I updated my SE 2022 from 16.something to 17.5.1 and now messages and notes are in iCloud and I¡¯m getting notices that my iCloud storage (the free 5GB) is nearly full.

I do not want to use iCloud for anything. How do I disable iCloud on my iPhone without losing any data that may have been moved there? Or should I just surrender and buy a terabyte of iCloud space and put everything there? Grumble.
