flute? It's heavily discounted
in the States for the rest of Sept as an introductory offer. $1300-1400
US. I think Cincinnati Fluteworks has them.

At NFA, Someone played a bass and alto flute solo I think it was somebody
from Caliendo (sp) Pub. It sounded gorgeous. I had never heard either as a
solo instrument before.

I have received posts telling me that someone is sending people mail

So the rest of us who haven't been "warned" should start posting non flute

Seriously, perhaps they should just be referred to Larry's list. Sounds
like they'd be more comfortable over there.

Hey all,

GOGOGOGOGO GLEN!!!!!! You tell them :) Today I happened to be alone in the
music rooms at school and I picked up a flute and tried to play it. What is
the trick of getting a sound out of it? hehe I must have sounded awful. I
could play the low notes, from D to B, I couldn't find C at the bottom and
top of the lower octave. I guess it may have helped to have a tutor-like
book to refer to. Just thought I'd let you all now I've actually *tried* to
