Re: LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

It is the size of the motor compartment.? The 14 inch kit has room for a 350 watt? conventional motor, while the 16 inch kit is sized for the more compact stepper motor used in the Hi Torque lathes.? In addition, the bolt hole spacing for the headstock appears different. Interestingly, the longer bed weighs 2 pounds LESS than the 14 inch bed!? ?Probably because of the smaller motor compartment.

I believe it has something to do with the 16 inch bed being designed for use with a BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motor which drives the spindle directly via a belt. The only SIEG lathes that I know of that have this arrangement are the Micromark 7x16 and the LMS Hi-Torque 7x12. The lathes that use the HI/LO gear arrangement are setup to drive the counter shaft with the HI/LO shift gear.

?

I'm sure it could probably be made to work with the HI/LO gear HS (Head Stock) but it might be more work that it is worth.

?

I seem to remember something about the motor mount being different also.

?

Chris at LMS might have other reasons as to why it won't work or at least why it is not recommended.

Why will the 16¡± bed extension not work with other 7X lathes? Are the ways of a different dimension than the HF & Grizzly?

Just a heads up. LMS has their 16 inch bed extension kit on sale for $99.95

This is only for their LMS 7x12 HiTorque lathe.

It includes a bed casting, a lead screw, a rack, a chip pan.

NOT a bolt on kit. It requires you to drill and tap 10 holes in the new bed casting.
