Re: LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

Steve Langford

Hello...
I am a new member here and I have the HF 7x10...
Was a member at the 7X10 group but they talk about politics there...
Has anyone taken the bed extension for the 7X10 and extended by adding to the existing bed?

I had thought it could be done with exception of a longer lead screw...
Can this lead screw material be bought in bulk?
Does anyone know the thread pitch of the Harbor Freight 7X10 lead screw?
I have had my lathe for 3 years now for building small IC engines and general turning...
I usually buy my stock in 12" lengths and a longer bed would be helpful...

Just a heads up. LMS has their 16 inch bed extension kit on sale for $99.95
?
This is only for their LMS 7x12 HiTorque lathe.
?
It includes a bed casting, a lead screw, a rack, a chip pan.
?
NOT a bolt on kit. It requires you to drill and tap 10 holes in the new bed casting.

Re: chatter

Hi William,

I'm sorry I cannot help with a supplier as I am in the UK.

The mini-lathes are built to a price so the bearings are not the best and often the spindle is not properly fitted and adjusted at the factory to get the best of what is there but in the majority of cases it should be acceptable from the box or capable of adjustment.

Mine was OK from new so it has stayed that way for the last 10 years.

If you find you have bad run-out and it cannot be adjusted to a decent level, or if you simply want a better result than can be achieved with stock then the taper bearing mod is fairly common (and has been for many years), reasonably easy and reasonably cheap (provided you don't go mad with the grade of bearing - top grade bearings can be VERY expensive and the rest of the lathe? will prevent you getting he result the bearings would be capable of)

Here is a link for a very good illustrated article on how a bearing swap is done

Who is a good source for the tapered spindle bearings for mini lathes? I have a micromark 7x16 it is brand new very little use is this mod explained how to do somewhere I would have no idea how to replace spindle bearings in the headstock and is this needed on a new lathe? I haven't checked the runout of the spindle yet.

One dependable supplier would be “Little Machine Shop” -

?

Another would be “McMaster Carr” -

?

I have also seen them on e-bay? ?original number is probably “6206zz” the tapered roller replacement should be “30X62X16”

?

Fun project, good luck.

Thanks if you could post that would be great

Re: chatter

Little Machine Shop sells the bearings but I got mine from a local auto parts store, Autozone. They had them in stock.

There are some good guides on the web, one in particular is a .PDF with full pictures. I have it bookmarked on my computer at home. If nobody posts it I can do it tonight. It isn't that hard if you've ever done a car bearing.

I want to thank you all for the advice I tried another metal in my lathe and got no chatter so I guess my tool wasn't ground right for brass what's weird tho is I made another project from brass on my harbor freight lathe and no chatter using the same tools with a rake angle on the top of the tools.had no chatter but once I had the problem on my micro mark I again tried the harbor freight lathe and was getting chatter? I will have to learn to grind for brass is the DVD that LMS sells a good source to learn different grinds for different materials?

Re: Abbreviations

开云体育

It can be a bit confusing at first, but you'll soon pick them up.
?
A few common ones used here and elsewhere:
?
TIR, which has already been explained
?
HS or H/S for headstock and TS or T/S for tailstock.
?
A DI?is a plunger-operated Dial Indicator with a fairly large range of perhaps an inch or more.
?
DTI usually stands for a Dial Test Indicator with a finger, and a very short range such as?0.030", though some folk use DTI for plunger-type dial indicators, too. Both types are sometimes called clocks, as in "Clocking it true."
?
Confusingly, a TDI or Thread Dial Indicator is a device attached to a lathe's apron or saddle to assist in getting the tool to run down the same furrow on successive cuts when screwcutting.
?
NF, NC, UNC, BSW (or "Whit"), BSF and BA refer to different thread standards , invented to ensure that a?nut which looks the same size as your bolt won't actually fit.
?
PCD or Pitch Circle Diameter often refers to the?imaginary circle which passes through the centres of holes arranged in a ring.
?
PD and Mod, when used in connection with gears, refer to standards too complicated to go into here. Gears come with lots of abbreviations.
?
MT is Morse Taper, and is usually?preceded or followed by a number to indicate size as in MT2 or 2MT
?
PITA refers to a pain in the [anatomy].?
?
That's enough for now. Learn them in time for tomorrow's test :-)

Hi All,

Would it be possible for abbreviations to not be used? As this is a forum for old timers and newbies, there are many of us who don’t know what these abbreviations stand for. It doesn’t take more than a few seconds to type the full name, and it would help greatly in understanding what you’re talking about.

John,

Great advice, but I offer a slight modification……..?

Remove the chuck and check the arbor runout on the internal taper.? I’ve never been happy with the chuck mounting on those three studs, as it gets a new TIR every time you mount the chuck.?

If I remember correctly, my 7x14 (from Micromark) gets better than 0.0005 TIR.? I’ll try to re-check it later today.

Not sure how much run time you have on your lathe.

Check the front spindle bearing by placing a piece of board on the ways under the chuck (protection)?

Put a piece of bar under the chuck and with a dial indicator and the stylus sitting on the top of the chuck, see how much lift you are getting.

you maybe using the deep groove bearings as fitted standard to the lathe, maybe change to tapered roller bearings.

At least you then can eliminate on of the variables, also check the 4 bolts pulling down the headstock are tight.

Re: LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

I installed one of their kits, designed for the HF 7 X 12.
It took most of a day to put together, but was well worth it.
I bought my 7X to dedicate for a tool post grinder, but once I got the TP grinder on it,there was not enough room to use the tailstock.
Even with the longer bed,I have to use a #2 MT extension,to?get around the grinder, and give?support to the chamber?reamer I am working on.
Even the motor mount was an improved design.

Is the tool properly shaped for brass? Brass needs 0 top rake; if there's any top rake the tool will try to pull into the work.

LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

开云体育

Just a heads up. LMS has their 16 inch bed extension kit on sale for $99.95
?
This is only for their LMS 7x12 HiTorque lathe.
?
It includes a bed casting, a lead screw, a rack, a chip pan.
?
NOT a bolt on kit. It requires you to drill and tap 10 holes in the new bed casting.

I'm going to look at it on Thursay, if its as good as he says ill buy it, he wants $400. He's had it four years and used it twice. He has larger lathe and thought he was use the 8x12 more, but said he's tired of it setting around. He also has a HF mill for $300, I don't have the money for it right now, but will check with him again when I do to see if he still has it.

while still being a 'bench top' machine.. its got some nice weight/beef behind it..

no variable speed m otor though.. (if that matters to you like the 7x)..

Im a noob machinist though.. (for a bit of background).. either way I realy enjoy mine...

I've been looking for a mini lathe for a while. I put a wanted add on a local online site. I had a guy say he has the lathe in the subject line. Said he bought it about 8 years ago and hasn't used it much. I haven't looked at it yet, but would like some idea of price.

Any suggestions as to price are appreciated.

Gears and Gearbox

开云体育

Hope somebody can give me some info. I believe the change gears on the 7x lathes are 1.0 module. Can somebody please tell me the bore and keyways for the gears. By the way, what is the smallest gear provided for the change gears, 20?
?
Secondly, I know that there was a semi-quick-change gearbox designed and built by one of the people who participated on these 7x groups. Can somebody please tell me on which group I can find the construction article or provide a reference to the builders web site where I can find the article.
