I had the same problem with a UV5R with an external speaker/mic.
The mic element is mounted flush on the internal PC board in the external speaker/mic. There's a round fixed-formed tube on the inside front cover of the external speaker/mic. You have to remove the 3 screws on the rear of the external speaker/mic to see this tube form. You'll see the MIC element mounted flush on the small PC board. The round tube makes the audio sound as though you're talking through a tube.
I drilled out the very small mic hole on the front cover with a larger drill bit. The front cover must be separated from the rear cover.
Next, I removed the original Electret microphone element from the small PC board in order to replace it with a new one. New Electret elements can be found on eBay. Make sure you note the polarity of the original element so the new element can be installed properly.
I cleaned the two mic element PC board mounting holes of solder.
I then slid the new element wires, being sure to observe proper polarity, into the holes on the PC board. I did not solder the element wires just yet. I wanted to ensure the mic element was as close to the inside of the front cover's new hole as possible.
After adjusting the length of the mic element wires so the element was close to the front cover, I soldered the mic element leads to the PC board and cut the excess mic element leads.
I reassembled the external speaker/mic and performed a simple test with a distant station.
If you do this right, the transmitted audio will be significantly improved with no more audio that sounds like you're taking through a tube.

Re: DM-1701 contacts help
Wondering if you found the answer why after loading in Digital Contacts, you don't see on the display the info you should be seeing, the call sign, qth, etc.
I have a friend who just picked this radio up and after struggling trying to figure out why he could not load a contact list (import) into the radio, now he doesn't see the info on the screen.? His problem with the not being able to import anything was because he did not previously install Microsoft Excel on his computer. Apparently required for the CPS to do importing/exporting.

Re: Battery Connector BL-5L??
Found this on Google....
That's for charging a 3800mAh battery using the side jack.
To charge the BL-5L 3800mAh battery you must purchase a:
- TYT TH-UVF9 battery charger for 110VAC or
- TYT TH-UVF9D for 12VDC.
- These are fully regulated chargers
- Plugs directly into side of battery, not a charger base
- The AC wall wart has a charging indicator.

Disconnect the 12vdc and the battery indicator drops to two bars and the radio will transmit.
It would appear that this is a charge port. Odd that it is only active when the radio is turned on. What would be the safe charge voltage? 12vdc?

I have a DM-1701 and an Anytone 878UV.?? On the Anytone there are two different areas, one for digital talk groups and another for digital contacts (DMR IDs) that can be displayed on a received signal.?? On the DM-1701 there is only one area labeled digital contacts.?? As I read articles on the web it says you can put either talk groups or digital contacts of the DMR ID type in that area.?? The articles say one or the other but not both??? I know you must have talk groups to create channels.? You do not need to have the DMR database loaded in the radio to use it.
I see lots of articles about how to load the DMR ID database but none about loading the talk groups.?? I loaded several talk groups into the digital contacts area of the codeplug and am using the radio, it works great.?? But I get no display about the transmitting station except their DMR ID that is being sent by their radio.
Can I load both talk groups and DMR ID database into that one area??? Or how do you manage that on a DM-1701?

It's been working fine for several months, but recently when I turn on the radio, it immediately starts? transmitting and none of the buttons on the radio are responsive. If I disconnect the speaker mic, the radio operates normally so I am assuming that the issue is with the radio mic. Has anyone seen this before, or does anyone have tips on how to troubleshoot??
I have raised a query with Baofeng customer support (In the UK) , does anyone know how good or otherwise they are?

I have one of the old ones.
I also have some BF-888's that can be made to operate out of band. The packaging said they were license-free. I thought they were FRS radios. They were cheap, something like $30 for 2 with all the accessories.
They can be put on the 440 ham band, also FRS, GMRS, and even other frequencies. I'm sure they're no longer allowed to sell them in the US, but they're a great way to have a radio for FRS that transmits way more power than an FRS radio is supposed to.

Re: NO SFT-D SAVING MEMORY CHANNEL
LOL ¡ª either we have a failure to communicate or our RF is in different dimensions. I am stupified my step-by-step instructions worked, and with only one save
As you've seen, Bill, AB1LZ, provided the secret, viz., the 2nd time you save, the XMIT freq must be in the upper register. NOW, it is saved to a channel and the display shows + - ! Im writing all this down and may publish a book for clowns, like me, how to program a Baofeng?
I also downlopaded CHIRP and will conquor it...
Thanks for all your help.

Re: NO SFT-D SAVING MEMORY CHANNEL
Gday Maynard,
?
Thanks for your reply!
?
Forgiver me but, I remember something about saving twice but it isnt working, although the rig says receiving or transmitting freq after each save.
?
Here's what Im doing:
?
?
Enter the receive freq, in VFO mode, in top register - 224.580
?
Go to MENU item 27 and DELETE any channels to which I will assign, new, info
?
Go to MENU item 25, SFT-D, enter DOWN
?
Go to MENU item 26, OFFSET, enter 1.600
?
Goto MENU item 27, MEM-CH, enter a deleted channel number and SAVE
?
??????? item 27, MEM-CH, and SAVE a 2nd time
?
?
I cant figure what Im doing wrong but, sometimes, the nice lady says CONFIRMED instead of rcv or xmit freq
?
I have experimented with setting OFFSET to OFF, - and +... no joy
?
I checked MIKLOR but found no info on what Im, specifically, doing incorrectly?
?
Ive tried reversing rcv & xmit freq, adjusting OFFSET to the opposite sign, with resulting copious tears?
?
I am eager to learn how I can be worthy of an Extra-class license, again!
