Re: Google maps and CarPlay?

If voice stopped working for Maps I bet it won’t work for Waze or Google Maps either, though I might give them a try. ?I made no changes in settings but one day, poof. ? Maybe iOS 18 is the culprit. ? Maybe the Subaru dealer can help though I won’t hold my breath.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

I’m in the UK and fitted a Pioneer receiver myself to get CarPlay and other “smart” features, but Waze works very well.

Re: No sound in Maps

Just to say that I find Waze the best route planner/navigation app, in the UK anyway. Although it’s been owned by Google since 2013, it’s been kept separate and I especially like the way that community input keeps it really up-to-date, with a sometimes surprising level of detail, e.g., in the UK, road “potholes” are a real issue and Waze warns me about the worst ones.

No issue with audio for us with Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, Libby, Prime Video, Podcast app, everything. 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid with CarPlay, iPhone 12 mini on iOS 18.1, iPhone 12 Pro on iOS 18.1, all apps on everything (including CarPlay on the car) are updated regularly.

The only times I don’t get audio prompts from Maps is when BT and allow location are turned on _before_ Maps is opened. Otherwise no audio, and I have to force quit Maps and reopen it.

I drive a 2000 Ford Range from before CarPlay, and need a vampire wiring adapter and BT dongle to work from my phone.

Could your accuracy problem be caused by your location? Don’t you live on an island off the upper East Coast? The maps in lower population area are updated less often. Also when did the misadventures happen? Are we talking recent or way back?

On returning to somewhere in the Mid West, I had been told to use a particular highway exit. The one I had used 2 years prior, to get to the same hotel had been closed. A new exit had been built earlier. It took 7 miles to re-route me back to the hotel, but my stand alone Garmin couldn’t do it. Not even after updating the digital map. For some reason it took 3 years for an interstate exit to be corrected.?

I think that is the second or third error I have encountered in 24 years of using GPS for driving directions, and I have driven to some off the beaten path places to remote construction sites for wind farms. Yeah, they mess up street numbers occasionally.?

But this is also why I like printed overview maps. Do you realize that in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, there are like seven Euclid Avenues. And one of those has 6-digit street numbers, while the other side has only 5. That is because the different sides belong to different cities. There is nothing to indicate this, you just have to know. It is kind of like being told to travel to Kansas City. Which one, MO or KS? Same spot on the river, just one is east and the other west.?

On more than one occasion, for reasons unknown to me, when I turn on Maps and start my journey, just like you, there's no sound. What I found is that the sound level has been turned all the way down and clicking the increase sound button on the side solves the problem. Give it a try.
