Maybe I'll find one at a hamfest. You never know what you'll find, often even
non-ham items. I picked up a Samsung 3 watch for $10. I've picked up working older Kenwood or Icom HTs for $25. An Icom 7300 for $700 that came with some extras, the extras were worth about $50, so it was a good deal. I'm looking for a certain WWII German straight Morse code key like my dad had and I learned on. I'm just waiting for the hamfests starting in the spring (already made it to one in the winter this year last month). I also am looking for a 144-432 dual band beam, or I might make one. They're not expensive on eBay but I'd bet the quality isn't there for the price of $60. re: 33cm...there are a few repeaters here in SoCal on 902. I did a check last year and monitored them all for a full 28 days. There were 3 QSOs spread between 5 repeaters over the 4 weeks. The 23cm machines are a little better, but not much. The 70cm and 1.25m machines usually have 1 or 2 QSOs per day. The 2m machines (all 40 of them!) are gathering dust. The lone 6m machine hears pretty well, but the transmitter has been <5mw output for nearly a year now. Go figure! ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYes, the 902mhz (33cm) band is the ISM (industrial, Scientific, Medical) band.? Some baby monitors work on that band, and there is a few commercial rigs out there that can be modified to cover our ham band part.? Some are ready to go, others require some modification.? Alinco made the DJ-G29 which was a dualband 222mhz/902mhz HT.? It wasn't on the market very long.?? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Don, Alinco had the DJ-G7T triband HT which did 23cm. IT looks like it has been discontinued, unfortunately, but I am sure there are plenty out there still. Icom had the T81A (had a few in the past), the X2A and X21AT which were 70cm/23cm dualband HTs, and the Delta 1 triband HT-try to find one of those today Standard made a triband HT as well, maybe the C628? 73 John AF5CC Sent using Zoho Mail ---- On Tue, 18 Feb 2025 16:35:10 -0600 Donald Hellen <donhellen@...> wrote ---

Re: 23cm models
I'd go $300 if they ruggedized it and covered all of those bands. They can leave
out DMR as far as I am concerned. I have a 144-440 Anytone DMR and only use it to talk with my brother across the country in California from Ohio. I'd rather just use a phone, really! :-) He bought a DMR radio to talk with me on Sunday evenings. I got it working with the help of a hotspot and a nearby ham who set up the hotspot for me, but I would rather talk with him by phone or maybe 15 or 20 meters (he's a technician, so I have to wait for him to get his general license for that). I would expect maybe a separate telescopic antenna for 6M. A stubby antenna for 6 isn't going to work well. But I can always put my own on, I suppose. I envision a telescopic antenna that is attached to the side of the radio, with screws with an end that you can just use your fingers to detach the antenna so that it's replaceable (they WILL get damaged by some of us, eventually), a switch to switch between the telescopic antenna and a multiple band antenna for 144, 222, 440, 1296, and maybe 902 MHz. If you don't plan to use 6M, you could detach the antenna or just leave it in the trunk of your car. What goes on in the 902 MHz band? Is it one of those shared allocation bands? Re: 23cm models
What ARE the current offerings for 1.2 GHz besides an Icom 9700? By offerings,
I am referring to HTs (portable, hand-helds), not desktop radios like my 9700. I'm not going to carry my 9700 around with me everywhere, but if I had a 1.2 GHz HT, I might take it along, especially if, as someone else mentioned, if covered 144, 220, 440, and 1296 MHz. I know nothing about the 902 MHz band. I'd consider putting up a local repeater for 1.2 GHz if we only had traffic on our 2M and 440 repeaters. No sense spreading out the quiet even farther. :-) Donald KX8K On Tue, 18 Feb 2025 09:05:38 -0800, "John Geiger AF5CC via groups.io" <Af5cc1@...> wrote: Since Baofeng is now making triband HTs ridiculously cheap, giving everyone a shot s 222mhz, anyone think there is a chance that they might soon come out with a model that covers 1.2GHZ? ---------------------------------------------------- Some ham radio groups you may be interested in: /g/ICOM /g/Ham-Antennas /g/HamRadioHelp /g/Baofeng /g/CHIRP |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI do believe Wouxun makes a 6m/2m dualband HT.? Or at least they used to.? Since Baofeng is now making triband HTs ridiculously cheap, giving everyone a shot s 222mhz, anyone think there is a chance that they might soon come out with a model that covers 1.2GHZ?? That would be awesome-Baofeng on the microwaves.? 902mhz would also be a nice edition.? I would go $100 for a Baofeng that covered 2m, 222mhz, 70cm, 902mhz, and 1.2ghz.? Don't need DMR, GPS or any of those things-just great analog FM.

Re: BaoFeng T26 programming
If they don't list the radio, they don't officially support it, but you can try
on their website for more information. They might also have an alpha or beta version you can try. We're just a peer to peer support group and don't have an official channel to CHIRP. BF-888S frequencies
This is a digression from Nigel's question about suitable HTs for use by non-hams in South Africa.? So, here's a new thread.
As I understand it, it was probably illegal for anyone to sell me my BF-888Ss.? However, I don't think it was not illegal for me to buy them.? It would have been illegal for me to transmit with them on any of the frequencies that were programmed into them when they arrived.? I plan to use them as receivers for hidden transmitter hunts.? They now have ham frequencies programmed with the TX function disabled.

If not, then they're not legal for the license-free FRS band. Based on what I found by searching on its FCC ID ( 2AJGM-T20) it seems like it might actually be a license-free radio in USA.If you need a license-free radio, make sure they are. Baofeng tot into some trouble with their early UV-5Rs. I forget exactly why, but for ham use, it didn't matter. The manufacturer was in the wrong, but a ham using it on ham frequencies with his band privileges wasn't in the wrong, so they were cheap ham radios for VHF/UHF. Baofeng had to do something to limit the programming for their UV-5R, and the new one is not the same as the old one. With that said, the user of the old ones have to be sure they don't program their radios to be able to operate outside the ham bands like, say, on police, fire, municipal, air, etc. frequencies. Meanwhile, the prior version of the BF-888S is still available, too.? Here's my guess of what's going on:? The new radio's model name is actually "T20" and the sellers put "BF-888S" in the title in order to get attention from those who are looking for a BF-888S..I would do all the homework on this if you are thinking of using these on the license-free FRS band or the licensed GMRS band (I think it's $75 for 5 year license?). They should not be programmable in frequency, if I understand this correctly. You might run this question in the HamRadioHelp radio group since it could apply to other radios on the market. I'd hate to see you get fined or your equipment, or have it confiscated for (unknown) illegal operation. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and it would depend on the judge whether what the radio maker said on the packaging or in the instructions, or what they allowed to be done in the frequency programming, was what misled you and you would have the charges against you dropped. If you're a ham, I think that would be less likely since we're supposed to know where we are allowed to transmit. Here's the group I mentioned previously. Your first posts will be moderated, so don't repeatedly post the same thing over and over, thinking something is wrong. Remember, Baofeng's packaging of the BF-888 SAID it was license-free. If didn't say it was for FRS, which is license-free in the USA. I was pretty sure I was getting a radio that wasn't legal to sell that way when I bought the pair, so I knew what I was doing, but I'm sure some people were buying those thinking they were FRS radios that anyone could use. That radio wasn't packaged for North America or the USA. I should have recorded the frequencies that were programmed in at the factory just to see what bands they'd be transmitting in. Think about it. What if they had aviation frequencies programmed in some of the 16 (?) memories and someone tried to use them as a legally free radio on it, then got arrested, etc. That is probably what led up to the "new and improved" BF-888. Now they are probably legal here in the US but less useful to hams. They have one thing going for them. they are dirt cheap at under $25. That's for TWO of them! Mine came with drop-in chargers, earphone/mics, and probably some other stuff. I don't remember if the antennas are removable but I think they are. I don't recommend an HT for a first radio unless you're close to repeaters. A mobile unit would be better with 25 or more watts of power to hit the repeaters. Better yet is to get a general class license and enjoy the low bands. To me, that's where most of the fun is at. Entry-level radios have come way down. A QRP radio, Xiegu G-90, is $250. Icom's 718 comes in a little over $600 but that's close to used price for a 7300, which for most hams would be their retirement radio. It's a great radio, folks!!! (I have two.) They're (the BF-888s I bought around 2016) illegal for the latter because they are not FCC type accepted, put out too much power, and probably for other reasons as well. They may even have scrambling as an option. For ham use, they'd be OK. Also, any speculation or knowledge about why these have so few sellers and why they're not mentioned on the BaoFeng website? The packaging on my BF-888s said they were license-free. They were definitely NOT license-free because they could be programmed on frequencies that were not FRS channels, and the output exceeded the maximum allowed, I believe, for FRS/GMRS. If you plan to use them for ham use, there shouldn't be a problem. This is just some food for thought. Re: Greetings from sunny South Africa
Hi Nigel and Donald,
I recently noticed "Upgraded" BF-888Ss on offer at Amazon.? They're also called "T20". The appearance is very similar to that of the Zartek TX8 I found based on a search for same.? It appears to have a non-removeable antenna, unlike the BF-888Ss I bought a few years ago.? Based on what I found by searching on its FCC ID (2AJGM-T20) it seems like it might actually be a license-free radio in USA.
Meanwhile, the prior version of the BF-888S is still available, too.? Here's my guess of what's going on:? The new radio's model name is actually "T20" and the sellers put "BF-888S" in the title in order to get attention from those who are looking for a BF-888S.
So...if the Zartek TX8 and BaoFeng T20 are actually the same radio, the T20 would be as technically legal as the TX8.? However, Zartek might have done some paperwork with governments in its market area to make the units with their label affixed to be administratively legal as well.
Cheers

I bought a pair of these simple FRS radios in part because their shape - easy to put in a pocket.? The description says they support CTCSS and VOX.? The manual describes CTCSS but says nothing about how to select which tone to use.? The manual mentions programming the VOX sensitivity but says nothing about how to do it.? Does anyone here know or wish to hazard a guess as to how to program these?
Also, any speculation or knowledge about why these have so few sellers and why they're not mentioned on the BaoFeng website?

Re: screws
A well-stocked hardware store might have them. Take the clip and radio with you.
You don't want screws that are longer than the holes drilled for them. They'll be metric, most likely. Take note of whether the screws are round head or tapered head.
