Re: grinder wheels - HF 46727

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

? Apparently Harbor Freight is no longer carrying the big HF 46727 Tool & Carbide grinder, so I looked around the web and found an old review page that included a picture of it. Located here:

?I'll try to do an "img src=" link directly to their online photo so people with HTML capable email (or reading messages online) can just see the machine without clicking the above link:

?If that is your big Tool & Carbide grinder, then Wholesale Tool has 3 different grits of the Green silicon carbide "Plate Mounted Cup Wheels", and 1 White Aluminum Wheel, 46-K grit. They don't include images of the wheels on their website but it seems to me they used to.(?!). Note that they are rated for 3450 RPM like you need.

?In any case:

?The White Aluminum Oxide you want for grinding HSS is the bottom of the list of 4 wheels on that page. $33.99. Perhaps keep a green for carbide/nonferrous and a white for HSS... 46-K grit is not exactly fine but that is what they carry. You could call them if you have any questions. At least $33.99 is a pretty good price, I've seen higher elsewhere. I doubt these wheels say "Norton" on them or the sticker shock would be considerably higher. :-)

?If you get one of these, please be sure to let us know how you make out.

?Cheers,
?John Z.

Hello Group,

My name is Lance. I live near Buffalo, NY.
I retired from teaching / admin. in 2000.
I am currently afflicted with old metal disease and travel around the NorthEast and Canada buying early 1900's metal lathes and rebuilding them.

To that end, I wanted a small lathe to make parts for the bigger lathes, like bat handles for a Dalton B4 or odd sized screws for a SBL 9A.

Looking about for viable small lathe options, led me to the HF 7x10, which I have just unboxed. First step appears to be to take it apart for cleaning, lube and adjustment.

I looked in the files section for a folder on set-up tips, but didn't find one.

So, my first question is:
what are your suggestions for initial setup?
How mobile is the mini-lathe once setup?
Can I keep it in a drop-front wooden box and use it from there?

Thanks for the group.
I look forward to learning the tricks on these little machines.

BTW:
I have a 16" SBL , a 9A SBL, a 10" B&L, a 8" Waltham, a 7" Dalton B4, a 3" Guilder, and two Burke 4 mills.

Re: LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

It is the size of the motor compartment.? The 14 inch kit has room for a 350 watt? conventional motor, while the 16 inch kit is sized for the more compact stepper motor used in the Hi Torque lathes.? In addition, the bolt hole spacing for the headstock appears different. Interestingly, the longer bed weighs 2 pounds LESS than the 14 inch bed!? ?Probably because of the smaller motor compartment.

I believe it has something to do with the 16 inch bed being designed for use with a BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motor which drives the spindle directly via a belt. The only SIEG lathes that I know of that have this arrangement are the Micromark 7x16 and the LMS Hi-Torque 7x12. The lathes that use the HI/LO gear arrangement are setup to drive the counter shaft with the HI/LO shift gear.

?

I'm sure it could probably be made to work with the HI/LO gear HS (Head Stock) but it might be more work that it is worth.

?

I seem to remember something about the motor mount being different also.

?

Chris at LMS might have other reasons as to why it won't work or at least why it is not recommended.

Just a heads up. LMS has their 16 inch bed extension kit on sale for $99.95

This is only for their LMS 7x12 HiTorque lathe.

It includes a bed casting, a lead screw, a rack, a chip pan.

NOT a bolt on kit. It requires you to drill and tap 10 holes in the new bed casting.

Steve;
You can pick up a used bed,and lead screw on here, and,if you bolt both beds down, and line them up ,you can add another 16 in.
Lead screws can be joined by turning a lap joint, and pin it.
Someone just had a bed for sale on here, and did not know if it sold.
Just ask the group if interested.

A recent thread reminded my why I didn't throw away the old bed when I converted the 7x10 into a 7x14. A couple years ago I saw where a guy had used his old bed from a similar upgrade as a place to park his tailstock when he needed to get it out of the way. He did a decent hack job, but it was still a hack job, and that was all he used it for. A parking pad.

Lets be realistic. We can get some modestly precise work out of a 7 x XX mini lathe but its not a super duper precision instrument. Why not do a little work (as was suggested in another recent thread) to actually make a fully longer lathe out of the assembley. Atleast for rough and low tolerance work. I've had this thought before, but for the most part I need to make some pretty short parts. I don't even use the full capacity of the 8.5 x 18 very often.

Still, once in a while...

Well, I have been working on a non-lathe related project the last few days. (Actually since November 2010). Converting a Hurco KMB1 over to Mach 3 control. I finally ran all three axis on the computer two days ago. I still need to get the automatic oiler hooked up, connect the limits, build my console, connect the VFD to the spindle... etc etc... You get the idea.

When I read the recent thread on extending a machine using an old bed I thought this might be a perfect project for the newly working mill. Use the bed to get everything lined up, and machine some sort of interface to join the two beds modestly accurately. Since I plan to convert the mini over to CNC anyway the lead screw is a non issue. I have some long acmes and some acme taps if I want to go cheap, or I can just use one of those long ballscrews I had planned for a big bed gantry router.

If I go to a servo spindle it could douple as a 4th axis on the big mill too, although with two beds strung together it might start to get a bit heavy to pick up and set on the table. LOL.

Re: Abbreviations

Hey Guys now that's just showing off?!
?
When writing a technical document as I have had to in the past you generally introduce the TLA (Three letter Acronym) or some other such abbreviation at the start of the document and then proceed using the abbreviation without limit after that.
Other documents use a key or addendum at the back giving the reader some chance to decipher the code/abbreviation.

Seems like a good idea to me?
